Since the last issue, I've had a busy first term back at Ravensbourne. Our Enterprise and Entrepreneurship unit is designed for us to gain business skills and launch us into the industry. We were given the task to come up with a product or service and make money from it. The unit worked towards exhibiting at Penrose Market, which takes place at our University, at which we sell our product or service to members of the public and industry professionals. For me, I found this an ideal time to begin my journey as a freelancer and advertising my skills as a Director. I made my website (www.alicevictoriamedia.co.uk) incorporating my directorial showreel, designed business cards and started to create hype on social networking sites. The event, which took place on November 20th - 21st was full of eager students who were ready to sell their products and skills and was a great success overall. Personally, I found it an ideal opportunity for networking, meeting more potential crew members and have managed to gain some good leads for upcoming projects.
Alongside our business unit, we have been developing our skills in pre-production. Our lecturers put us into groups of five that had us organise a shoot within three weeks, including castings and script re-writes. For this, I took up the roles of Producer and Project Manager rather than Director, with the intention of further increasing my skillset. Our cast were all under the age of 16 and it was complicated to produce a complex film in such a short period of time. After a successful shoot on the 24th and 25th of November, the film is now in the post-production stage. This unit gave us all a great insight into the workings of the film industry and prepared us for the fast turnaround of productions that is so common in our field of work.
As 2012 comes to a close, I look back and see the achievements I have made and how much I am developing as a person and as a professional. Now, looking towards January 2013 and what it holds for me is daunting as the dissertation and portfolio are our main tasks, but it will be the most stimulating climax to my education. I must say I'm so excited to be at the forefront of filmmaking again. Consequently, I am already working with scriptwriters to begin developing story lines and have formed an inspiring collaboration with an imaginative Producer which will enable me to work more effectively as a Director. I am expecting to be directing at least three films for my portfolio project, with bigger budgets, bigger scripts, and even bigger vision. Bring it on.
