Setting out your terms of business
Den Lennie Its one thing to win a client and work, but it can be a whole different thing getting paid. Setting out a simple one-page terms of agreement can protect you. Im not qualified to give legal advice so I encourage you to seek professional advice when setting up your own terms of business. In simple terms, you just need to write down clearly and concisely what you will and wont be responsible for when youre engaged with the client project.

Budgeting and controlling costs
Den Lennie This is a very important aspect of running a production, and one you have to keep a close eye on. Its very simple; you have your actual hard costs in one budget and you have what youre charging the client in another. Lets say you charge the client £450 per day for the camera package, but the rental house is only charging you £350. Having those figures in separate budgets allows you to calculate your overall gross margin for the project.

Den Lennie Increasing prices is such an important part of growing your business. If you want to invest in the latest gear then you have to be charging enough to allow for continual investment The easiest and most efficient way to achieve this is to reposition you and your business away from a cheap commodity product to a desirable and premium priced service.

Dealing with clients
Den Lennie For many clients, the prospect of commissioning a video production leaves one key consideration in their minds and that is: how much is it all going to cost? Particularly for marketing departments or smaller businesses which may only spend a nominal amount of money on advertising. Video production by its very nature involves more personnel and more costs and will likely be inherently more expensive than some graphic design work or print advertising.

Marketing is everything and everything is marketing
Den Lennie Marketing for filmmakers can be very intimidating. I think it must have something to do with being creative; we seem to be more concerned with creating content than creating new business.

Outsourcing for maximum efficiency
Den Lennie We filmmakers are very adept at wearing many hats. Producer, director, editor, cameraman, sound... it's the nature of boutique production. It can mean that you can make more money by doing more of the jobs yourself, but equally it can thin your resources out a little finely.

Creating a plan for your video business
Den Lennie Lets not beat about the bush here. If you have set up a business then the number one priority should be to make money. If you are not seriously focussed on profit then you need to take a long hard look at yourself and ask why did you decide to set up a business at all? If you only want to shoot for art or fun then you are an amateur - it's that simple.

Video Monitoring Essentials - By Den Lennie
N/A As a DP the video monitor you work with is one of the most important tools on set. I began my career in 1994 shooting television news for Reuters on Betacam SP and it was very rare that I'd get to use a monitor on location. As my career evolved I started shooting more considered pieces and used Sony 9" tube monitors all flight cased up. I shot the ITV travel show "Wish You Were Here¦?" for 2 years and we used to lug that 9" around the world with us just so we could playback the rushes in the evening.
