Looking for the Silver Lining
Harry Grinling According to the World Meteorological Organisation, there are 10 different types of cloud, each of which can be divided further into sub-types. They range from the cirrus, the thin floaty clouds which generally serve only to make the sky look beautiful to the towering, all-embracing cumulonimbus which can deliver fearful quantities of rain – the biggest cumulonimbus clouds can contain 50 million tonnes of water.

University and Mental Health
Rhiannon Jenkins University study and mental health has been in the media quite a bit over the last year, and I’m sure there are many people wondering what is going on? The issues are complex, and I suppose the focus of employability off the back of a degree course has raised the stress stakes for a lot of young people. I’m only qualified to talk about this from my perspective, and my story began when I joined a course not knowing I had a mental health condition.

Managing Technological Change
Alan Wheable Continual technological change in the broadcast and media industries can make it difficult to plan for the mid to long term. Typically, broadcasters and media organisation are still implementing the last set of changes to working practices when the next changes come along.

Fast-moving productions need multi-cam RF reliability
Darren Bilton Wireless acquisition creates a level of freedom not possible with any other form of filming yet only a decade ago the technique was barely possible. The technology enabling live real-time connections over radio frequencies has advanced leaps and bounds such that there is barely an entertainment, documentary, sports or news format today that doesn’t benefit from at least one link system. That means the demands on the kit continues to rise and includes the need for fail safe multi-camera operation, ease of use and backwards compatibility all within a small, lightweight and budget-friendly package.

How todays technology platforms can make AMAZING seem mundane
Bruce Devlin - new Some things never change. It's September and it's time for another IBC. Maybe I'm getting old and maybe I have selective memory about the past, but recently there hasn't been the buzz of years gone by. Sure, as you wander around the vast halls there will be lots of enthusiastic sales people trying to give you the best demo possible, but something has changed and to survive, I believe that vendors and customers need to change too.

AoIP in the intercom world
John Sparrow Everyones talking about using AoIP (Audio over IP) in the broadcast world, but what does it mean to the operators actually making the production - the intercom users? And after years of interoperability taking the lowest common format of analogue tie-lines (also known as 4-wires), has intercom today already moved into the digital world by sharing digital audio resources with other types of hardware?

With competition coming from all angles and different technological camps advocating different approaches to infrastructure and the way forwards. With the number of different variables increasing, the choices of whether to use SDI or IP infrastructures, and the choices around HDR and WCG let alone the on-going distraction of UHD / 4K.

What is the future of video contribution?
Mark Andrews - new Live Streaming is a generic term and can apply to any part of the process from capture on the camera where video is immediately streamed, to the process of playout on any device. Playout is a huge subject in itself. However "video contribution" is considered the terminology used to capture at the camera end, and to deliver live video from the camera to where ever it needs to go.

Meeting the Challenges of Media Assett Management
Dave Clack It's been 20 years since Microsoft founder Bill Gates uttered the words "content is king," and never has that statement been more true in media production environments. NAB Review
Duncan Payne As I emerge from the customary post-NAB haze and try to formulate a coherent analysis of the 2016 show, perhaps the most striking realisation is that despite pacing the halls for four long days, I barely scratched the surface. The scale of the event, much like Las Vegas itself, is simply extraordinary, with over 100,000 attendees and nearly 1900 exhibitors. Right from the first morning of the show, my social media feeds have been full of reviews of amazing products and technical advancements, many of which I just didnt get time to see.  Here, however, are some highlights of the things I did manage to get to.

Class: Multi - Channel Audio
Bruce Devlin If you're given a media file and it has 16 channels of audio then life can quickly become the opposite of boring, especially if it has to go to air quickly and the supplier is new. Put simply there are many ways in which the different channels can be laid out in the file, but there isn't a single overall standard for labelling them. Enter SMPTE ST 377-4 - the Multi-Channel Audio Labelling specification (MCA). It's really boring and this is a good thing.

The evolution of vision mixers
Liam Laminman At the heart of any multi-camera production is a vision mixer or production switcher as some people call them. Its core role is the switching of different sources, primarily cameras, often VTs and sometimes incoming external sources such as remote feeds from broadcasters. Even for non-TV types, thats relatively simple enough to get your head round several different incoming video signals can be switched from one to the next. Vision mixers come into their own when you look at their secondary features of keying graphics, transitions and digital effects.

UHD: a long road travelled
Julian Fernandez Theres no denying it, Ultra HD (UHD) is impressive and the clarity of image is captivating, but its going to take a while for UHD to become mainstream in the home. A fairly expensive large screen TV is a must to get the best picture quality and since the majority of the world isnt yet watching television in HD, UHD still has a long way to go. However, its an exciting technological innovation and solutions providers and broadcasters have to adapt to ensure that they are UHD-ready. It was no surprise when on-demand platform providers set the pace for UHD delivery last year. Netflix was the first to launch its UHD service with season two of its popular House of Cards series; Amazon followed suit at the end of 2014 and Sky and DirectTV are also now commissioning UHD content.

Combining on-site and cloud storage
Alan Hoggarth Technology and profitability have an intimate and often complicated relationship. A new invention may open up the possibility of new forms of business, or greater efficiency in existing businesses. Sometimes the invention may be a response to a clear need necessity being the mother of invention. But on other occasions a technological advance may have good theoretical applications but be economically impractical to implement.

Venice live productions tools go to the consumer
Tim Felstead The objective of most studio production is to cost effectively create live or as live television to which audiences will be drawn. During the process of creation, recording into media servers can either be a separate process used only for immediate replay, or can be part of a media workflow serving multiple target audiences in parallel. Rohde and Schwarz have invested heavily in its Venice Media Production Hub to ensure it is able to fulfil the requirements for the latter. A media production hub is a central component of media workflows, managing movements and transformations from one media type to another.

The Autoue Motion Pro camera stabiliser
Matt Lyne

The Autocue Motion Pro camera stabiliser is a brilliant piece of kit for getting high movement shots whilst also maintaining the ability to pan/tilt with ease. It is light compared to similar functioning stabilisers however prolonged use will quickly tire out your arm due to the manner in which you hold it with one hand at almost arms length but that said, it’s far less tiring than similar steadicams such as a Glidecam.

Eye to Eye: Video Post-production
N/A Video post-production has long been one of the fastest developing subsets of the broadcast business. It was among the first to lead the shift from hardware into software, bringing huge advantages in terms of affordability and ease of use. I can still remember the high cost, heavy weight and low quality of the early analogue tape to tape video editing systems. The expression 'colour comes later' returns to mind. IBC will see the introduction of quite a lot of new video-post kit including a respectable amount designed to handle 3D content which I will start off with.
