Missing Parts Of The Spectrum
Graham Jaggers Since the phasing out of conventional filament light bulbs and their replacement with fluorescent and LED, many manufacturers indicate the colour accuracy of their lamps with a CRI (Colour Rendering Index) number.

How full is your spectrum?
Ian Muir Colour tuneable (Bi-Colour) LED based lamps are now increasingly commonplace in the world of Film and Broadcast. Their capacity to provide a choice of colour temperatures, usually in the realms of 3200K to 5600K, can be extremely useful. This is particularly beneficial when working in environments where setup time is at a premium, and a light source is required that matches the available ambient light.

What you see is what you get? Doubtful!
Robin Palmer The colour you see is not necessarily the same colour experienced by someone else looking at the same thing. It all depends on the viewer and the viewing conditions as well as the actual colour of the thing. People involved in broadcast, video editing and movie colour grading are probably unlikely to have been subjected to a compulsory Ishihara colour vision test.

Why does my project look different on every screen I watch it on?
Thomas Urbye

The age old question, asked by so many people who’ve come through my suite: “I’ve downloaded it to my laptop and it looks different?”. Then there is the inevitable panic: “Thomas, how can we make sure that everyone who watches it, watches it ‘properly’?”. This issue recently came to light with a campaign backed by moviemakers launched to make sure films are watched "as the director intended".

Is it time to review your colour grading toolset?
Mark Brindle

One important step for all budget levels of post-production is the colour correction or grading tools you use to match the colour of different shots in your edit, to give a consistent look and feel. How much time you can spend on grading will depend on your budget, but if you can perform more tasks in less time with better and cheaper tools, then perhaps you should be looking at your workflow?
