Magewell Unveils Modator Chassis for Centralised Encoder and Decoder Management

What production requirement is this new chassis built to meet?
As production facilities expand and IP video infrastructures scale up, the need for centralised control over multiple encoders and decoders becomes essential. Managing a growing fleet of standalone devices can lead to rack clutter, power inefficiencies, and operational complexity. Magewell’s new Modator chassis addresses this by consolidating its existing encoder and decoder range into a modular, high-density rackmount system designed for streamlined oversight and efficient deployment.

How did broadcasters and facilities manage before?
Previously, engineers using Magewell’s encoding and decoding devices deployed them as individual units, each requiring its own power source, cabling, and configuration. While the devices were well-regarded for reliability and performance, installations with more than a handful became difficult to monitor and maintain, particularly across multiple sites or remote locations. Troubleshooting meant visiting devices individually, and power redundancy often had to be handled externally.

What makes the Modator chassis an improvement?
The Matador system repackages Magewell’s proven encoder and decoder modules into hot-swappable blades, all housed in a single rackmount unit with dual redundant power supplies for improved reliability. Each slot maintains the performance of the original standalone version, while the system offers a unified status display on the front panel, showing CPU usage, temperature, and module health at a glance.
Current module options include an SDI+ encoder capable of 4K60 streaming over NDI|HX, SRT, RTMP, and more. HDMI encoder and decoder modules are already available, along with an AIO version that combines HDMI and SDI I/O in one blade. The system is designed for easy setup, modules slide into place tool-free, and supports future expansion with more variants expected soon.

Who is this platform best suited for?
The Modator chassis is ideal for broadcast facilities, live event venues, and corporate AV environments managing multiple IP video endpoints. It suits teams looking for centralised control, easy maintenance, and future scalability without compromising on quality or flexibility. Whether managing a handful of encoders or an entire fleet across remote sites, the Modator offers a practical and efficient way to scale up with confidence.
