NAB Review
Duncan Payne As I emerge from the customary post-NAB haze and try to formulate a coherent analysis of the 2016 show, perhaps the most striking realisation is that despite pacing the halls for four long days, I barely scratched the surface. The scale of the event, much like Las Vegas itself, is simply extraordinary, with over 100,000 attendees and nearly 1900 exhibitors. Right from the first morning of the show, my social media feeds have been full of reviews of amazing products and technical advancements, many of which I just didnt get time to see.  Here, however, are some highlights of the things I did manage to get to.

Shooting the Extreme
Mel Noonan Steffan Hewitt started covering extreme sports as a cameraman and learnt to ski backwards while shooting skiers in front of him. Surprisingly he survived, and went on to design and use a lightweight pole with an early SD minicam slung at the top operated via a remote pan and tilt head from the other end. He called it Polecam.

How full is your spectrum?
Ian Muir Colour tuneable (Bi-Colour) LED based lamps are now increasingly commonplace in the world of Film and Broadcast. Their capacity to provide a choice of colour temperatures, usually in the realms of 3200K to 5600K, can be extremely useful. This is particularly beneficial when working in environments where setup time is at a premium, and a light source is required that matches the available ambient light.

The way forward for lighting control
Pat Grosswendt The majority of directors of photography (DPs) work by the motto that if anything looks lit then it has been done badly. Whether on the set or in the studio, lighting directors strive to create images that look as natural as possible. The key to achieving that beautifully lit picture is to have lighting fixtures that offer the ultimate control.

The joy of field editing
Kieron Seth#

In the world of remote working, cloud storage and instant news, the ability to edit on location at a shoot has become a pre-requisite. Only a few years ago, field editing used to be merely about the quick rough cut, the assembly of proxy files or simply the ingest of media in an edit-friendly format. These days, however, energy efficient, high performance processors allow for the complete post production process on a laptop. Now, programme turnaround times can be slashed with editorial decisions made on the spot.

A new era in slow-motion?
N/A Those readers who watch sports programmes on a regular basis may have noticed that many productions now have high speed cameras providing so called ultra-motion replays as a part of slow motion sequences. These cameras have been in use for many years in such areas as crash testing and sports training, but until recently the quality of the image has not been high enough for inclusion in mainstream broadcasting.

The SxS vs MxT Debate
N/A We are all probably already tired of hearing the phrase cutting costs but the reality is that ways have to be continuously found to reduce our production costs in order to stay competitive. The question is are some savings a false economy or are they really worth it?
