Sony creates the ideal future for education and the workplace at ISE 2020

Sony Professional Solutions Europe demonstrates a bold vision to create the ideal future for education and work at ISE 2020, as it reveals its latest AV and IT solutions on stand 1-N20. These include a new beamforming microphone MAS-A100 for lectures and presentations, an upgrade to the transformative workplace management solution with TEOS 2.2, and significant expansions to its laser projector line up.

Visitors to the stand can meet Sony experts to discuss how digital technologies are reshaping our organisations and the importance of adaptability, flexibility and personalisation today, while offering first-hand insight into the latest Sony products and solutions through interactive demonstrations. Attendees will also experience an impressive 4K x 2K Crystal LED display system with breath-taking visuals and new interactive content.

“Technology is reshaping every aspect of our modern lives. At Sony we’re dedicated to helping our customers harness the full potential of modern technologies to create their ideal future, whether that's in education, at work or elsewhere. This is why we are proud to showcase our latest line up of advanced products and solutions here at ISE 2020," explains Damien Weissenburger, Head of Corporate and Education Solutions at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. "From our ground-breaking new beamforming microphone to impressive additions for our comprehensive workplace management solution TEOS. We are introducing innovations that build on decades of experience and are the result of Sony creating solutions together with our customers and industry partners."

The future of education

Sony is expanding its range of advanced solutions for delivering, recording and streaming engaging presentations and video content in education environments. All solutions will be combined in the live demo setting to showcase the advanced teaching and learning experience.

MAS-A100 - is a new IP-based ceiling beamforming microphone enabling flexible and creative “hands-free” lectures and presentations. It offers advanced clear audio for speech reinforcement and recording with a unique combination of beamforming technology and its unique Intelligent Feedback Reducer function. The microphone can also be easily integrated into existing AV setups with the Dante®*1 digital audio-over-IP networking standard.

Edge Analytics Appliance (REA-C1000) - enables users to create impactful video content with minimal resources. The Artificial Intelligence-powered solution features automatic handwriting extraction from black and white boards, a Chroma key-less CG Overlay feature to extract the presenter and overlay them onto any background without the need for a dedicated backscreen or specialist training. The PTZ Auto Tracking also keeps presenters in frame throughout their presentation by accurately and smoothly tracking a presenter.

UbiCast - an easy-to-use automated solution that allows corporate and education organisations to create and share dynamic, searchable, feature-rich video content. UbiCast will also showcase a new generation of video recorders to support the latest SRG cameras. Sony’s audio Auto Gain Control and Noise Reduction plugins will be included in these video recorders and the video platform to deliver an enhanced audio experience to online viewers.

The future of work

Sony TEOS continues to play a critical role in transforming workspaces to increase productivity, efficiency and employee engagement in over 200 organisations across 28 countries to date, including Capgemini and Siemens. The latest updates to the TEOS line-up provide users with the most comprehensive set of tools to work more collaboratively and flexibly. TEOS 2.2 uses the advances in IoT sensor technology to boost integration and unlock efficiencies with 20 new functionalities and features. These include tailored Smart Automation options, a new customisable Meeting Display interface and an intuitive Outlook integration for room booking, reception sign-in and content sharing.

4 new TEB-XP Professional Tablets - available in a range of sizes from 7” - 22” for meeting rooms, classrooms and reception areas

4K Android Player - for mirroring signage and meeting room display content via Connect for TEOS.

Two new smart sensors - a desk sensor to measure occupancy and a meeting room sensor to measure both occupancy and CO2 levels

Visitors to the stand can also see demonstrations of 7 models in the range of Sony BRAVIA Professional Displays, which combine exceptional picture quality and design with advanced professional features to meet the AV needs of any organisation.

The future of laser projection

From entry-level through to premium projectors, Sony offers a solution for any space and budget, whether in classrooms and conference venues or museums and churches. All new laser projectors will also support the Intelligent Setting feature to simplify installation, with pre-sets that adjust brightness, cooling system, colour and other projector settings for optimal performance based on the environment the projectors are used in.

VPL-FHZ131L - is the newest and brightest premium WUXGA projector from Sony, boasting outputs of 13,000lm. With 100% S-RGB colour space reproduction and high contrast of ∞:1, they deliver incredibly bright, engaging and immersive images. Its wide lens shift capability and an optional short-throw lens VPLL-Z4107 can increase the flexibility of installation in the venues where a throw distance is limited.

Sony also plans to launch the following projectors this spring, which will not be showcased at ISE.

VPL-FHZ101L and VPL-FHZ91L – are also the premium WUXGA projectors, boasting outputs of 10,000lm and 9,000lm respectively.

VPL-PHZ12 - is the new Sony midrange 5,000lm WUXGA laser projector using a 0.76-inch LCD panel with its incorporated optical compensator. The model delivers bright, vibrant images with high contrast of ∞:1 and true-to-life colour reproduction.

VPL-CWZ10 - the new, industry’s most compact*2 5,000lm WXGA laser projector on the market. The projector is approximately 40% smaller and 35% lighter when compared with conventional model (VPL-PWZ10). Affordable cost and low maintenance make it a sensible, entry-level laser-based replacement for lamp models.

For those seeking multiple projectors for different purposes across a single location, the Sony line-up offers high quality reproductions from both still image data and video playback, as well as unification in colour tone, controllability, design, and integration, regardless of use case or room size.

The future of broadcasting solutions

An area of the Sony stand will be dedicated to its portfolio of Media Solutions designed to meet the needs for simple and cost-effective content creation in education and corporate organization and enable them to realise their vision. Stand demonstrations will include:

Virtual Production - an on-demand cloud production service that provides a complete production toolset for multi-platform content creation and delivery.

Professional Camcorders - bringing outstanding image quality, versatility and leading-edge technology to every level of content creation, Sony will be showcasing a range of camcorders with 4K and HDR capability.

Professional Audio – high sound quality solutions from Sony, including the DWX Series digital wireless microphone with Dante®*1 support as well as compact and lightweight UWP-D series, built on its 60 years of experience in redefining the creative and technical possibilities for live recording or recorded sound.

New Camera Remote Software Development Kit – On show for the first time, the new SDK for select α™ (Alpha™), Sony’s Interchangeable Lens Digital Cameras, allows developers and integrators to create bespoke applications such as to remotely control cameras for tailored usage requirements.

Sony will be exhibiting at stand 1-N20 at RAI Amsterdam from 11th - 14th February.

*1: Dante® is trademark of Audinate Pty Ltd.

*2: Among 3LCD laser light source projectors with a brightness of 5,000lm. As of February 11, 2020, based on Sony survey result.

Shotoku USA to Exhibit Manual Camera Support Solutions at NAB 2020 Posted: 27/02/2020
Shotoku USA to Exhibit Manual Camera Support Solutions at NAB 2020

Shotoku USA, Shotoku Broadcast Systems’ North American operation, will highlight a complement of manual support solutions at NAB 2020 in Booth C 9108 targeting a wide-range of applications. The international leader in the manufacture and marketing of camera support products will display a line-up that includes an addition to the recently launched SX200/260 ENG/EFP systems; the affordable, entry-level SD & SE tripod series, and the universally successful TP500/SX300 studio pedestal/head combination.

SX200 and SX260 ENG/EFP systems

Raising the bar on movement quality and shot framing control, the recently launched Shotoku SX200 and SX260 pan and tilt heads incorporate a brand-new design featuring Shotoku’s “Truebalance” for perfect counterbalance that is also easy to adjust throughout the range and has an intuitive display to indicate the current setting. The drag system uses Shotoku’s well known Viscam design but adds a new actuation system that combines the convenience and speed of selection of a stepped system, with the fine tuning and on-shot adjustment of a continuously variable design. The SX200 has a max payload of 44Lbs (20Kg) and the SX260 55Lbs (25Kg). The systems come standard with 2 stage ENG Carbon Fibre legs and is one of the lightest on the market at these payloads.

NEW for NAB 2020 - With these SX200/SX260 heads crossing over to the EFP application, the new TTH1002C 100mm carbon fibre EFP tripod has been added to provide an extremely rigid solution, useful when using longer lenses for sports and documentary production.

PSSI Global Services engineers massive at-home transmission for Rolex 24 Posted: 27/02/2020
PSSI Global Services engineers massive at-home transmission for Rolex 24

For NASCAR’s Rolex 24, PSSI Global Services, the industry leader in live event management, transmission and connectivity solutions, successfully engineered an at-home transmission that included delivery of 32 video paths and 150 audio paths via both satellite and AT&T Global Video Services fiber.

“This was a remarkably complex transmission for what is undoubtedly the biggest at-home transmission in the country,” said PSSI’s Director of Broadcast Sports Rick Ball. “Once again, we have continued to change the game, proving just how much can be accomplished with the right mix of expertise, experience and technology.”

Using two and a half transponders and only one amplifier, the company transmitted three different modulation schemes at the same time. The primary multiplex utilized DVB-S2X/32APSK, while the secondary program multiplex was modulated using DVB-S2X/16APSK, each at 125 Mbps. The third multiplex was 40 Mbps using DVB-S2/8PSK modulation. All together the three multiplexes, totaling 290 Mbps, occupied only 90 MHz of satellite bandwidth.

PSSI International Teleport (PIT) provided extensive hub services between the racetrack in Daytona Beach, Florida, and NASCAR headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to transmission of the video and audio, PSSI Global Services was also responsible for providing comms and internet for production.

Mediaproxy to demonstrate full LogServer functionality at CABSAT 2020 Posted: 27/02/2020
Mediaproxy to demonstrate full LogServer functionality at CABSAT 2020

Mediaproxy, the leading provider of software-based IP broadcast solutions, will show the latest upgrades to its LogServer IP logging, monitoring and analysis system on booth A4-10 during CABSAT 2020 from 31 March to 2 April at the Dubai World Trade Centre.

CABSAT is the leading broadcast, satellite and content exhibition for the Middle East, Africa and South Asia markets. The show is a major draw for manufacturers of production, delivery and digital media technology. Now arranged to showcase three key broadcast sectors, CABSAT covers Content Creation, Content Production and Post-Production and Content Distribution and Delivery.

Mediaproxy produces technology that plays a major role in ensuring material leaving playout systems meets technical compliance standards. Platforms such as LogServer are also able to analyze and correct any problems or faults in the distribution chain. To perform these tasks more quickly and efficiently, Mediaproxy recently added exception-based monitoring to LogServer's feature set. This uses IP penalty boxes that allow broadcasters and MSOs (multiple system operators) working at scale to deal with QC and compliance more efficiently.

Interactivity is also a major consideration for broadcasters and service providers, particularly because social media is how many people access video today. Outlets such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube have different, specific requirements for how material is prepared and Mediaproxy has incorporated dedicated tools for this into LogServer. These include features for cropping the image and altering the aspect ratio to make it better suited to mobile devices, in addition to the capability for inserting ad bumpers.

Grass Valley and rsquo;s GV Alyve is the Clear Winner for Miss Germany Competition

Grass Valley’s cloud-based video production and distribution solution was central to AKK TV’s live streaming of the Miss Germany 2020 competition, held on February 15 at the Europa-Park Arena near Freiburg. GV Alyve, allowed the German OB company to leverage one-click distribution of the live HD event stream to Facebook and the dedicated Miss Germany YouTube channel.

Using GV Alyve, the AKK TV production team was able to quickly and easily create digital broadcasts from within a web browser, switching seamlessly between live streams to create the final feed. Integrating seamlessly with AKK TV’s existing Grass Valley workflow, GV Alyve also allows graphics to be added to the live stream and provides a straightforward interface for managing social interactions across multiple platforms. The system was supplied by Grass Valley’s German reseller, LOGIC media solutions.

John Sturm, Managing Director of AKK TV commented: “We looked at a number of different solutions on the market and GV Alyve exceeded our expectations both on functionality and ease of use. We’ve worked with the Grass Valley and LOGIC teams in the past and they really understand our requirements. The added capability GV Alyve brings to our workflow allows us to grow the live streaming area of our business without adding complexity to our OB set-up.”

Pete Semerak, Grass Valley’s vice president, production, added: “We’re very pleased to see a successful first deployment for GV Alyve with AKK TV. In today’s live productions environment fast and smart ways of working are central to our customers’ needs. GV Alyve gives broadcasters and production companies a simple way to integrate online and social delivery, allowing production staff to distribute media to viewers with a single click and ultimately satisfying consumer demand for always-on content.”

The international manufacturer of high-quality, easy-to-use, robust and reliable robotic and manual camera support systems will demonstrate advancements that incorporate an IP interface into its flagship SmartPed robotic pedestal; a self-contained and easy to connect pan/tilt head; numerous enhancements incorporated into the Company’s TR-XT control system and will also highlight its height drive and pan/tilt head ideal for legislative applications.

SmartPed Fully Robotic Pedestal – Absolutely Brilliant Navigation

SmartPed with Absolute Navigation is perfect for those applications where referencing the fully robotic pedestal is inconvenient or the design of the studio leaves no scope for a floor tile reference position. SmartPed now comes with two optional additions depending on the environment – AN-I is an IP interface within SmartPed enabling it to interface to existing external optical tracking systems such as Mosys StarTracker or Stype RedSpy using the absolute tracking information to reference and adjust the pedestals own internal navigation systems. AN-S provides a full integrated solution, including the optical tracking system for situations where customers do not already have installed optical tracking.

b<>com and Viaccess-Orca Make a Clear Round at the Cartesian Watermark Evaluation

Viaccess-Orca (VO), a global leader providing OTT and TV platforms, content protection, and advanced data solutions, announced today that its Dynamic Watermarking solution developed in collaboration with b<>com, a European private research institute, has undergone a stringent assessment carried out by Cartesian, an independent consultancy company for the communications and digital media industries. Co-developed by VO and b<>com, the Stream Guardian technology provides algorithms for VO's Dynamic Watermarking. According to specifications set by the Hollywood movie industry, Cartesian tested the robustness of the solution through its Farncombe Security Audit® Watermark. During the audit, the technology passed all the robustness tests, which check the watermark's ability to withstand attempts to obfuscate it or prevent it from being recovered. Stream Guardian passed the assessment thanks to its live-optimized analysis algorithm.

Bolero Sets the Bar for Wireless Intercom Usability and Comfort for California-Based DP Craig Kief Posted: 26/02/2020
Bolero Sets the Bar for Wireless Intercom Usability and Comfort for California-Based DP Craig Kief

Craig Kief, a Los Angeles-based director of photography, is using Riedel's Bolero Standalone wireless intercom for crew communications on his TV shows and commercials. The system allows him to keep all of his camera operators, focus pullers, and department heads in close communication so everyone can focus on the same goals in the middle of a busy and noisy set. With its long list of advanced features and capabilities, Bolero now enables clear communications for every production, whether it's shot on studio sets or at remote locations.

Craig's previous comms solution comprised walkie-talkies and a legacy wireless system that operated in the crowded 2.4 GHz range, delivering less-than-ideal audio quality and suffering from interference, short range, and poor battery life. Bolero has changed all of that, first by eliminating walkie-talkies completely, and next by allowing a more natural way of speaking: giving multiple users full duplex communications instead of forcing them to wait for a walkie channel to be clear before speaking.

AMS Neve Helps Parasite Deliver Exceptional Sound Quality Posted: 26/02/2020
AMS Neve Helps Parasite Deliver Exceptional Sound Quality

South Korean film facility Live Tone Studios is celebrating the success of Parasite, the comedy satire directed by Bong Joon-ho that made Academy Awards® history in February by becoming the first foreign language film to win an Oscar® for Best Picture.

Audio post production for this remarkable movie, which also picked up three other Oscars® for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film, was carried out at the facility using one of its two large format AMS Neve DFC 3D film consoles. A 48-channel Neve Genesys console also played its part as this was used to record and monitor Additional Dialogue Replacement (ADR).

Ralph Tae-Young Choi is CEO, Sound Supervisor and Re-recording mixer at Live Tone Studios, a facility he helped establish in 1997, says: “The sound of Parasite was so detailed and emotional that it needed the console automation to operate very efficiently and simply. This is where the Neve DFC 3D really came into its own. I mix all of my movie sound with an AMS Neve DFC 3D console because it has a much more powerful audio engine and better audio quality than other consoles or DAWs. For a mixer to be intuitive and efficient, you need the console to be reliable and the AMS Neve DFC 3D excels at that.”

Nevion reports record year as shift to IP in broadcasting intensifies Posted: 26/02/2020
Nevion reports record year as shift to IP in broadcasting intensifies

Nevion, award-winning provider of virtualized media production solutions, has announced that 2019 was a record year for the company with sales orders up 52% compared to the previous year.

In addition to this, software and services now represent almost half (48%) of Nevion’s sales. This is a significant increase from 2014 when software and services represented just 16% of the company’s sales – underlining the move from dedicated hardware to software-defined IP solutions. This shift is further illustrated by the fact that two-thirds of the hardware being sold by Nevion is now IP equipment.

In 2019, Nevion provided workflow-transforming solutions, products and services to over 150 customers in around 50 countries. One of the ground-breaking projects delivered was for the organization behind the League of Legends (LoL) esports tournament, Riot Games who used Nevion’s software-defined media node Virtuoso with JPEG XS for part of its remote production of the LoL World Championship Final.

One other highlight of 2019 for Nevion was signing a strategic partnership with Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc. (“Sony”), in the area of IP-based solutions for broadcasters and other industries. As part of the deal, Sony acquired a minority stake in the company through a share purchase agreement making it a leading investor in Nevion.

As a leader in its field, Nevion also spearheaded the VIRTUOSA consortium which received a €2 million grant from the European Commission in 2019 to explore 5G and virtualization remote production.
