TSL Products Shifts R and D Focus Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic Posted: 04/05/2020
TSL Products Shifts R and amp;D Focus Amidst the COVID-19 Pandemic

As many broadcast stations are operating in a work-from-home environment amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, TSL Products has altered its R&D roadmap for the short term, in response to specific customer requirements and to meet the current needs of the industry.

Since TSL’s acquisition of DNF Controls in April 2019, the U.S. team based out of Northridge, CA, has remained focused on the developing and supporting the Flex Control Network and range of Universal Control Panels. “We have many customers across the United States who use our Flex Control Network for critical production and playout in news-based Hub and Spoke systems that connect network stations. Due to heightened demands in remote broadcasts, we recently altered our R&D to service our Flex customers and assist them in response to the pandemic,” says Fred Scott, regional sales manager U.S. at TSL and former sales director for DNF Controls. “With many customers working remotely, rather than in-studio, we added a feature called ‘Web Keys’ that, when connected to any DNF powered Universal Switch Panel within the Flex network, allows users to control devices situated in major hub and spoke installations across the U.S. from home.”

NEP Group Uses TSL Products MPA1-MIX MADI-V Audio Monitoring Units in New OB Trucks Posted: 07/04/2020
NEP Group Uses TSL Products and rsquo; MPA1-MIX MADI-V Audio Monitoring Units in New OB Trucks

NEP Group is the leading worldwide outsourced technical production partner to premier content producers of live sports and entertainment throughout the world. As a long-standing customer of TSL Products, NEP Group has relied on the company’s MPA1 units as their audio monitoring solution of choice for live broadcasts. When TSL introduced its new MPA1 V Series audio monitor, designed to directly address the needs of those in live production, NEP was the first to realise the benefits and place its order. NEP Group integrates TSL’s MPA1-MIX MADI-V audio monitor as a cost-effective solution to improve operator workflow within its fleet of OB trucks.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance the workflow of operators within our OB trucks,” says Michael Naugle, design engineer for NEP’s U.S. Broadcast Services team. “The newly designed TSL MPA1-MIX MADI-V units feature an extremely intuitive layout. The left to right ascending order of the knobs is very user-friendly as the operator can easily find the channel they need, without having to look directly at the panel. The ‘V’ pattern also has a nice aesthetic look to it.”

Since integrating the new TSL MPA1-MIX MADI-V units, Naugle has received positive feedback from the operators. “Operator feedback has been great – they enjoy the look of the new V Series, as well as the ease of use that comes with having the updated control layout. Also, the sound quality is amazing, which we have come to expect from all TSL solutions.”

NEP Group currently has the MPA1-MIX MADI-V units installed in two of its OB trucks and Naugle plans to continue relying on the units for projects going forward. “In addition to the two trucks that currently have the updated TSL MPA1 V units, we are building several other trucks in the U.S. this year that will also be equipped with the MPA1-MIX MADI-V. Also, in our newer IP trucks, we have been installing the TSL PAM2-IP units, which are extremely useful tools when working with audio in an IP infrastructure.”

TSL Products Continues to Develop Audio Monitoring Solutions That Align With Broadcasters Evolving Needs

TSL Products a leading designer and manufacturer of broadcast workflow solutions, continues to evolve its solutions to meet the changing needs of its customers and the transition towards IP workflows. To keep up with the demands of ever-changing broadcast requirements, TSL has updated its audio monitoring offerings, including its SAM-Q platform, PAM-IP and MPA1 lines.

The SAM-Q platform has been designed to provide multiple operational modes and behaviours, allowing customers to select their preferred way of working based on their application, skillset or personal preference. The SAM-Q platform allows newly developed operational modes to be added at any time, including the brand-new audio phase metering mode and loudness monitoring modes. SAM-Q’s new loudness capabilities provides three new loudness modes to the user whilst also providing short-term, momentary and integrated loudness values over an Ethernet network. With up to eight independent loudness probes and the ability to calculate loudness values from a variety of program configurations from mono through to 9.1+4, the SAM-Q-SDI provides both operational simplicity and deep audio analysis simultaneously.

Additionally, TSL is releasing the first of two administrative tools to the SAM-Q range. SAM-Q-EDIT allows SAM-Q-SDI owners to create, modify and edit their SAM-Q-SDI configurations using a PC. SAM-Q’s agile approach to audio monitoring, with licensed capabilities, remote monitoring and customer configurable behaviours deliver solid operational and economical efficiencies throughout a truck or facility.

TSL Products Expanded Broadcast Control Systems Meet Demands of Sports Production Environments Posted: 12/12/2019
TSL Products and rsquo; Expanded Broadcast Control Systems Meet Demands of Sports Production Environments

TSL Products, a leading designer and manufacturer of broadcast workflow solutions, continues to see expanded uptake of its broadcast control system offerings to meet the specific needs of sports broadcasters who require solutions that keep up in fast-paced, high-stress environments. Using TSL’s powerful control tools to support remote production in particular, local production teams can maximise their resources and take control of devices located anywhere, allowing them to save valuable time and investment when it matters most.

“The conversation about broadcast sports solutions and applications today is heavily focused on remote production, and all the major events and broadcasters are seeking solutions that are quick and simple to implement,” says Mark Davies, Director of Products and Technology at TSL Products. “Our control offerings allow customers to quickly set up systems and take control of their configurations — making TSL’s control platforms incredible versatile for live productions. At TSL Products, we strive to provide our customers with reliable gear that simplifies and expedites remote command and control over production capabilities. This is especially important for sports productions, where there’s an audience of millions, and no margin for error.”

TSL’s device controllers can be used to pass camera tally signals and trigger graphics between multiple production trucks and venues. Tallies can tell the hands-on operator that the camera is ‘live’ and selected on a production switcher for use on-air. Delegating who has control over what camera tallies and what resources at a remote site can be configured ahead of the game, or even while live on air—saving precious time in these high-speed environments. Additionally, the company’s kit is perfect for production fly-packs deployed to remote game sites communicating with a local system at the home base facility to route tallies from production studio to the event location.

TSL inherited a powerful ingest management solution as part of its acquisition of DNF Controls in April 2019. These solutions have been designed with a sports broadcaster’s high-volume recording facility in mind, where sometimes overwhelming amounts of incoming material must be secured. Specifically, the company’s GTP-32 Control Processor offers a simple, cost-effective, and easily accessible solution, which can be configured for multiple simultaneous ingest channels, with units located remotely. The GTP-32 delivers conditional operator control and monitoring over a wide range of broadcast production equipment across cities, states and countries.

Esports Stadium Arlington Integrates TSL Products Advanced Control System Into Workflow for Seamless Interoperability Posted: 23/10/2019
Esports Stadium Arlington Integrates TSL Products and rsquo; Advanced Control System Into Workflow for Seamless Interoperability

Esports Stadium Arlington in Texas needed to establish a broadcast workflow suitable for its modern, 100,000-square-foot event space. The stadium’s integrator suggested adding TSL Products’ advanced control system into the facility’s workflow to achieve a seamless, universal broadcast control surface.

“We needed an advanced and user-friendly system to transition between live hosts and various player cameras to help organize who should be live at each point of the event,” says Corey Dunn, VP of Broadcast for the stadium. “Operating with TSL’s advanced control system benefits both the production crew and on-camera talent. From the hosts at the desk transitioning from camera-to-camera to our production crew knowing who is live and when – the integration of TSL into our workflow doesn’t just impact camera operators, but the entire production.”

The stadium uses TSL Products’ advanced control to significantly improve its workflow, especially with the multitude of camera angles required in esports productions. In addition to the sheer volume of inputs and potential places that the technical director needs to locate and select for preview/program, the fast-paced and ever-changing “action movie” nature of the environment also lends itself to a dedicated advanced control system. Additionally, many Esports workflows require interfacing a bevy of both traditional broadcast as well as IT and COTS equipment to run properly. Using Virtual Panel Interfaces, the stadium can create an easily configurable process to customize these operations with intuitive, drag-and-drop controls.

“TSL helped solve our biggest challenge: integrating the many different types of equipment and technology we have at the facility,” said Dunn. “The system provided us with the opportunity to put on smooth shows on a consistent basis. Our integrator helped us make the best possible selection for the facility, and TSL continues to deliver.”

TSL’s intuitive control interface enables users to establish seamless broadcast communication on a single, unified layer. The system was initially built as a tally system, and therefore had to be independent, universal, configurable and infinitely scalable. With over 2,000 installations worldwide, TSL can now manage complex control tasks, such as router control, studio failover and delegation. With TSL, customers can achieve interoperability between equipment routed through analog, IP or hybrid networks, regardless of differing manufacturers and format specifications. TSL’s Tallyman control system is a globally trusted and road-tested broadcast production control solution that bridges the gap between IP framework components and any broadcast or live presentation technical equipment.
