When a lens is more than just a lens
KitPlus Matching shots between different cameras can be tricky at the best of times. But how do you match lens characteristics between a live action shoot and a CGI composition? The CP.3 XD lenses from Zeiss offer an efficient solution to this with their frame accurate meta-data.

Selecting the right broadcast minicam lens
Steffan Hewitt So we all know that HD and 4K (and beyond) is the norm for content creation and delivery, with the need for unique and versatile shots being offered to increase the audiences participation and visual experiences. A major factor aside from the camera itself is the selection of lens, for some of the UHD sensor formats a broad spectrum of "off the shelf" lenses exist - this however can mean that in some restrictive instances (such as In-Goal and In-Car environments) the physical size of the camera and lens are too large and therefore not suitable for the application.

Lenses cant be that complicated can they? Part 1
Graham Reed Many people who use lenses have very little understanding in the complexity or the science that goes on behind them. I do not pretend to be an expert on optics but I have spent some time in trying to understand just how complex they are.

DOPs discuss minicams, lenses, 4k and all
Mel Noonan If anyone knows about the practical reality of using minicams and lenses it has to be the DOPs who are out there using them. We are now seeing minicams used in all areas of production, some with 1080p and 4K capability at prices you would not have believed possible a few years back.

3D filmmaking
N/A Stereographers are in demand, they have little time and the time they do have is highly valued. I first met Demetri at IBC this year during the showing of HUGO (see page XX) and we were fortunate enough to catch up with him again during a flight to LA where he was heading for the first stage of 3D post for 47 RONIN. His opinions on 3D filmmaking are respected the world over¦over to you Demetri¦.

Why a new range of cases?
N/A Surprisingly we discovered that some bags and cases - even very popular and well established models - lacked basic features required for Northern Europe, such as wet weather protection. These may be fine in drier climates but for wet Novembers in Ireland or damp spring mornings in Wales, these bags were, in our view, putting equipment at risk.

Casual specs
N/A If you are a regular reader of this column, you probably know by now that I am a lover of technology that is useful, or at least very attractive. On the other hand I am quite scornful of stuff that engineers come up with because they can, without ever having an idea of what it is for.

Anaglyph, old hat but still useful
N/A There are now many technologies for viewing 3D on television or the cinema. The oldest, dating from the 1850s, is the anaglyph glasses. Im sure everyone is familiar with the red and green style of old, though those particular single colours are hardly used these days.

Commonwealth Games Will Be All Right On The Night
N/A Fans of Bollywood films will be familiar with the classic Indian wedding storyline in which complete chaos usually engulfs the event right up to the moment when the groom arrives, at which point everything comes together and everyone has a whale of a time and puts behind them the dramas that preceded the ceremony. The XIX Commonwealth Games (CWG) in Delhi had all of these ingredients thrown in and more besides.

Television camera lenses
N/A This is a glass-to-glass report with a difference, starting at front-end of the video production chain and staying there. Given the speed of development in almost every other branch of television, it is easy to overlook the advances taking place in optics. Until, that is, you need a wider capture angle than your existing kit can deliver or you want to post-repair a barrel-distorted Nelson's Column to remove the hint of banana.
