Trade shows and their role in the wired world
Historically trade shows afforded an opportunity to collect the latest brochures relevant to the visitor's chosen industry or career path. Today there seems little reason to store data of any kind, let alone paper brochures, when information is so easily accessible online. Brochure back-packing at exhibitions has become a rare sight, rarer still since the security clampdown on visitor luggage at exhibitions. Today's efficient show delegate need only carry a mobile phone and, in deference to tradition, a bundle of business cards. The phone doubles as a snapshot camera, video camera, dictaphone, email reader, internet browser, Skype communicator, and so on. |

In out in out shake it all about
It is said that, in polite company, one should never discuss politics, religion, sex or money. Well, dear reader, assuming we are in polite company (and Im sure we are), I am going to break two of those taboos right now. But dont worry I wont be discussing my bedroom antics or evolution versus creation. Not today anyway. |

Cloud Editing at BVE
As Media Partners at BVE 2015 KitPlus was responsible for recording, editing and publishing 50+ hours of video content from the event seminars, roaming reporters and studio discussions over the course of the show. With material coming from different sources, crew and post-production staff consisting largely of students with varying levels of proficiency and tight timelines thrown into the mix we needed a post-production solution that was quick to set up, easy to learn and provided a creative and reliable solution. After chatting with Forbidden Technologies for a while we decided to use their Forscene platform. |

The show attracted a high quality and diverse audience from across the broadening content creation industry seeing over 15,000* key industry decision makers including leading indies, post houses, DOPs, broadcasters and brands attend in full force, with many hailing it the best show yet. |

Bob Pank starts counting cores...
Once again BVE hosted its one-day Cloud seminar. The new ExCel location meant that the room was away from the show floor and ideal for concentrating on the words flowing from the experts. Full-on attention was needed as squeezing in nine sessions between 10.00 and 17.45 meant that each would be short, sharp and to the point, which was certainly the case for the two I attended. |

Business travel
Talking to people in the broadcast industry, it is clear that travelling to shows, exhibitions or to visiting customers and suppliers is still part and parcel of the trade we are in. As the saying goes, people buy from people. |

My first BVE
This was my first BVE, and the last one that would be at Earls Court. It had a very different atmosphere to the rest of the shows I've been to. It was very friendly and a lot more relaxed. I guess for a lot of people, this is their home show, which helps. Also, it was all in one hall, which made navigating a lot easier! It also meant that our cameraman, Callum (we traded in Simon for a newer model), could have the camera on a dolly for the majority of the videos. |

BVE in the video on-demand era
Within the last ten years, on-demand culture has changed the way that the world accesses media. From Prime Ministers Questions on Wednesday afternoons to Champions League highlights on a Tuesday evening, there is no longer any excuse to miss anything that we would otherwise tune into live. The same now goes for exhibitions, as not only is it hard enough to secure days off from the working calendar, it can often become impossible to get to every stand, hear every speaker and get to grips with each industry trend. |

Applying the milkshake theory
In last months column I sounded off at a few of the crackpot ideas going around at the moment, like connected television. The point, if there was one, was that we seem to be overloaded at the moment with new technologies that exist solely for one of two reasons: that a bunch of engineers found they could do it, and/or a big manufacturer thought they could put a new logo on a product and bump the price up. |

BVE and the Year Ahead
In the IABM's market survey a year ago, the Director General, Peter White, forecast: Although the worst appears to be over and a degree of optimism is discernible, 2010 is still shaping up to be a fairly lacklustre year. As we exit the year, however, we do expect to see better signs of market improvement with a more promising 2011 and 2012. How prescient. Packed aisles at February's Broadcast Video Expo seemed to show all the signs of a real upturn in the industry. |
