Leveraging licensed broadcast spectrum assets
John Payne There are several different approaches to transmitting live and file-based content from the field to the studio. Traditional microwave Electronic News Gathering (ENG) provides high bandwidth, high-quality transmission with low latency. Using the secure, dedicated BAS spectrum keeps control in a broadcasters hands. The past few years have seen a shift in video technology toward acceptance, and adoption of IP-based links into ENG workflows.

VR and 3D Audio - Ask The Experts
Pieter Schillebeeckx What's the difference between 2D & 3D audio? There are two parts to this question when it comes to audio for VR. The key difference is that 2D is a single horizontal slice,so when we're thinking 5.1 or traditional surround sound in a cinema that would be looked at as 2D,whereas 3D adds height information to this both above and below you. The second part to this question relates to static versus dynamic audio, and this goes for both 2D and 3D audio.

How HEVC technology is revolutionizing field-based broadcasting
Eli Garten High-Efficiency Video Encoding (HEVC), also known as H.265, is the subsequent generation of H.264 and tapped to be the next widely adopted standard for video compression. As with any MPEG evolution, the new standards goal is to make compression more efficient and allow for reducing OPEX and CAPEX in various video delivery applications. With the introduction of the last major compression innovation, H.264, video applications experienced roughly half the data rates of the predecessor MPEG-2. With HEVC, the industry is predicting a similar ambitious result: achieving half the data rates of H.264. In only its first generation of development, HEVC is already providing data efficiencies of up to 40-percent while retaining the same image quality. As the codec continues to evolve and the broadcast market approaches more widespread adoption of 4K resolutions, there will be a strong push to achieve the 50-percent efficiency mark.

File-based QC systems for small and mid-sized media organisations
Vikas Singhal Challenges and benefits: Companies across the media value chain have departed the tape-based realm and migrated to file-based workflows. In making this transition, they left behind common, well-established technologies that had ensured the smooth flow of content from creation through to delivery.

Ask the experts: Content readiness in time-deferred workflows
Sudeep Bose When focusing on the actual content itself, rather than the service, network or other components, the key is the readiness of content to be used. For instance, a piece of media must be syntactically correct in order to ensure that it causes no downstream issues in the workflow and that it will play and decode properly.

Exceptional loudness control does not have to break the bank
Oliver Masciarotte The industry is buzzing about loudness control. EBU R128 and other such legislation around the world attempts to provide some level of consistency in perceived loudness between a program and its interstitials, hence the concept of loudness control.

The evolving art of sports television
N/A Given the choice of watching a major live event on site or via television, most people would opt for the real thing. Sure, you have to get to the venue, perhaps queue to buy a ticket, find your seat or maybe stand for hours. If it is a football match, the audience in front will probably stand up for a better view of each goal, completely blocking your view. But you are there and you feel part of it.

Managing Media
N/A Looking after the media for a television production used to be a relatively simple task. The footage would be shot and captured on tape. The tapes would be delivered to the post-production facility for editing. They would be ingested into the edit system, the editor would construct the final program and it would be recorded back to tape. All the tapes would then go back to the production company and the job was finished. I know this is a gross simplification, but the point was that the media started on and ended up on physical tapes; you knew how many there were and where they were because they were sitting on the shelf. You could log them, bar code them, dupe them, put them in a safe, leave them in a taxi, but there was no doubt about it; that was where the programme and all its footage was; on the tapes.

Back to Basics with Stereo 3D
N/A The demand for compelling content to meet the need is growing, and of course, stereo 3D work comes with challenges. Like everything else in production and post, creating good 3D is part art, part science. Going back to the basics of the science can inform artistic and equipment decisions and keep 3D headaches at bay.

So what is Digital Television - Part 1
N/A It is tempting to think of digital television as something very scientific and even complex. But when we view the end result, we find something very familiar; something television engineers have sought since the very beginning¦an experience that just keeps getting better and better¦quality video and audio conveying great entertainment, sport, movies, and news to the viewing audience. The only thing new in digital television is the way the message gets from here to there.

Pushing Air- the art of acoustic design
N/A Acoustics is usually regarded (or often disregarded) as a black art that is practiced with no discernable science involved, with a great reliance on ears for measurement and blind faith as a method statement.
