No Static AV Delivers Ultra HD Workflow for Annual Baby2baby Fundraising Gala

Blackmagic Design today announced that LA based event production company No Static AV (NSAV) used an Ultra HD live production workflow featuring URSA Broadcast cameras and ATEM switchers to deliver in house AV and IMAG for the annual Baby2Baby fundraising gala, which raises millions of dollars for the nonprofit and the children living in poverty that it serves.

Held at the 3Labs event space in Culver City, CA, the Baby2Baby gala brings together celebrities, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and the evening hosts the top chefs in Los Angeles, an exclusive auction and inspiring program, all while honoring this year’s Giving Tree Award winner, Chrissy Teigen. Past honorees include Amy Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Alba.

With no shortage of AV deliverables, NSAV used its mobile production unit featuring a custom made flypack designed specifically with the Baby2Baby gala in mind. The unit relied on several Blackmagic Design products, including four URSA Broadcasts complete with URSA Studio Viewfinders, four Camera Fiber Converters and four Studio Fiber Converters for fiber connectivity between the cameras and switcher, an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel for live switching, and a Smart Videohub 20x20 router to distribute content throughout the venue. NSAV also used an ATEM Camera Control Panel for remote camera control and Teranex AV standards converter for on the fly conversions.

NSAV praised the image quality from the URSA Broadcasts and the ease of use of the live production gear. The URSA Broadcasts were used for IMAG and the content was also recorded in camera in 4K and in 1080 at the mobile production unit. Camera Fiber Converters and Studio Fiber Converters were necessary for fiber communication between the cameras and the switcher, giving the team real time control of all camera aspects, and the ATEM Camera Control Panel allowed NSAV to properly adjust color correction, shading and shutter speed during rehearsals and the live show.

NSAV also provided two 16x9 foot projection screens with 18K lumen laser projectors, two 70 inch LED displays, two 80 inch LED displays, four 90 inch LED displays, and another 18k laser projector shot onto a large wall in the lounge area. This year’s musical act, Paula Abdul, also brought in her own 10 mil video wall, which was used to display auction footage, logos, and to run the artist’s own content as a backdrop to the stage.

“We needed to be able to distribute any content to any screen at any time,” said Adam Beck-Slaten, vice president of production at NSAV. “All of the screens were able to receive content from IMAG, PowerPoint, PlaybackPro, or two internet streams that were tracking donations. We also needed to distribute a script to the teleprompter, while two downstage confidence monitors and an 80 inch display at front of house were showing video from the program, auction and speeches for the presenters to follow along.

The Smart Videohub 20x20 allowed NSAV to expand on the inputs and outputs of the ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K. With this particular event requiring so many inputs and discreet outputs, the team was able to hot key different areas of the event using the router to control nine inputs and 18 outputs seamlessly throughout the show.

“Using Blackmagic Design products meant we were able to make a speedy transition to 4K in a cost effective way, while keeping the level of quality our clients expect,” said Beck-Slaten. “Since we often encounter so many different requests, the Blackmagic Design line allows us to build out what we need to adapt quickly and expeditiously when last minute requests and changes are thrown our way. Blackmagic lets us build what we want and need piece by piece.”

Shotoku USA, Shotoku Broadcast Systems’ North American operation, will highlight a complement of manual support solutions at NAB 2020 in Booth C 9108 targeting a wide-range of applications. The international leader in the manufacture and marketing of camera support products will display a line-up that includes an addition to the recently launched SX200/260 ENG/EFP systems; the affordable, entry-level SD & SE tripod series, and the universally successful TP500/SX300 studio pedestal/head combination.

SX200 and SX260 ENG/EFP systems

Raising the bar on movement quality and shot framing control, the recently launched Shotoku SX200 and SX260 pan and tilt heads incorporate a brand-new design featuring Shotoku’s “Truebalance” for perfect counterbalance that is also easy to adjust throughout the range and has an intuitive display to indicate the current setting. The drag system uses Shotoku’s well known Viscam design but adds a new actuation system that combines the convenience and speed of selection of a stepped system, with the fine tuning and on-shot adjustment of a continuously variable design. The SX200 has a max payload of 44Lbs (20Kg) and the SX260 55Lbs (25Kg). The systems come standard with 2 stage ENG Carbon Fibre legs and is one of the lightest on the market at these payloads.

NEW for NAB 2020 - With these SX200/SX260 heads crossing over to the EFP application, the new TTH1002C 100mm carbon fibre EFP tripod has been added to provide an extremely rigid solution, useful when using longer lenses for sports and documentary production.

PSSI Global Services engineers massive at-home transmission for Rolex 24

For NASCAR’s Rolex 24, PSSI Global Services, the industry leader in live event management, transmission and connectivity solutions, successfully engineered an at-home transmission that included delivery of 32 video paths and 150 audio paths via both satellite and AT&T Global Video Services fiber.

“This was a remarkably complex transmission for what is undoubtedly the biggest at-home transmission in the country,” said PSSI’s Director of Broadcast Sports Rick Ball. “Once again, we have continued to change the game, proving just how much can be accomplished with the right mix of expertise, experience and technology.”

Using two and a half transponders and only one amplifier, the company transmitted three different modulation schemes at the same time. The primary multiplex utilized DVB-S2X/32APSK, while the secondary program multiplex was modulated using DVB-S2X/16APSK, each at 125 Mbps. The third multiplex was 40 Mbps using DVB-S2/8PSK modulation. All together the three multiplexes, totaling 290 Mbps, occupied only 90 MHz of satellite bandwidth.

PSSI International Teleport (PIT) provided extensive hub services between the racetrack in Daytona Beach, Florida, and NASCAR headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.

In addition to transmission of the video and audio, PSSI Global Services was also responsible for providing comms and internet for production.

Grass Valley’s cloud-based video production and distribution solution was central to AKK TV’s live streaming of the Miss Germany 2020 competition, held on February 15 at the Europa-Park Arena near Freiburg. GV Alyve, allowed the German OB company to leverage one-click distribution of the live HD event stream to Facebook and the dedicated Miss Germany YouTube channel.

Using GV Alyve, the AKK TV production team was able to quickly and easily create digital broadcasts from within a web browser, switching seamlessly between live streams to create the final feed. Integrating seamlessly with AKK TV’s existing Grass Valley workflow, GV Alyve also allows graphics to be added to the live stream and provides a straightforward interface for managing social interactions across multiple platforms. The system was supplied by Grass Valley’s German reseller, LOGIC media solutions.

SmartPed with Absolute Navigation is perfect for those applications where referencing the fully robotic pedestal is inconvenient or the design of the studio leaves no scope for a floor tile reference position. SmartPed now comes with two optional additions depending on the environment – AN-I is an IP interface within SmartPed enabling it to interface to existing external optical tracking systems such as Mosys StarTracker or Stype RedSpy using the absolute tracking information to reference and adjust the pedestals own internal navigation systems. AN-S provides a full integrated solution, including the optical tracking system for situations where customers do not already have installed optical tracking.

Bolero Sets the Bar for Wireless Intercom Usability and Comfort for California-Based DP Craig Kief

Craig Kief, a Los Angeles-based director of photography, is using Riedel's Bolero Standalone wireless intercom for crew communications on his TV shows and commercials. The system allows him to keep all of his camera operators, focus pullers, and department heads in close communication so everyone can focus on the same goals in the middle of a busy and noisy set. With its long list of advanced features and capabilities, Bolero now enables clear communications for every production, whether it's shot on studio sets or at remote locations.

Craig's previous comms solution comprised walkie-talkies and a legacy wireless system that operated in the crowded 2.4 GHz range, delivering less-than-ideal audio quality and suffering from interference, short range, and poor battery life. Bolero has changed all of that, first by eliminating walkie-talkies completely, and next by allowing a more natural way of speaking: giving multiple users full duplex communications instead of forcing them to wait for a walkie channel to be clear before speaking.

AMS Neve Helps Parasite Deliver Exceptional Sound Quality

South Korean film facility Live Tone Studios is celebrating the success of Parasite, the comedy satire directed by Bong Joon-ho that made Academy Awards® history in February by becoming the first foreign language film to win an Oscar® for Best Picture.

Audio post production for this remarkable movie, which also picked up three other Oscars® for Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Film, was carried out at the facility using one of its two large format AMS Neve DFC 3D film consoles. A 48-channel Neve Genesys console also played its part as this was used to record and monitor Additional Dialogue Replacement (ADR).

Ralph Tae-Young Choi is CEO, Sound Supervisor and Re-recording mixer at Live Tone Studios, a facility he helped establish in 1997, says: “The sound of Parasite was so detailed and emotional that it needed the console automation to operate very efficiently and simply. This is where the Neve DFC 3D really came into its own. I mix all of my movie sound with an AMS Neve DFC 3D console because it has a much more powerful audio engine and better audio quality than other consoles or DAWs. For a mixer to be intuitive and efficient, you need the console to be reliable and the AMS Neve DFC 3D excels at that.”

Nevion reports record year as shift to IP in broadcasting intensifies

Nevion, award-winning provider of virtualized media production solutions, has announced that 2019 was a record year for the company with sales orders up 52% compared to the previous year.

In addition to this, software and services now represent almost half (48%) of Nevion’s sales. This is a significant increase from 2014 when software and services represented just 16% of the company’s sales – underlining the move from dedicated hardware to software-defined IP solutions. This shift is further illustrated by the fact that two-thirds of the hardware being sold by Nevion is now IP equipment.

In 2019, Nevion provided workflow-transforming solutions, products and services to over 150 customers in around 50 countries. One of the ground-breaking projects delivered was for the organization behind the League of Legends (LoL) esports tournament, Riot Games who used Nevion’s software-defined media node Virtuoso with JPEG XS for part of its remote production of the LoL World Championship Final. 

One other highlight of 2019 for Nevion was signing a strategic partnership with Sony Imaging Products & Solutions Inc. (“Sony”), in the area of IP-based solutions for broadcasters and other industries. As part of the deal, Sony acquired a minority stake in the company through a share purchase agreement making it a leading investor in Nevion.

As a leader in its field, Nevion also spearheaded the VIRTUOSA consortium which received a €2 million grant from the European Commission in 2019 to explore 5G and virtualization remote production.
