Artificial Intelligence and Economics
Dick Hobbs - new It’s May, so it seems inevitable that this month’s column should be a bit of a reflection on NAB. And it will, in due course. But first, some news which I think is interesting. Cisco, the IT giant, is selling off its video software solutions business. It is being bought by an as-yet unnamed new company, backed by venture capitalist Permira Funds.

Dick finds the truth out there
Dick Hobbs. The Oxford English Dictionary has determined that its word of the year for 2016 was "post-truth". We'll skip over the fact that it is, clearly, two words.

TV Futures - Streaming
Danielle Wiltshire Hello I'm Danielle Wiltshire and I am currently in my final year at the University of Portsmouth studying on the specialist course BSc Television and Broadcasting. One of the things I love about my course is that the academics involved are always striving to be ahead of the curve with teaching, and they care greatly about what aspects of industry practice need to be in the curriculum. For example, IP is now regarded as one of the serious futures of broadcasting, I got the opportunity to set-up a proper outside broadcast as part of my final year project.

Every election counts
Charlie Watts Let me set the scene. In September 2014 we were contacted by ITV Meridian News and asked if we would be interested in helping film declarations from the Hampshire and Sussex constituencies. It was just before the start of the new academic year, and we figured, sure, that's months away, why not! And so begun the slow build up to what we believe was a U.K first, with Meridian arranging to work with HE institutions in the South of the country to gather a wider and more comprehensive recording of election counts.

From newspaper to broadcaster: VG (Norway) and LiveU
Ronen Artman VG is a tabloid-format newspaper established in Oslo in 1945. Faced with the challenges that all newspapers face in the age of the video and the internet - fresh competition for readership and rapidly changing viewer expectations of what news is and how it's delivered - VG began using video online as early as 2001. Through the next decade it grew its use of video clips but there was always the desire to expand the use of live content to provide real value to readers and viewers.

#TVFUTURES
Dylan Ellcome The end of my third year of BSc Television and Broadcasting at the University of Portsmouth is drawing closer, meaning the end of my time at University. Several deadlines have come and gone, and my CCI management of Script Editing has slowed down. But I still can't comprehend this ending, as there is still much to do with several big deadlines left including my Documentary. But looming above it all is as always has been my Final year project.

Now that is how you do a newsroom
Neil Hutchins# "That's TV" is a brand new TV network for the UK that first launched in the South of England in the fourth quarter of 2014. That's TV is designed to emulate the most popular local TV news format in the US and bring it to the UK in the form of live sports, phone-ins and entertainment. Every That's TV affiliate provides its own local programmes for the area in which it operates, and the That's TV Network has already been awarded exclusive licences to operate local TV in Oxford, the Solent, Basingstoke, Reading, Guildford and Salisbury, which together comprise one of the most demographically desirable regions for local programming and associated advertising in the UK.

Strictly successful
N/A It has been hard not to spend most of my time thinking about the BBC recently. While it may be the very epitome of the public service broadcasting ethos, it is bizarre to watch one BBC programme unleash invective on another BBC programme, lashing people who probably buy each other coffee on a daily basis. How did John Humphreys feel going to work that Saturday morning, knowing that he was going to have to give the toughest of his tough interviews to a hapless bloke who was nonetheless his boss.

N/A In mid-May the EBU and SMPTE brought together many of the great and the good of the television industry and me to a forum on emerging media technologies. Held in Geneva, in a hotel expensive even by Swiss standards, it was supposed to set the agenda for the future, to share solutions so the future will be bright.

LIGHTS, CAMERA, PROMPTING
N/A Prompting equipment may seem to be one of the most standard, reliable and commonplace pieces of a workflow but that doesnt mean provision should be treated with complacency. Thinking ahead and selecting best of breed is as applicable in this case as it is for a supposedly more mission-critical asset management, newsroom or production system.

Aston ON
N/A With over 30 years on the market, Aston is one of the most established brands in the business and has been the gold standard in character generation in the United Kingdom for many years to the extent that to this day Aston on and Aston off have become generic terms used by television staff regardless of the brand of CG driving their graphics.
