Bob Pank# Often exhibitions such as IBC and NAB can be summed up as progressive slightly better products but nothing really new. Sometimes there is a breakthrough such as Ampexs introduction of the VTR in 1956. The early years of digital production and post tools were rich in totally new things. At the time I worked at Quantel and seeing inventions like Paintbox and a DVE video page turn for the first time was truly exciting; I knew these would be game-changers. What they did was instantly understandable and easy to apply. So, you may ask, why should it be that we are many years into the 3D revolution of the modern era and everyone knows what we really need to make 3DTV come alive, but we dont have.

Mastering a tough business
N/A I recently had a great day out, visiting a company which is enjoying a massive boom in business, has customers prepared to wait as much as a year for its products, and is trying to recruit dedicated staff to increase output. Yet its chairman says manufacturing is a tough business to be in.

Casual specs
N/A If you are a regular reader of this column, you probably know by now that I am a lover of technology that is useful, or at least very attractive. On the other hand I am quite scornful of stuff that engineers come up with because they can, without ever having an idea of what it is for.

Anaglyph, old hat but still useful
N/A There are now many technologies for viewing 3D on television or the cinema. The oldest, dating from the 1850s, is the anaglyph glasses. Im sure everyone is familiar with the red and green style of old, though those particular single colours are hardly used these days.
