Cloud integration: The only way is up
In 2017 we saw the introduction of SMPTE 2110 and since then, the transition to IP has emerged as a priority for broadcasters looking to streamline their operations, decrease their footprint and effectively integrate with an industry in a rapid state of flux. A 2020 survey by Devoncroft found that almost 20% of broadcasters had already deployed SMPTE 2110, and over 25% were planning to do so. Then came the pandemic, precipitating the need for on-the-fly collaboration and accelerating the transition to remote, virtual and cloud production. |

IBC 2019 Question Time
The media and entertainment industry is in an exciting period of transformation and innovation, and Signiant is thrilled to be in the midst of it. Nowhere was this energy more apparent than at this year’s IBC conference, where we had the opportunity to speak with a wide range of organizations, vendors, and thought leaders to better understand where M&E businesses are at, where they’re going, and what they need.
Now with IBC 2019 in the rearview mirror, we’ve been reflecting on everything we’ve learned, and Jon Finegold, Signiant’s CMO, has taken the time to share his experience from the conference, and how that might affect Signiant as we charge toward 2020.

They’re the envy of their friends as they watch live concerts of their favourite bands. They gather the family around and catch up on their must-see shows. They don’t have a bad word to say about you. |

What is Next for Broadcast
The Broadcast industry is always chasing new technology. Some of that technology is further than it appears to be, and some of it is closer to adoption than it seems. In part, early adopted technology is accelerated because of customer or business demands, and in the case of IP based environments, the driving factors are speed, cost reduction, and flexibility of workflow. To counterbalance these efficiency-based factors is a desire by content creators and customers to see more 4K HDR content on their new big screens. In some ways the push to deliver 4K workflows also makes the need to manage cost/performance even more urgent. |

The dangers of live streaming without a license
The entertainment industry is visual and sound driven. Without these two elements there would be no such a thing as entertainment. Its obvious that there are people who create sound/s and visuals. Copyright laws were created to protect the industry and these artists. Many organisations have been created to look after musician, writers, poets and filmmakers. For example there are a number of bodies especially the MCPS [Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society], which is responsible for collecting royalties and licensing of music on behalf of musicians and music producers.

Modernizing the Cutting Edge
Over the last decade, streaming as a medium has seen tremendous growth. Services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video are no longer just post-hoc distributors of broadcast television content, they have become content creators and are producing some of the most well received "television" content of the past few years. |

Streaming and the need for continued innovation
In a fast-changing world, audio producers need to adapt quickly in order to keep up.
Media consumption is changing - fast. Almost without anyone noticing, we have passed the tipping point. Only a few years ago we were discussing streaming as an emerging technology; yet now, according to a recent Deloitte survey, streaming has overtaken live TV as the preferred viewing method in the U.S. YouTube viewing figures continue to surge. |

Social streaming and broadcast
We are witnessing a growing trend from broadcasters looking to complement TV content with social streaming. When done well, it can really help increase consumer engagement on a huge scale and we have seen some great examples of it over recent months. At the recent Kit Plus Show, I talked about the marriage between broadcast and social streaming, what works, and what some of our customers have been doing in this arena. |

Yonsei Church Preaches to the Masses
Yonsei Central Baptist Church in Seoul is a thriving church community on a massive scale. Having outgrown several previous buildings, the church purchased a 9.8 acre plot of land in order to build a church big enough to house its congregation, which amounts to hundreds of thousands of members. The church building itself covers 427,000 square feet. The site also houses an Education Center, which is serving the community with Christian education, as well as 214,000 square foot of World Vision Center, with seven floors, a basement and parking for up to 300 vehicles.

The changing face of streaming
I have been in the streaming business for more than 20 years and I've witnessed a number of major shifts in the industry. Currently we are experiencing such a shift as we see a massive increase in users viewing content but also a sea change in how it's being discovered and viewed. Over the last few years there has been a continual rise in the use of online video, with Cisco predicting 82% of all Internet traffic will be video by 2020 . By 2020 there will be nearly a million minutes of video content being delivered every second. The sheer volume of video makes it more important to understand how to ensure your content reaches its audience. |

TV Futures - Streaming
Hello I'm Danielle Wiltshire and I am currently in my final year at the University of Portsmouth studying on the specialist course BSc Television and Broadcasting.
One of the things I love about my course is that the academics involved are always striving to be ahead of the curve with teaching, and they care greatly about what aspects of industry practice need to be in the curriculum. For example, IP is now regarded as one of the serious futures of broadcasting, I got the opportunity to set-up a proper outside broadcast as part of my final year project. |

Audio Streaming with Larry Jordan
If you are thinking about creating your own streaming video podcast or channel, a great place to start is with a live audio podcast because, as you'll discover, the challenges are not in the technology but in the workflow. It is far easier to create an audio show than video. If you plan to expand into video, you can still stream the audio portion of the show. |

Streaming graduation
Graduation is a big deal for students, families and for the degree awarding institutions, and so it has been this way in Portsmouth since 1995. Now twenty years later it should come as no surprise that the University of Portsmouth has elevated the Graduation Ceremony Broadcasting Operation into something so organised that it runs like a refined and well oiled Swiss watch. |

How we got live streaming to work for us
We originate three hours of live programming from our studios every week. In fact, everything we do is designed for live web streaming. For the last several months, we have been exploring a number of options that would enable live video streaming with live audio mixing and support an unlimited number of audio and video sources with a scalable architecture so that as our audience grows our stream will grow to support them. |

4k Streaming: a Key OTT Differentiator
OTT streaming providers are amongst the first to offer 4K UHD TV services. In fact, 4K UHD may be seen as a key differentiator for OTT services such as Netflix and M-GO as they compete with pay TV operators according to a recent report from ABI Research. Netflix has launched 4K video streaming of shows such as House of Cards and Breaking Bad. YouTube now also supports 4K playback resolutions, while 4K UHD video players are becoming available for PCs. The control and ownership of flexible software players differentiates this market's ability to roll out new technologies more quickly. OTT is evolving to include live 4K services, although the bulk of 4K content is currently only available on demand. |

4K Streaming and the Future of 8K
There is little doubt that 4K and Ultra HD video will take hold over the next three years. These higher-resolution video types are a genuine advance from traditional HD and they likely will progress more quickly than their HD predecessor given the solid digital foundation now in place and advances such as high-efficiency video coding (HEVC/H.265).
