KitPlus TV: New linking IPL Series V-lock camera batteries from IDX

The IPL-98 and the IPL-150 are compact powerful batteries from IDX. The IPL-98 is ideal for news and other applications where mobility and the ability to travel with them on aircraft is important. Being under 100Wh, they are in a class of batteries often described as flight safe. An unlimited number can be carried on board an aircraft as cabin baggage. The IPL-150 is a more powerful battery offering extra runtime compared to the IPL-98. Two can be carried on board an aircraft as cabin baggage so they are an ideal solution where extended run times are needed by IPL-98 users. Both batteries carry a label with a QR code to access the relevant regulations.

Typically the run time of a battery is limited by the need to meet flying regulations but the IPL-98 is different. It can be power linked to other IPL batteries increasing the effective capacity. In fact 24hr a day running is supported as typically all the draw is taken from the last battery linked to the camera and when it runs down it can be replaced by another fully charged IPL battery.

Keeping a supply of fully charged batteries is made easier by the ability to stack multiple batteries on the IDX VL-2000S charger

With over 30 years’ experience you would expect IDX to get the ergonomics right and the battery feels right with tactile grip in all the right places. Physically it follows the form factor of the latest cinematographic cameras and an internal honeycomb structure and bumpers on the case outer increase resistance to physical shock.

Features abound with 3 D.C. output plugs to power all the ancillaries now essential to modern film making. One has the popular USB format giving 5.0 Volts at up to 2.3 amps. There is a conventional D-Tap and a D-Tap advanced which allows controlled charging of the battery from the compact and low cost IDX charger, the VL-DT1.

Being IDX, safety is very important with over discharge, over charge and over current battery protection circuitry as standard.

For those needing to find items in the dark, be it the bottom of a kit bag or on a remote wildlife shoot, the IPL-98 and IPL-150 have a V-Torch feature, a small LED light mounted near the V-lock mount that can be activated by the user.

Battery capacity is quickly and accurately accessed externally on the battery via 5 bright LED’s that can be seen in sunlight. For those with equipment able to read the capacity digitally, this feature is supported potentially giving the camera user available run time in the viewfinder
