An effective strategy for monitoring broadcast audio loudness levels
N/A One of the factors affecting a television viewers satisfaction and overall quality of experience is the consistency of the audio level of the programming. Inconsistent loudness levels between channels or between programming and advertisements can ruin a viewers television watching experience. Over the past several years, erratic audio levels have become such a source of contention among television viewers worldwide that countries have created guidelines and standards designed to minimize audio-level discrepancies.

Automating intelligence across the signal flow
N/A Back when broadcasters maintained small channel lineups, monitoring was a simple task that could be performed cost-effectively by station staff. The manual system-wide monitoring of critical audio and video parameters required dedicated staff all along the broadcast chain, but the investment typically could be justified. However, even with dedicated human monitoring, it still was extremely difficult for a single operator to cope with multiple language tracks, multi-channel audio, and the ever-increasing amounts of technical and operational metadata that tie automated systems together.

Testing times of a 4K world
N/A The term '4K' applies to some five slightly different picture formats with around 4,000 pixel horizontal resolution: all much bigger than HD. In fact roughly four times the total pixels required for 1920 x 1080 pixel high definition. 4K has been around for some years but was until recently only affordable by producers with mega budgets. Advances in camera sensor and display technology are now allowing manufacturers to offer 4K products at prices not too much more than their high definition equivalents.

4KTV The next bigger thing?
Bob Pank# The history of 4K digital moving images goes way back to the mid 1990s. That was when film effects started to be processed digitally and produced amazing results maybe a bit too amazing for some. Of course the effects had to be seamless and so the digitised effects images had to carry all the required detail of the 35mm film. Without going into detail Kodak maintained that this required at least a 4K image, while Quantel, busy in the effects equipment market, felt that 3K did the job.

Handheld T and M the broadcast emergency service
Will Strauss# Test and Measurement. Shudder. Like Health and Safety, Bus and Replacement Service or Keith and Orville its a collocation of words that fills me with dread. Seriously, who wants to read about Test and Measurement? Well, as it turns out, the answer is: quite a lot of people. Because, despite its lack of glamour, it is hugely important.

TV-BAY Questions
N/A This is a hobby that has got out of control! I was always keen of Tape recorders, and my son who is now 24, has followed the same pattern with an edit suite at aged 10. I have had no formal training and so Ive have had to learn from the ground up, which has involved designing and building complete control room. That has meant an awful lot of BNC Crimping.

Evolving Test and Measurement
N/A Time and accuracy are vital when producing content for broadcast. All broadcasters have strict schedules to work to, as well as visual and audio standards that need to be met. Effective testing and measurement (T&M) of any material that is to be transmitted is key to ensuring these parameters are adhered to, for both producer and broadcaster; get these wrong, or trust in inadequate equipment, and it could be very costly.

Beaten by branding
N/A I should say right at the start that I very much like Pixel Powers James Gilbert. He is charming company, an excellent engineer and a good judge of wine. Yet, for all these admirable qualities, I hold him personally responsible for one of the greatest evils of modern society.

Ask the Experts - Loudness
N/A Introduction: Loudness level inconsistencies are one of the most common problems in the broadcast industry. Loudness standards are now being introduced as discontinuities in audio levels between programs, or between programs and advertisements, have been the cause of viewer complaints in fact they are the number one cause. Of course anything that causes complaints is a concern to broadcasters complaints mean dissatisfied customers, reduced revenue from subscriptions and lowered ads, and now with the introduction of legislation, fines.
