Live OR Transmission in 3D at the University Hospital Tbingen with solutions from Teracue

Live OR Transmission in 3D at the University Hospital Tbingen with solutions from Teracue

Ever since its modernisation at the start of the year, the medical-technical infrastructure in use at Tbingen University Gynaecology Clinic is amongst the most modern of its kind in the world. This also applies to the Telemedicine video transmissions from the operating theatres which can be made in high resolution HD format as well as in 3D. This three dimensional HD live streaming is possible thanks to the innovative encoder and decoder technology from Teracue AG, Germany.

During the inauguration of the newly equipped operating theatre, the guests from the worlds of academia and politics including Baden-Wrttemberg's Minister of Science Theresia Bauer were able to convince themselves of 3D transmissions at the University Hospital's Gynaecology Clinic. In this context, the guests were clearly shown the enormous potential which high resolution, clinical images in HD and 3D offer for the areas of research and teaching through their detail-richness, depth and sharpness. Next, the guests watched the live transmission of a tumour operation on a large canvas screen in the conference centre of the clinic. Transmissions of this kind are being used increasingly for student teaching and academic presentations.

To attain a sustainable design and a future-proof transmission solution, the University Hospital is using approved television and media technology standards. Rudi Luik, responsible for AV media in the business division of IT at University Hospital Tbingen (UKT): "During the course of the updating of our transmission equipment, it was especially important to us to integrate a solution which can work with established media interfaces and formats that can be seamlessly incorporated in our current IT infrastructure. This is one of the main reasons why we decided on the IPTV solutions from Teracue. These are based on the current standards such as HD-SDI and H.264-codec, and completely omit proprietary technologies, especially for 3D use. Therefore we are also open to linking individual manufacturers of medical imaging device technology." For the IP streaming the image signals from the endoscopy devices of manufacturer Karl Storz GmbH & Co. KG were used and transmitted with encoders of type ENC-300-HDSDI from Teracue. This means the video signals from the operating theatres can not only be distributed in high resolution HD, but also in 3D images - throughout the video IP network of University Hospital Tbingen - whose campus is widely spread throughout the city.

At the end of January, this was demonstrated once again in the scope of a two-day international training conference at the University's Department of Neurosurgery. With the help of the streaming technology from Teracue and 3D Microscopy from manufacturer Leica, and in cooperation with TV-Studios Leonberg, the images of the operation were transmitted via live 3D feed. The images from the operating theatre in the Neurosurgery Department were transmitted over the hospital's internal IP network to the lecture theatre in the Department of Anatomy - where in three kilometres distance - the live 3D signals were projected and viewed by the conference participants.

Nevion Virtuoso used in worlds first large scale application of TICO video compression

Nevion, award-winning provider of virtualized media production solutions, has revealed that its flagship software-defined media node Virtuoso was used in the world’s first large-scale application of TICO video compression during the China Media Group’s (CMG) live coverage of the recent celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

Nevion Virtuoso’s TICO media function enables encoding and decoding of UHD/4K video for transport over 10GE/IP or 3G-SDI links, with a visually lossless 4:1 compression ratio and a latency of a few milliseconds. For this event, more than 120 Nevion Virtuosos were used for the live 4K broadcast to billions of viewers via CMG’s China Central Television’s (CCTV) television station and website, as well as 70 4K movie theaters.

PROJECTION ARTWORKS TRANSFORMS INTO PIXEL ARTWORKS Posted: 17/10/2019
PROJECTION ARTWORKS TRANSFORMS INTO PIXEL ARTWORKS

Projection Artworks, the award-winning specialists in light and pixel technology, have rebranded to Pixel Artworks, celebrating the company’s evolution and expanding use of innovative technologies as it continues to move into new global markets.

Tom Burch, Managing Director of Pixel Artworks, said, “For over a decade, our pioneering creative, technical and delivery expertise has grown alongside the incredible advances in pixel-based display technology. For years we’ve been telling clients’ stories through the best medium for that project whether that be OLED, lighting design, LED or projection mapping. It’s time our name reflects this.

“Our clients used to come to us when the nights grew darker and people thought of projection, now our talented team of nearly 50 people across two continents can design virtually limitless concepts that excite, explain and inspire in any environment – from digital out-of-home to giant airport activations, to choreographed live shows and 360-degree immersive experiences. We paint with light, and the world is our canvas.”

Recent projects from Pixel Artworks include the innovative entrance stage to the globally broadcast International Swimming League competition, a large lighting and projection mapping show for the grand opening of The Macallan distillery in Scotland; a touring pop-up pavilion to promote Expo2020 in Dubai featuring LED and entire room of LCD panels, lighting displays and touch screens; and a sensitively portrayed outdoor live immersive experience for the Second World War Museum in Gdansk to mark the 80th anniversary of World War II, with choreographed live theatre, lighting design and projection mapping.

Cinegy products can process mixed SD, HD, 4K/UHD and 8K formats - as well as handle HDR - for capture, playout, monitoring, news, editing, or MAM. All technology being shown at NATEXPO is available immediately.

In addition, Cinegy has now optimised its entire product line to be 8K-ready and deployed in the cloud. One of the early adopters of the open source SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) protocol, Cinegy has SRT baked into all technology, including the license, which removes any concerns about whether users have the legal right, proper subscription, or adequate bandwidth to deploy the software.

Broadcast Solutions to Enter the Market for Used OB Vehicles with a New Service Posted: 17/10/2019
Broadcast Solutions to Enter the Market for Used OB Vehicles with a New Service

Antti Laurila, Global Sales Director at Broadcast Solutions, on the move towards used equipment: “Over the years we see a growing need for used production vehicles in many countries. Some of our customers want to upgrade their production fleet and are looking for means to fund the purchase by selling their used OBs. Therefore, it was a logical step to use our know-how and sales network to help them find the right company to sell to.”

Within the new business unit, Broadcast Solutions acts as the agent mediating between the seller and prospective new customers of used OB vehicles. Part of the service is, of course, refurbishments of the used OBs, depending on the overall condition and the needs of the buyer. The company will also use its technical expertise to advise of potential changes that could be possible and technology choices which may provide additional benefits to the new owner. The company also offers an enhanced full support agreement, tailored to protect both equipment and vehicle. With these continuity schemes, buyers can be confident that their new investment will be protected round the clock by engineers they can trust. Identifying necessary technical upgrades for the vehicles to be future-proof investments is a huge benefit for both parties, causing a frictionless sales process and adding more options for the use of certain vehicles.

Broadcast Solutions offers this service worldwide and starts with already four OB trucks in stock, ready for purchase.

VuWall Increases Control Room Productivity With New VuWall2 Features

VuWall, a leader in video wall control and AV network management, today announced an update to its flagship video wall control and collaboration platform, VuWall2. New enhancements to the powerful software solution include colored borders and color detection, support for the Milestone XProtect unified security platform, further integration with the IHSE Draco tera matrix, and extended KVM support of IP sources.

"A control room must be a highly flexible environment where end users can monitor multiple streams of information efficiently and effectively in order to make critical decisions quickly and accurately," said Paul Vander Plaetse, CEO. "This update to VuWall2 is part of our commitment to ensure our customers work as optimally as possible. Each of these enhancements serves to make the integration and operation process seamless, which is key when there's an ever-increasing number of equipment, data streams, and sources needed to support real-time decision-making."

Colored Borders and Color Detection
VuWall2 boosts operational awareness and productivity with new colored borders around windows that are automatically triggered by events such as intrusion detection or fire alarms. The borders' width and colors are configurable and can even be enhanced with a flashing effect, increasing operator responsiveness. Furthering the platform's automation and awareness capabilities, the software also includes a color-detection feature that triggers a new layout on the video wall after a color change has occurred in a specific pixel location on a source computer running process-control applications. This enables unattended operator stations to remain under 24/7 surveillance.

Starfish provides compliance recording to The National Library of Sweden Posted: 16/10/2019
Starfish provides compliance recording to The National Library of Sweden

Starfish Technologies, a pioneer in transport stream processing and advertising insertion, has supplied a multi-channel compliance recording system to Kungliga biblioteket, The National Library of Sweden in Stockholm, Sweden, in cooperation with Starfish’s Swedish partner Lanlink Digital Broadcast.

The system utilises Starfish’s ‘Verify’ compliance recording technology which can record multiple channels of live TV broadcast and features a fully managed system with auto failover. Built using generic IT hardware from HP, it includes the Starfish web-based monitoring application to view and manage the operation of the N+N configuration. Input signals are presented as encoded transport streams from both the satellite and terrestrial feeds for each channel automatically switching between the two feeds when detecting a missing input.

Starfish Marketing Director Peter Blatchford said, “We have been building systems in Sweden for many years with companies such as TV4 and Red Bee Media and are delighted to have been chosen to now supply The National Library of Sweden. The Starfish Verify Compliance Recording System is highly configurable and utilises our expertise with transport stream processing and web based system monitoring’.

Shanxi Television in China purchases second Calrec Brio console for its new studio Posted: 16/10/2019
Shanxi Television in China purchases second Calrec Brio console for its new studio
China-based Shanxi Television has chosen a Calrec Brio36 audio console for its news programming and multi-purpose talk shows. The Brio is installed in a new studio, which was initially used for covering the China National Youth Games, held this August, with more than 10 hours of live broadcasting produced in the studio each day. This is the broadcaster’s second Brio installation with the first installed a year ago.

Mr. Wu Jie, Supervisor of the technical department of Shanxi Television, commented, “We have been very happy with our first Brio, which has proved to be intuitive to use, with great sound quality and stability. The last point is very important. The intuitive I/O connections and simple-to-use software and surface helped us save a lot of time during installation in this new studio and with the training, too.”

Shanxi Television is a network in the Taiyuan and Shanxi province that broadcasts in Jin Chinese. For the China National Youth Games, they received signals from multiple venues and the hosts and guests adding commentary and comment in the studio.

Mr. Wu Jie explains that they set up the new studio in 10 days, with five days of training, with the Brio’s clear design making it easy for operators to master quickly. Also, functions like swapping a fader on an individual strip, ALT-input, auto mixing and the fact that labelling channel strips is easy are also highlighted, along with the support Calrec partner RAC Pro provided throughout the process.

Later this year, Shanxi Television will be working with 4K content and they anticipate that the Brio’s 5.1 capabilities and expandability will make the use of 4K go smoothly.
