Is now the time to compromise on investment
Mike Ransome - new It would seem on the face of it that many broadcasters and production companies are trimming spending to the bone, or at least postponing it in anticipation of more lucrative days to come.

NAB Review
Duncan Payne As I emerge from the customary post-NAB haze and try to formulate a coherent analysis of the 2016 show, perhaps the most striking realisation is that despite pacing the halls for four long days, I barely scratched the surface. The scale of the event, much like Las Vegas itself, is simply extraordinary, with over 100,000 attendees and nearly 1900 exhibitors. Right from the first morning of the show, my social media feeds have been full of reviews of amazing products and technical advancements, many of which I just didnt get time to see.  Here, however, are some highlights of the things I did manage to get to.

In media monitoring, as in medicine, a quick fix is not a cure
Simen Frostad A man is rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack. The priorities of the medical team that treats him are clear: keep the patient alive, contain the damage to the heart as far as possible, stabilise the situation until the patient is out of danger. They work under the pressure of these immediate priorities, and with little or no information about the patients medical history to date.

A stitch in time
Thomas Dove "A stitch in time saves nine" is an old saying: essentially it is saying fix a small problem now and it will save fixing a much bigger problem later. This applies in many areas - including broadcast. Kicking the error can down the road costs a lot more to fix the problem, particularly for audio and video files - but it doesn't have to.

Take control with Helm
N/A Control and monitoring are two of the biggest issues faced in playout operations. Broadcasters and playout providers want to be able to select precisely the equipment that they need and probably more so than ever, are now able to very accurately do that. But this, combined with the fact that previously largely static devices are now empowered by the introduction of IT thinking glue technologies being a prime example creates an issue.

Pushing remote broadcast boundaries
N/A Film and TV coverage as varied as the London 2012 Olympics and the BBCs Springwatch are raising the bar where viewer expectations are concerned. Bradley Engineering (BradEng) is a remote camera technology pioneer that has been at the forefront of meeting these expectations. TV Bay spoke to Bradley Engineering founder, David Bradley, about the latest additions to the companys portfolio and how they respond to remote camera technology trends. We go that extra mile, he explained. For instance, upgrading the camera but keeping the existing, durable housing means we can support our longstanding customers with up-to-date kit they know will last and last regardless of what they throw at it. Most recently weve been proud that our cameras have been used for coverage of Springwatch, the Queens Jubilee, the Olympic torch relay and the Games themselves.

3D Diaries Part 2 Cameras and rigs
Bob Pank# The idea of S-3D is not hard to grasp: one image for each eyeball. But making it work well enough to maintain the 3D illusion for the viewer is far from simple or straightforward. The fun starts with acquisition that breaks into two types of operation; live (no post production) and not live (with post).
