Glensound Electronics has now launched the next generation of Broadcasters Mobile Phones, the GS-MPI004 HD and GS-MPI005 HD.
Glensound have produced the standard in Broadcasters Mobile Phones over recent years with the GS-MPI004 and GS-MPI005. The MPI004 portable unit, and the MPI005 subrack are widely used in broadcast as an extra comms channel for talkback, for off air monitoring, or simply for a quick and convenient way for a reporter or commentator to carry out an interview.
Glensound HD Voice
This new Glensound HD Voice version of Glensounds Broadcasters Mobile Phone adds the impressive new AMR-WB codec. AMR-WB is commonly known as HD Voice as it makes such a dramatic difference to the voice quality of a mobile phone call. The 3.4kHz audio of a 2G mobile call is replaced by 7kHz bandwidth audio, giving much improved lower frequencies, and a much clearer audio connection. This presents great opportunities for clearer connections in outside broadcast talk back systems, and even makes Glensound HD Voice phones suitable for contribution applications.
Sample audio of Glensound HD Voice is available at http://www.glensound.co.uk/uat/downloads/hdaudio.wav
Glensound HD Voice connects as a 3G voice call, not a data call, so when connected you will not lose call quality over the duration of a call, as often experienced on an IP call. If 3G is not available, the call will connect as a standard 2G GSM call.
For the Studio or OB Truck
Both ends of the connection must be AMR-WB compatible for a HD Voice connection. Therefore there is also the Glensound HD Voice rack mount Broadcasters' Mobile Phone, the GS-MPI005 HD. For contributions, a rack mounted GS-MPI005 HD could be based at the studio, with multiple GS-MPI004 HD portable units in the field.
Glensound HD Voice Availability
Availability of AMR-WB is network specific, and varies from country to country. In the UK, HD Voice is available from the Orange and 3 Networks, and calls made must be between the same network. Further networks are expected to adopt HD Voice over the next six months in the UK and around the world. Currently about 40% of Europe offers HD Voice and many other parts of the world are adopting it too.
With Orange and 3, HD Voice has been adopted as a standard technology across their networks, so it is not a cost option. HD Voice is available to you at no extra cost if you are using Glensound HD Voice or compatible phones at each end. As HD Voice is seen as a voice technology, it does not use any data allowance, it is simply seen as a voice connection.
The Glensound HD Voice project was developed by Glensounds Senior Design Engineer Ian Burns, The core AMR-WB technology provide us with a good quality 7kHz audio transport mechanism. With our systems we were able to accurately control the audio input and output levels, making Glensound HD Voice audio very consistent in terms of levels and quality. This is obviously very desirable for audio signals in a broadcast chain.
