TV-Bay has featured a number of stories from the University of Portsmouth course BSc Television and Broadcasting over the last 12 months, and the course is relatively unusual for operating an actually television channel in tandem with the curriculum, and for producing weekly live professional TV programmes. The course has recently produced a successful 24 hour broadcast and they have just installed a brand new TV studio in a very open area of the new Eldon building. As they get ready for a new academic year it’s time to meet some of the third year students who will be managing the Creative and Cultural Industries (CCI) TV channel over the next 8 months.

It wasn’t until I reached the age of 17 that I even considered a career in television. TV and Broadcasting offers the chance to gain a vast amount of practical experience in a variety of roles, but also managerial roles within TV. I’m keen to keep multi-skilling, and thankfully the industry standard equipment within Portsmouth, and expertise of the tutors and support technicians is a confidence inducing bonus. I have worked with Sky Sports and IMG Productions on several occasions within tennis and golf respectively, and this has inspired me to undertake the role of CCI Sports Manager. This is a brand new position and my duty is to build sports audiences and to utilise multicamera recording with the new Black Magic ATEM Television Studio. Exciting times!

As I enter my third year I am pleased to say that I am going to be the Programme Scheduling Manager for the CCI TV Channel. I studied Television and Film at my local college and I knew there and then that I had to find a University that did this at degree level. I was immediately drawn to Portsmouth and the Television and Broadcasting course. I’ve taken on this role because I’m really fascinated with what many would consider an ‘unsung’ element of TV, and it’s also part of my studies for my final year project - I am both nervous and very excited to be involved in this, and it will be my job to schedule all new and archive programmes on the channel using a trusty old pen, paper and Capital Networks - Audience TV. I’m very proud to be a part of a course-run channel that strives for professional standards, and I plan to enjoy every moment of my role over the next year, although I’m sure it’s going to be very difficult.

After spending 2 years studying Interactive Media at National Diploma level, it has been a nice turn of events to end up taking on one of the social network management roles. Social networking has become an integral part of TV, and the course has carefully reflected this within CCI TV over the last two years. In a very short space of time we have achieved 800 ‘likes’ via Facebook alone, and our posts regularly engages up to 12,000! My final year project will aim to see whether I can increase the channel audience through social networks such as Vine and Instagram, and ultimately produce something that engages both students and staff over 24 weeks. I also hope to get involved in much of the outside broadcast work this year using our new miniCaster. I think the latter piece of kit is going to be very popular!

It took me a long time to figure out I wanted to work in television. I owe the change in focus to a teacher with dreadlocks who was doing some temp work in my college. One video animation later and I was hooked! I then discovered script writing, and for my final year project I will be overseeing all live TV scripts. My final year project focus is making sure all scripts hit the deadlines, are produced to the highest standards, and I want to make sure we do not to fall into producing scripts that sound too similar each week. I will also be researching script writing software to evaluate and make recommendations, wish me luck!
