How LiveU Has Changed The Way We Work At ITV Daytime
Tim Guilder As my job title suggests, I’m responsible for planning and executing technology projects across ITV’s Daytime, including outside broadcasts, which are central to what we do. We broadcast live for more than six hours every weekday with four shows: Good Morning Britain, This Morning, Lorraine and Loose Women. With a history as one of the main UK terrestrial broadcasters – of course, we have also evolved alongside the industry in terms of viewing options – we have high standards. We constantly generate new ideas to keep audiences engaged and we also need to be responsive to the latest breaking news.

4k and HDR Wireless Camera Transmitters
David Edwards Across the globe, live events represented over 50 percent of the most watched TV programs last year. However, big budget episodic shows are impacting live TV and the way viewers want to see their content. Viewers are demanding the same quality of production for live event broadcasts as they see in pre-recorded TV series and films. Producers of live content are looking to new, immersive and cinematic mobile camera views to better achieve these results. This presents a challenge to live production teams as these new camera views and angles must match the quality of the rest of the production -  the demand for mobility means that the cameras need to be wireless.

Cellular Network Congestion at the Royal Wedding
Rob Waters As with all major events, planning for the Royal Wedding and surveying potential broadcast locations and securing reliable connectivity for video over IP workflows was top of mind for Canada’s Global TV. For major live broadcasts, in particular, when the entire world is watching, an extremely high degree of confidence is crucial because the live feeds need to be transmitted without fail.

Empowering connectivity choice in the field
Yvonne Monterroso Reliability, flexibility and ease of use are the key requirements when covering the news and live events, especially when the location could be anywhere. Connectivity is one of the biggest concerns in the field when the pressure is on to capture a key event – if you cannot establish a reliable transmission path to send your video back to the broadcast studio, there is no story.

Driving the Bandwidth Conundrum
Dick Hobbs - new At the time of writing, there is a story on the IBC website with the headline "In five years the problem won't be bandwidth, but knowing what to do with it". That seemed to me to be an interesting assertion, so I read on.

Highly Experienced
Dick Hobbs. I was recently asked to write an article on quality of experience in video streaming. Obviously the first thing I did was ask Saint Google to find me recent research on the subject.

Easy and accurate testing of low-power transmitters for digital TV
N/A Twenty-five kilograms or more: That is how much the test equipment needed for testing digital television transmitters a test receiver, spectrum analyzer, and power meter weigh all together. This weight is not an issue for a transmitter like the one on the Olympic Tower in Munich. It is easily accessible with a van and the elevators in the tower. But what about the many gap-filler stations and transposers?

Post Production Ask The Experts
N/A Its a familiar scenario: A client calls with an urgent transfer request. It may be a movie sourced at 23.98PsF that needs conversion for broadcast, and the client needs an HD version at 1080 50i with Dolby E audio and an SD program at 625 50i with PCM audio, as well. Or perhaps the content was shot at 1080 59.94i, but the client needs a 720 59.94p version for transmission. Or, maybe the client wants to replay a 1980s SD program series on a new HD channel. These jobs can become unexpectedly complex and time-consuming if content arrives in a less-than-ideal state.

Realising the full benefits of hybrid broadcast and broadband
N/A We are all clear that there is a great deal of momentum in pay television at the moment. Alongside that driver, though, there are others which are dramatically changing the way consumers watch television. These include the desire to watch programmes at a time of their choice not that of the broadcaster (and in the room of their choice), and the use of other devices laptops, smartphones, tablets at the same time as watching television.

Using Multipoint Monitoring to Ensure Reliable Digital Video Delivery
N/A Because the quality and bandwidth-efficiency advantages of digital over analog methods have made digital transport preferred, the world continues its migration to an all-digital approach to delivering video signals from the studio through distribution networks to the end-viewer. As with any new technology, adopting and integrating digital video delivery brings new and diverse challenges challenges that may affect video quality and delivery reliability in unexpected (and undesired) ways.

Television camera lenses
N/A This is a glass-to-glass report with a difference, starting at front-end of the video production chain and staying there. Given the speed of development in almost every other branch of television, it is easy to overlook the advances taking place in optics. Until, that is, you need a wider capture angle than your existing kit can deliver or you want to post-repair a barrel-distorted Nelson's Column to remove the hint of banana.
