XDCAM is the most widely supported, reliable and popular tape-less acquisition system for professional and broadcast applications.
The PDW-U1 expands the IT capabilities of XDCAM by offering a simple, portable drive for use with PCs or Macs for viewing applications (with free software from Sony) or for full read/write access with compatible NLEs.
The PDW-U1 also works with dual-layer XDCAM media.
Recording to dual-layer discs (50 GB) is a feature exclusive to a range of Sony products, including the XDCAM HD PDW-F355 and PDW-F335 camcorders and the HDPDW-F75 XDCAM HD deck.

Dual Layer support
The PDW-U1 incorporates a drive for single layer (23 GB) and dual layer (50 GB) digital media. Dual layer discs allow you to record up to 3 hours of DVCAM and over 4 hours of MPEG HD at 18 Mb/s, and over 145 minutes at 35 Mb/s.
