Dick Hobbs - new It’s May, so it seems inevitable that this month’s column should be a bit of a reflection on NAB. And it will, in due course. But first, some news which I think is interesting. Cisco, the IT giant, is selling off its video software solutions business. It is being bought by an as-yet unnamed new company, backed by venture capitalist Permira Funds.

The IP revolution in television is only the beginning
Simen Frostad The fundamental change brought about by the delivery of video content via IP is perhaps the most significant development in the history of televised entertainment because it allows the viewer for the first time to shape the viewing experience. Time, in the sense of the linear delivery of channels, is dissolved, and possibly the concept of channels themselves will also dissolve. Viewers can store, cache and play back video when they want, and experience it at various grades of quality. In a sense the viewer can also be the curator of the service at the point of delivery.

Strictly successful
N/A It has been hard not to spend most of my time thinking about the BBC recently. While it may be the very epitome of the public service broadcasting ethos, it is bizarre to watch one BBC programme unleash invective on another BBC programme, lashing people who probably buy each other coffee on a daily basis. How did John Humphreys feel going to work that Saturday morning, knowing that he was going to have to give the toughest of his tough interviews to a hapless bloke who was nonetheless his boss.

Ubiquitous Cloud at IBC
Bob Pank# It was one of those IBCs that was more consolidation than innovation. There wasnt any one product or technology that stood out as a game changer. There was more evidence of 4K being pushed as a more realistic alternative to 8K and more of the must-have 84-inch 4K TV screens.

X 10 or X 3? - That is the question
N/A For many years now, the sports programme producer has benefited from a triple speed (75fps) super motion replay facility. Initially replayed via specially modified BVW tape decks but once the industry standard EVS server acquired the ability to record the three phases of such cameras and supply a continual record instant replay facility tapes disappeared.

Ask the experts......Intercoms for outside broadcasts
N/A The first big point is that an outside broadcast is not just a control room on wheels. It is an event. And that means communications beyond the truck.

A new era in slow-motion?
N/A Those readers who watch sports programmes on a regular basis may have noticed that many productions now have high speed cameras providing so called ultra-motion replays as a part of slow motion sequences. These cameras have been in use for many years in such areas as crash testing and sports training, but until recently the quality of the image has not been high enough for inclusion in mainstream broadcasting.

BVE 2011 retrospect
N/A BVE 2011 had much of the buoyancy and buzz of an IBC. The organisers claimed an attendance of over 15,500 visitors and 240 exhibiting companies. Many of the UK-based stalwarts who make the annual pilgrimage to Amsterdam could be seen exploring the show, confirming that BVE is now taken seriously by mainstream broadcasters.

Game, Set and Media Management
N/A A week into Wimbledon and my chances of getting there this year seemed to be dwindling fast. A late call on Friday afternoon though from Timeline TV rekindled my hopes of not only seeing a bit of tennis but getting an exclusive tour around the Wimbledon Broadcast Centre.

Behind the scenes at Big Brother 9
N/A Working 94 days with no day off is a hard task. Its even harder for the TV equipment that has to keep going round the clock, every day, to keep all the viewing addicts supplied with live footage and highlight editions.
