Welcome ISSUE 103: JULY 2015 W elcome to issue 103 Once upon a time broadcast TV standards were straight forward with regional formats which evolved from analog to digital and with the advent of cable and satellite the channel count jumped. Whilst we travelled through SD and into HD, aside from the hardware changes, the transport of signals remained more or less suffi cient with no more diffi culty in delivering the content than SD had presented. Whilst all this was going on the internet was growing to the stage now where we take it for granted that streaming is just another form of broadcast delivery. Now we are confronted with HDR, UHD and 4k with some serious challenges now facing the industry covering standards and delivery. That short intro should get you in the mood for the feature of this issue which is IP, OTT, MAM and streaming with SMPTE addressing the distribution in this UHD era on page 52. Who better to talk streaming than Larry Jordan himself. If you’ve followed any of Larry’s 40 year+ journey you’ll know of his knowledge and teaching of the subject and this month he tells us what he uses in his own studio for three hours of weekly streaming. On the subject of inspirational characters Alister Chapman was a key speaker on our recent Tour and is known world wide for his storm chasing fi lmmaking. Enough said here but please do turn to page 64, the images are stunning and if you are in search of an adventure then Alister’s next trip may tempt you…. A recent IABM (International Association of Broadcast Manufacturers) survey reported that the biggest challenge facing its members was educating their customers. One such manufacturer tackling the task is Dalet who have their own academy offering free video shorts. We are serializing a selection of their classes over the coming issues starting this month with the issues surrounding re-versioning content. See more on page 42. A big thank you to those that made it to the June Tour where the latest kit (including the new Sony NX100) was in abundance for all to see and get up close with. We’ve a full gallery report on the event on page 26, go to for info on our main November event.
