Yes, you can point to Pro-Bel being sold to Snell and then onto Quantel. Or Grass Valley being acquired by Belden, and then merged with Miranda. And there are serial acquirers such as Oracle, Harmonic and the Vitec Group. But with the industry moving to IP and the use of off-the-shelf computing, and many former hardware manufacturers now making – far less lucrative, it must be said – software applications, you would be perfectly correct to assume that buy-outs would be far more commonplace. Perhaps that time has come. “The broadcast industry is currently quite fragmented and is primed for consolidation, with a key driver being the migration to all-IT, software-based production environments,” acknowledged Johan Apel, the president and CEO of ChyronHego following the purchase of VidiGo by owner Vector Capital. “ChyronHego is well-equipped to take a lead role in that consolidation and the industry’s IT transformation.
