Looking back at IBC 2017
Duncan Payne IBC feels like a bit of a dim and damp memory now, but a few over-riding memories do remain however, not least of which was the Arri party to celebrate its 100th year. It was like an old-school manufacturers IBC/NAB party, back when manufacturers had marketing budgets, and lots of sales people. It got IBC off to a great start; thanks Arri.

Boradcast playout on-site and in the cloud
Don Ash Broadcasters come in many shapes and sizes, each with their own unique set of ambitions and their own preferred route to success. Some are happy to innovate, particularly if it increases staff efficiency or reduces operating costs. Others prefer to let their competitors do the innovating and then follow whatever path appears to work best. Thus the industry has advanced from dedicated hardware to more flexible and cost-efficient software running on 'enterprise-platform' comput-ers, and more recently to virtual devices.

Media Production Show and other news
Duncan Payne So, the 2nd Media Production Show has been and gone. Hands up who went to Islington by mistake? I know at least two people who did. Their secret is safe with me! For me, the sign of a great trade show is when I come away really enthused about an innovative use of existing technology or a brand new product. When I find something that combines both these things, then I'm a very happy man.

Navigating Unfamiliar Territory
Vijay Sagar Vinnakota The traditional broadcast model - where TV networks play content on a linear schedule, and viewers tune in on their TV sets - is under siege. Linear TV is not going away anytime soon, but the model is becoming less and less relevant. Thanks to the rise of OTT services, viewers have become accustomed to watching content when and where they want, on just about any device with an internet connection. For that reason, broadcasters must add an OTT component to their offerings.

Challenges for MAM with varying production types
Jonathan Aroesty Many media asset management platforms are designed to handle the immense number of assets needed for today's fast-moving, content-heavy productions. Since every production is unique, each has its own set of asset management requirements and workflow needs. While the unique workflows vary, a common necessity for an easy-to-use interface with the ability to efficiently organize and manage large amounts of content is required, regardless of the type of production you are working on.

IBC - how was it you
Duncan Payne IBC 2016 was very much a launching show, with more new products and updates than in many recent IBC's or NAB's. With so many of these announcements directly in the remit of a cameraman, blink and you'd miss the next big thing in camera and lenses news. With this in mind, this review focuses on camera and lenses only.

NAB Review
Duncan Payne As I emerge from the customary post-NAB haze and try to formulate a coherent analysis of the 2016 show, perhaps the most striking realisation is that despite pacing the halls for four long days, I barely scratched the surface. The scale of the event, much like Las Vegas itself, is simply extraordinary, with over 100,000 attendees and nearly 1900 exhibitors. Right from the first morning of the show, my social media feeds have been full of reviews of amazing products and technical advancements, many of which I just didnt get time to see.  Here, however, are some highlights of the things I did manage to get to.

4k is a reality for live production
Liam Laminman

Some aspects of the broadcast industry move exceedingly quickly; new cameras are launched seemingly daily, shows are commissioned and shows are axed but the overall pace of the industry remains pretty steady. Would it shock you to hear that NHK in Japan first built its own 4K prototype camera in 2003? (At this point, it's worth clarifying that we're using the term '4K' to reference UHDTV1 (3840—2160) but '4K' seems to have shone through as the saleable name tag.) Today, just a mere 13 years later it looks like we're now ready to adopt 4K. It is now a reality within the industry and for the everyday consumer.

Smaller Cameras Result in Big Changes in Fluid Heads and Camera Support Solutions
N/A As technology progresses, videographers find themselves dealing with smaller cameras that become the flavor of the week, but are soon replaced six months later by technology that makes them even tinier. With this has come a new way of thinking of camera support solutions. Fluid heads that were originally designed to support smaller, more entry-level type camera models are many times not able to handle all of the camera peripherals, such as lenses and monitors, employed in a more professional shoot.

The evolution of vision mixers
Liam Laminman At the heart of any multi-camera production is a vision mixer or production switcher as some people call them. Its core role is the switching of different sources, primarily cameras, often VTs and sometimes incoming external sources such as remote feeds from broadcasters. Even for non-TV types, thats relatively simple enough to get your head round several different incoming video signals can be switched from one to the next. Vision mixers come into their own when you look at their secondary features of keying graphics, transitions and digital effects.

Advantages of SSD Hybrid Solutions in Post Production Environments
James McKenna There's a plan for everything in life. Think on it, scope it out, ask around and come up with a consensus, you'll be prepared when it happens. Like post production for example - you're bidding on a job that's acquiring in 6K for a UHD DPX deliverable, and you want the whole deal, edit through delivery, so you make a plan. Transcode to Pro Res HD for edit, up-convert to 6K for finishing and grading, render out to UHD DPX for delivery. Well done, it's a good plan. But wait - the colorist wants to work in DPX, and offline/online sounds like old-tech to the young producer, and he wants to run 6K raw throughout. The best laid plans are thwarted thusly. The new plan may be to rebuild the facility from scratch with fatter interconnects, new workstations and bigger, faster storage.

From newspaper to broadcaster: VG (Norway) and LiveU
Ronen Artman VG is a tabloid-format newspaper established in Oslo in 1945. Faced with the challenges that all newspapers face in the age of the video and the internet - fresh competition for readership and rapidly changing viewer expectations of what news is and how it's delivered - VG began using video online as early as 2001. Through the next decade it grew its use of video clips but there was always the desire to expand the use of live content to provide real value to readers and viewers.

Dialog-based search accelerates content discovery for anyone with a media library
Drew Lanham If you can't find it, then you can't reuse it. Those are a broadcaster's words to live by as media libraries grow at exponential rates. But the need to find and reuse media assets is not confined to large, traditional broadcasters. Organizations of all types and sizes are finding that the ability to uncover media assets quickly and use them immediately is the key to creating new and compelling programming, fulfilling programming requirements, serving their constituents, and realizing revenue streams. The question is, "How?" The answer is, "phonetic-based dialog search."

Making It Easy To Be In Two Places At Once
N/A In these economically straitened times, all broadcast facilities are seeking ways to reduce cost without compromising quality. Eye to Eye: Video Post-production
N/A Video post-production has long been one of the fastest developing subsets of the broadcast business. It was among the first to lead the shift from hardware into software, bringing huge advantages in terms of affordability and ease of use. I can still remember the high cost, heavy weight and low quality of the early analogue tape to tape video editing systems. The expression 'colour comes later' returns to mind. IBC will see the introduction of quite a lot of new video-post kit including a respectable amount designed to handle 3D content which I will start off with.

Strictly successful
N/A It has been hard not to spend most of my time thinking about the BBC recently. While it may be the very epitome of the public service broadcasting ethos, it is bizarre to watch one BBC programme unleash invective on another BBC programme, lashing people who probably buy each other coffee on a daily basis. How did John Humphreys feel going to work that Saturday morning, knowing that he was going to have to give the toughest of his tough interviews to a hapless bloke who was nonetheless his boss.

Is film a brand
N/A In 2000 George Lucas announced he wanted to make Episode 2 of the Star Wars Prequel Trilogy. It was going to be about 90% CGI so he wanted to shoot the live action sequences using video. It is said that as he had just had a very expensive divorce and needed some money which is why he embarked on making these prequels! Then there was no video cameras that were anywhere near as good as film, so he turned to Sony for help. Sony produced the HDW F900 which was the first video camera that produced film like images and shot at 24 fps. It was built around a 2/3rd inch chip. With this new type of camera Sony was keen to market it to the rest of the film industry and they badged it Cinealta.

3D for Cinema, ProAV and Events
N/A Over more than a century of motion picture presentations there have been periods when 3D has emerged, and each time interest has faded away. The latest 3D wave goes back to the advent of digital technology for cinemas. Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) was formed in 2002 and delivered its first DCI Specification in 2005, when Doremi was well ahead with the necessary technology for a DCI-compliant player. It was very soon clear that digital cinema technology could sweep aside many of the shortcomings of the film-based 3D presentations, and so open the door to a new 3D era. The digital medium is far more accurate than film could ever be. With no film weave, sparkles, scratches, frame hops or wear, digital cinema delivers, steady, clean, sharp, in-sync presentations that are as good on the 200th run as the first. This is the perfect medium to provide a comfortable and exciting viewing experience for stereoscopic 3D movies.
