Canon EOS C300 MkII Camera Review
Andy McKenzie Canon described the EOS C300 Mark II at its launch as 'a game-changer for creative film-making'. What interested me was whether the camera's impressive feature set, compact size and very aggressive price point matched the needs of the video production market.

Viva La Microphone Evolution
KitPlus 2018 marks the twentieth year of Sennheiser Evolution microphones - a range of wired and wireless live performance microphones and wireless systems that took Sennheiser from relatively small-volume broadcast manufacturing to a prime position on stages around the world. Last November, Sennheiser UK marked this auspicious occasion by holding an evening of storytelling, hosted by Jamie Gosney and featuring Michael Polten, Martin Fischer and Andrew Lillywhite, all key members of the Sennheiser Evolution team, as well as Pete Malandrone (guitar tech to Dr Brian May), Joe Campbell (monitor engineer for artists include Chris Rea, Placebo and Adele) and Chris Denman (producer of the live sessions at Global Radio) who have all used, and loved, Evolution microphones for many years.

Dedo DLED3 Microlighting Kit Review
Jonathan Harrison Having recently had the immense pleasure of getting my hands on the new Minisoftbox adapter ring for the Dedo DLED3 that takes the soft box that fits the standard DLH4 & DLED7. Size matters here! Delivering on the 4k Promise
Lorna Garrett It’s happened. Consumers are demanding 4K UHD content. They have the TVs, smartphones, tablets and other devices they need, and with much of Netflix and Amazon original content in 4K, as well as sports coverage from BT and Sky, consumers have tasted the future of content quality and are hungry for more. But broadcasters need not worry if their customers have enough bandwidth to receive 4K content - the solutions are ready to make 4K distribution a reality. New viewers are waiting if you’re ready to get to them first.

Looking back at IBC 2017
Duncan Payne IBC feels like a bit of a dim and damp memory now, but a few over-riding memories do remain however, not least of which was the Arri party to celebrate its 100th year. It was like an old-school manufacturers IBC/NAB party, back when manufacturers had marketing budgets, and lots of sales people. It got IBC off to a great start; thanks Arri.

Canon CN-E 18-80mm T4.4 Review
Ben Sherriff The Canon Cine range of lenses have been around for quite a few years now. The CN-E Cinema Prime lenses became an early alternative to using PL adaptors or the Zeiss Compact Prime lenses. Other than that the choice was rehoused stills lenses or maybe if you were lucky a set of Zeiss super speeds. The cine lens set became a cost effective offering for sharp prime lenses with clear and accurate markings for proper functionality.

What is the future of video contribution?
Mark Andrews - new Live Streaming is a generic term and can apply to any part of the process from capture on the camera where video is immediately streamed, to the process of playout on any device. Playout is a huge subject in itself. Sound Devices: My Choice For Everything Audio
Darren Brisker Ever since I can remember, I have had a passion and curiosity for sound and sound recording. A virtual world but call it cloud if you must
Jan Weigner I prefer not to use the word "cloud". It's useful for eight points in Scrabble, but in broadcasting, if we can still call it that, what you're really describing is storing data on someone else's computer or, on an industrial scale, a whole lot of someone else's computers (data centres). Cloud is just a convenient way of saying "shedload of capacity".

Sony PXW-FS5 Review
Alister Champman I was lucky enough to get some hands on time with a prototype FS5 in Amsterdam at IBC. In case you havent heard about it, the PXW-FS5 is a compact interchangeable lens, super 35mm camcorder from Sony that can record in HD or UHD 4K. No broadcast without flawless communication
KitPlus Reliable and fail-safe communications for the broadcast of live events are more important than ever. On site, broadcasters only have one chance to grab the perfect image for the viewer with time being a crucial factor. The larger the event, the more viewers it reaches and the higher the risk that something could go wrong. As a consequence, reliable, non-blocking, high-performance communication between all participants is essential. In broadcasting, nothing can happen unless everyone can talk and communicate with each other, explains Nico Lewis, Senior Sales Manager RTS Intercoms. That is why high profile live events such as Wimbledon, the Winter Games or the Superbowl rely on RTS intercom systems to provide communication in their broadcasting OB trucks.

How HEVC technology is revolutionizing field-based broadcasting
Eli Garten High-Efficiency Video Encoding (HEVC), also known as H.265, is the subsequent generation of H.264 and tapped to be the next widely adopted standard for video compression. As with any MPEG evolution, the new standards goal is to make compression more efficient and allow for reducing OPEX and CAPEX in various video delivery applications. With the introduction of the last major compression innovation, H.264, video applications experienced roughly half the data rates of the predecessor MPEG-2. With HEVC, the industry is predicting a similar ambitious result: achieving half the data rates of H.264. In only its first generation of development, HEVC is already providing data efficiencies of up to 40-percent while retaining the same image quality. As the codec continues to evolve and the broadcast market approaches more widespread adoption of 4K resolutions, there will be a strong push to achieve the 50-percent efficiency mark.

The IP revolution in television is only the beginning
Simen Frostad The fundamental change brought about by the delivery of video content via IP is perhaps the most significant development in the history of televised entertainment because it allows the viewer for the first time to shape the viewing experience. Time, in the sense of the linear delivery of channels, is dissolved, and possibly the concept of channels themselves will also dissolve. Viewers can store, cache and play back video when they want, and experience it at various grades of quality. In a sense the viewer can also be the curator of the service at the point of delivery.
