An Obituary to Timecode
Bruce Devlin - new A stoic and persistent character that stubbornly refused to change with the times, Timecode has finally passed on, but no-one has noticed. A long-lasting industry veteran, Timecode was brought into this world at an uncertain date in the late 1960s due to the needs of analogue tape workflows and the demand for synchronisation between audio and video devices. A joint activity between SMPTE and the EBU led to the work on Time and Control codes starting its journey to standardisation in the early 1970s.

The party is not over until the video is online
Paul Scurrell When we were introduced to the team behind Sensation dance events in Amsterdam they had one big question for Timecode Systems: could our SyncBac VR wireless sync and control solution theoretically make it possible for a high quality, professional 360-degree video of a live dance music event to be edited in the time it takes the DJ to fly to his or her next gig? Intrigued by what our solution could help them achieve, in July they invited us to film at one of their iconic dance music events. Billed as The Final it was a sell-out farewell party to mark the last Sensation event in Amsterdam.

Welcome to the world of filming The Island with Bear Grylls
Paul Scurrell How do you make a polished television show worthy of broadcast on Channel 4 when the camera operators are starving, dehydrated and sleep deprived? Most of them also have no previous experience of professional filming and are more concerned with finding their next meal than making sure they've got their cameras switched on ready to record. Welcome to the world of filming The Island with Bear Grylls.

IBC - how was it you
Duncan Payne IBC 2016 was very much a launching show, with more new products and updates than in many recent IBC's or NAB's. With so many of these announcements directly in the remit of a cameraman, blink and you'd miss the next big thing in camera and lenses news. With this in mind, this review focuses on camera and lenses only.

The future of timing and timecode
Bruce Devlin It is SMPTE's 100th anniversary! I hope that all readers have had a chance to view the Centennial Video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN2yYrEFMFQ) and to contemplate that 100 years ago we were in the dawn of the cinema era, where different equipment used different frame rates, different sprocket sizes, different frame sizes and the concept of distributing and delivering content between different manufacturers was a real headache.

The 4K Conundrum
Eric Achtmann 2015 has confirmed once more that 4K remains the TV industrys Holy Grail. While 4K TV screens are becoming more affordable and Netflix, Amazon Prime and even YouTube are beginning to offer some 4K content, mass adoption is still sluggish as the increases in bandwidth required for distribution make 4K business models difficult to stack-up.

The importance of storage
Larry Jordan# "What's the best computer to edit video?" It's a great question - it's just the wrong question. Yes, CPU speed is important and the Internet is buzzing with the latest specs on GPUs. But, today, virtually any currently shipping computer is more than adequate to edit video; even 4K.

The Cloud, a big hit at NAB with Bob Pank
Bob Pank# NAB 2013 will go down in history as the event where the broadcast industry took to the Cloud in a big way. Perhaps it was the number of start-ups that have been successfully operating cloud services for a year, but more likely, these moves have been in the pipeline for a while.

Closed Captioning Comes to IP and Mobile TV
N/A As mobile or IP-based TV becomes increasingly popular with viewers, so will the demand for closed captioning for the deaf or hard of hearing. Lawmakers are already flexing their muscles regarding this issue, with the U.S. federal government enacting regulations making it mandatory for broadcasters to supply closed captioning for IP and mobile programming. It will not be long before European legislators devise similar regulations. Broadcasters who arent prepared when these regulations become law may find themselves facing fines and other penalties. To avoid this, it helps to understand the basics of implementing closed captioning for mobile and IP-based television.

Monitoring in the file-based environment
N/A One of the major challenges facing broadcasters and content producers today is quality control. In the traditional model QC was performed by skilled viewers in real time, watching the content on a good monitor alongside a waveform monitor and audio meters to ensure the technical parameters were optimised.

Realising the full benefits of hybrid broadcast and broadband
N/A We are all clear that there is a great deal of momentum in pay television at the moment. Alongside that driver, though, there are others which are dramatically changing the way consumers watch television. These include the desire to watch programmes at a time of their choice not that of the broadcaster (and in the room of their choice), and the use of other devices laptops, smartphones, tablets at the same time as watching television.

Post Production Recipes
N/A Multi-camera editing adds zest to any video production. It captures an event - a moment - from different angles, conveying a comprehensive and nuanced message. Often underrated, sound is a key ingredient in the mix. For the highest quality sound, separately recorded (dual-system) audio is the preferred technique.
