Calrec: Phil Adler, A1 Mixer, A craft interview

“I haven't changed the way I produce a broadcast because of the internet. The quality of what I stream at home is as good, if not better, than what the local stations are transmitting. I make sure the mix sounds good at low volume and in stereo or mono, which is an old music mix technique. If it sounds good like that, it'll sound good anywhere.”

White Rope Music Picks The Perfect Studio Monitors From PMC Posted: 20/04/2020
White Rope Music Picks The Perfect Studio Monitors From PMC

Clarity and extra power, especially at lower frequencies, are the main reasons why White Rope Music chose to install a pair of PMC result6 compact nearfield monitors and a sub2 in its studio in West London.

White Rope Music is a music production company owned by songwriter Sacha Skarbek, a Grammy nominee and two times Ivor Novello Award winner who has written material for artists such as James Blunt and Miley Cyrus.

Max von Ameln, Sacha’s assistant and chief engineer, says: “We were looking to upgrade our existing monitoring and wanted a speaker system with a subwoofer because we sometimes had issues controlling the low end in our room. The PMCs are a big help to our working life because they give the room dynamics the extra clarity we need. We use the speakers every day and it’s good to know we are able to hear and control the sound exactly how we want to.”

Calrec Chuck Ibey, A1 Mixer, A craft interview Posted: 11/03/2020
Calrec and mdash; Chuck Ibey, A1 Mixer, A craft interview
  1. What is your background and how did you get into broadcast sound?

I have been in live broadcast television since I was 17 and just about to graduate high school. I knew I wanted to be involved in audio, and at first I wanted to be in music. I wanted to tour with a band or work in a studio. After talking with some locals in the industry, they all basically steered me towards television. I started off volunteering with a local production company in Edmonton, and the owner Dave Benson recommended me as a Utility for CFL (Canadian Football). I started working freelance with Dome Productions in 2001 as a teenager and worked my way up to being an A1 around 2010.

dBs Music Opens A Neve Room At Its Plymouth Teaching Facility Posted: 25/02/2020
dBs Music Opens A Neve Room At Its Plymouth Teaching Facility

dBs offers students facilities for learning real world music production and technology skills. To this end, the institution has recently invested in a new recording studio/studio lecture space with a 16 channel Neve Genesys console at its heart.

Entitled the AMS Neve Room, the new facility is located at dBs Music Plymouth and complements other studio facilities offering industry standard equipment.

Stu Welsh, who is responsible for leading the BA (Hons) Music Production and Sound Engineering and MA Innovation in Sound Post Graduate courses, says: “The console was previously installed in our commercial studio but has been moved to the new classroom so that students can have full access it. We are running the console in conjunction with a Pro Tools HD rig and a Studer A800 MkIII 2" tape machine. Although it is a steep learning curve for students, once they are familiar with the routing and the digital layer they soon appreciate the flexibility and efficiency the console delivers – not to mention the great Neve analogue sound.”

The new studio in Plymouth is being used to create audio and video content and will also be used by most, if not all, guest lecturers.

Welsh adds. “Everyone loves working in the Neve Room, it's become one of the most used recording suites at our Plymouth Campus. It is especially popular for recording and for mixing with lots of analogue outboard gear.”

Man Made Music Upgrades Its Surround Monitoring With PMC Posted: 21/11/2019
Man Made Music Upgrades Its Surround Monitoring With PMC

Man Made Music, a Manhattan-based company specialising in sound design, sonic branding and music creation, has been working closely with loudspeaker manufacturer PMC to upgrade the stereo and surround monitoring in one of its two control rooms.

The company has installed a PMC IB2S XBD-A active system for both stereo and 5.1 monitoring and is using PMC Wafer2 passive speakers for Left and Right Rear Surround positions. These provide excellent dispersion and frequency response in a small, rectangular footprint, and because they can easily be mounted to any wall they allow for maximum flexibility in all types of custom-install situations.

Established by award-winning composer and producer Joel Beckerman, Man Made Music creates iconic music and sounds for companies such as Nissan, Disney, Citi, Alzheimer’s Association and HBO. Beckerman’s belief that sound matters was a key reason why the company chose PMC when it decided to upgrade its main Studio A control room.

“The PMCs are hands-down the most true and transparent monitors I've mixed with,” says Beckerman. “They're also so incredibly inspiring to track with, which just makes the music better all-around."

Chief Technician Darren Moore adds: “We do IMAX, immersive and other advanced audio formats, so we were looking for an upgrade to add to the speaker allotment in our main studio. PMC are leading the way for the new Dolby Atmos format and were already outfitting major facilities and schools with Dolby Atmos systems.”

The addition of PMC monitors is providing better full-room coverage and additional reference monitors for mixing in-studio. This, in turn, is allowing clients, guests and larger groups ato enjoy the full surround experience.

NUGEN Delivers Deeper Workflow Control for Producer Mixer Alvin Wee Posted: 20/11/2019
NUGEN Delivers Deeper Workflow Control for Producer Mixer Alvin Wee

For as long as he could remember, Producer/mixer Alvin Wee loved music and film; and he was fortunate enough to cut his teeth working with composers and record producers in Los Angeles on film projects such as Kung Fu PandaKingsman and Eddie the Eagle. Having such a strong background in the industry, Wee takes pride in knowing that when someone hands a project off to him, it will be done correctly, and well. In order to achieve those results, Wee relies on NUGEN Audio’s Producer bundle and Halo Upmix solutions.

Wee’s introduction to NUGEN began as it often does, by word of mouth. “I was talking with industry friends and colleagues. I mentioned that I was looking for a specific product for a project I was working on, and one of them recommended NUGEN,” he says. “Then, I was at a GRAMMY® party and an engineer who is a monster in the business told me that NUGEN’s meters are incredible, so I decided to check them out. I started using the NUGEN plug-ins and, right off the bat, they did exactly what I needed. So, I just kept using them.”

Ideally suited for both mixing and mastering situations, NUGEN’s Producer software provides Wee with a collection of highly flexible award-winning cross-platform plug-ins designed to increase the quality and efficiency of his productions. “The Producer software has been incredibly useful for me,” he adds. “I love the Stereoizer; it’s my go to plug-in that I use on all my mixes and checks. It allows me to control all the low-end and make sure that a recording doesn’t get too wobbly or crazy. I can even make the high-end feel wider and more exciting. It works really well and is very intuitive. The Visualizer tool included in the bundle is also excellent as its meters are tremendous in helping me see what I’m doing.”

PMC Speakers is delighted to announce its support for the Innovation in Music conference, this year hosted by University of West London. It is an international bi-annual event that brings together researchers and professionals interested in the future of the music industry.

The event’s main playback system will utilise a pair of PMC IB2S XBD-A monitors, which will deliver high quality stereo sound. For a special session presenting an ambisonic guitar system, the monitoring will be extended using eight PMC result6 compact nearfield monitors, which are renowned for their high resolution and detail, accurate and extended bass, consistent tonal balance at all levels and wide dispersion and sweet spot.

“This is the third time PMC has supplied monitoring for our Innovation in Music conference and we are really pleased to have their ongoing support,” says Justin Paterson, Professor of Music production and chair of the event. “This conference is all about defining the cutting edge and future of music technology, performance and business, so having access to high grade, top-level monitoring is key to its success.”
