SMPTE Announces IBC2023 Sessions and Highlights

SMPTE®, the home of media professionals, technologists, and engineers, today announced its lineup of sessions and show highlights for IBC2023, Sept. 15-18 in Amsterdam. Show visitors will find SMPTE and other show owners — the leading international bodies behind IBC — in the IBC2023 Partnership Pavilion, located in the RAI Hall 8 Lobby, at the top of the escalator.

SMPTE Representatives and Speakers at IBC2023
SMPTE President Renard T. Jenkins, SMPTE Executive Director David Grindle, SMPTE Director of Standards Development Thomas Bause Mason, and SMPTE Director of Business Development and Outreach Michele Wright, Ph.D., will all be at IBC2023 on behalf of the Society and available for meetings.

2023 CSI Awards Judging Panel
Wright was selected to participate on the 2023 CSI Awards judging panel. The CSI Awards were established in 2003 and are among the most prestigious and competitive technology awards in the media and entertainment (M&E) industry. The winners of the CSI Awards will be revealed at a networking and drinks reception, taking place in Amsterdam on Sept. 15 at the Hotel Okura.

“The CSI Awards celebrate excellence and innovation in the industry,” said Goran Nastic, editor of CSI Magazine. “We seek out judges who are neutral so they can respect each individual entry. We are proud to welcome Michele Wright as our newest judge for the CSI Awards. We look forward to Michele joining us to celebrate with the winners in Amsterdam.”

Sunday, Sept. 17: 13:45-14:30 — Changemaker Programme
Tech for Good: Digital Ethics and Responsible AI
Jenkins will be the moderator for a session that asks how, as AI takes center stage in the media and entertainment world, the industry can ensure unbiased usage and ethical adoption. This power panel, with guests proposed by #GALSNGEAR, Women in Streaming Media, and Women in Immersive Technologies, will look at the opportunities and limitations of AI and discuss solutions to potential flaws.

SMPTE Partner Programme Sessions at IBC2023
As an IBC2023 Partner, SMPTE will present two sessions within the IBC2023 Partner Programme. Free to attend, these sessions feature seminars from industry leaders on key topics driving change in media technology, workflows, and business models.

Sunday, Sept. 17: 10-10:45 in E102
Architecting Multi-cloud and On-Prem Workflows’ Solutions for Global Production Needs
This session will focus on enabling workflows in the multi-cloud environment, where hyperscale systems tend to transcend individual cloud providers’ abilities, while content contributions come in from decentralized content and workflow providers. The panel will include major cloud platform providers and end users and initiate a discussion about shifting towards application of SMPTE ST 2110 and related technologies into cloud environment, problems, and solutions.

Monday, Sept. 18: 10-10:45 in E102
AI in Live Broadcast and How SMPTE Is Utilizing the Tool Created by EBU to Make Education More Accessible
EBU’s EuroVOX tool currently supports at least 65 different languages and dialects for transcription and almost 20,000 different language pairs for translation, and SMPTE is now implementing the tool to translate technical documents and virtual classes for global access. Leaders of both organizations will discuss how they plan to further their collaboration to enable global equity in engineering education — and engage attendees in a live Q&A exploring what other applications may be useful to the global audience.

SMPTE News and Events
On the show floor and in weeks and months to come, SMPTE will be hosting events and launching new initiatives that make media technology more accessible — and the community connected to it more inclusive.

“While we work on a daily basis to build and support the global community that is SMPTE, it will be exciting to connect with the Society’s growing membership in person in Amsterdam,” said Wright, who will be attending her first IBC show. “We’re proud to be an IBC Partner, and I’m confident that with its focus on innovation, empowerment, and energizing the industry, IBC2023 will be a great lead-up to our own technical conference in October.”

Saturday, Sept. 16: 16-18:00 — SMPTE/BT Social Hour
On Saturday, Sept. 16, BT Media and Broadcast is partnering with SMPTE to provide relaxed networking with complimentary refreshments on the IBC2023 show floor. From 16-18:00 on Stand 0.A17, attendees are welcome to join with friends and colleagues from the industry to catch up and make valuable new connections. Registration is online at

SMPTE Media Technology Summit (MTS) Preview
At IBC2023, SMPTE will preview the wide array of sessions planned for the SMPTE Media Technology Summit (MTS), Oct. 16-19 in Hollywood, California. Orchestrated by the 2023 SMPTE MTS co-chairs, SMPTE Education Director Iris Wu and SMPTE Membership Director Zandra Clarke, the event will feature sessions led by experts from across the industry and around the globe.

Some highlights will include a keynote speech on generative AI and machine learning by Hanno Basse, CTO at Digital Domain; a session led by Jenkins that showcases individuals whose work demonstrates inclusivity in action; a session moderated by Wright that engages experts on the subject of cross-disciplinary communication and how it can encourage an inclusive approach to storytelling; a presentation by technical session chair Dagmar Driesnack, solution manager at Rohde & Schwarz, on HDR in action; a presentation by Jesse Janosky showcasing work with Glendale Community College students on a system setup for this year’s Super Bowl; an HPA session on AI in localization chaired by T Shobhana, senior vice president and global head of marketing at Prime Focus Technologies; and a session chaired by SMPTE Vice President of Standards Sally Hattori on SMPTE’s move toward HTMP publishing of standards.

In addition to a rich slate of technical presentations, the conference will include an emerging technology showcase, a space dedicated to the color science of digital cinema, and the SMPTE Color Bar & Lounge. Registration is online at

SMPTE Standard Family Branding
SMPTE’s most recognizable products are its standards. Used extensively throughout the industry, they solve real problems, enabling organizations to collaborate. Throughout IBC2023, SMPTE will preview a new series of icons being developed to uniquely represent the Society’s standards. Each icon is connected as a mark of quality via the SMPTE color bars. Once incorporated into the SMPTE branding guide, they will be freely available to users across the industry as a simple, clear, and consistent way to refer to commonly used standards.
