Welcome ISSUE 121: January 2017 32 Welcome. The good, the bad and the unpredictable was the year that was 2016. Whatever you thought of it then it will be a year to remember as, pushing aside Brexit and Trump, the world of post-production saw high dynamic range being incorporated into UK studio pipelines for the very first time. IBC headlined Ang Lee demonstrating exactly what you can do by shooting at 120 frames per second in combination with stereo 3D and VR became a fully-fledged consumer technology which, according to my Facebook feed, was enjoyed by many over the festive period! Every January we see our industry continuing to develop at an increasingly fast pace leaving the annual question of “What can this year’s most cutting edge innovations tell us about what’s coming next?” This issue might just answer some of the questions from such technologies as Hybrid Cloud MAM solutions and smarter branding to grading the blockbuster ‘Sully’ together with our look at the future of post production on page 38. Read the full story on page 46 to see how it’s done in the UK and in local versions around the world. Later this month the 3rd ITTP (Institute of Training in Television Production) Conference is being held at Pinewood Studios. The aim of the day is to get broadcasters and manufacturers together with educational leaders from around the UK to ensure what is being taught right now is what is needed in the workplace right now. Coming full circle we are in a fast changing industry and equipping the next generation with the skills they need to become employable as well as keeping up the standards we are globally renowned for then this has never been more important.
