ATG Danmon Equips and Integrates 4K-Capable Video Production and Live Streaming Facility for the Venue Group

ATG Danmon announces the completion of a 4K television production and live streaming facility at the Lafayette London events centre. Commissioned by the Venue Group, the new system allows for live relay of stage performances as well as studio-style recording. It includes robotic cameras, an audio/video production control room and a floor-to-ceiling rack of auxiliary equipment.

"ATG Danmon was recommended to us by Universal Music Group which occupies most of the building," comments Chris Pollard, Lafayette's Head of Production. "A crucial challenge was how to accommodate a complete control room in the limited amount of space available above and behind the stage. Another was the need to minimise any obstruction of stage performances when viewed from the 600 capacity auditorium. ATG came up with a versatile and future-proof solution which enables the operators to capture full broadcast quality 4K video from multiple positions, including the ability to zoom in from wide angle to very tight close-up. The system allows us to stream live productions with or without a studio audience."

Slovakian Broadcaster Arena Sport Invests in Multiformat Servers from PlayBox Neo Posted: 27/10/2020
Slovakian Broadcaster Arena Sport Invests in Multiformat Servers from PlayBox Neo

Televízia Arena Sport has chosen multiformat servers from PlayBox Neo. These will power an expansion to the channel branding and playout facilities at the broadcaster's production and transmission headquarters in Nitra, Slovakia. Three new sports channels will each be assigned an AirBox Neo Channel-in-a-Box system, delivering 1080i/50 high-definition with simultaneous internal transcoding to 625-line SD. The project was negotiated and supervised by Bratlislava-based systems integrator Centron Slovakia sro.

"We have always found PlayBox Neo servers efficient and highly reliable so they were the logical choice for this expansion," comments TV Arena Sport's Chief Technology Officer Lukas Gregus. "They allow our operators to handle the entire task of graphics integration, text preparation, scheduling and actual playout from a single workstation and within a single user interface. If a major news story demands fast attention, PlayBox Neo can accommodate that quickly and easily."

"The AirBox Neo CIAB approach also makes extra channels very easy to add because each server functions as a standalone module," details Centron Slovakia Managing Director Radoslav Bako. "PlayBox Neo produces a wide range of software elements which can be selected and combined as part of the initial configuration."

Quality Media Relies on Dejero for Connectivity during Remote Production of TV3 and rsquo;s Spectacular Live Coverage of 2020 Piromusical in Barcelona Posted: 28/10/2020
Quality Media Relies on Dejero for Connectivity during Remote Production of TV3 and rsquo;s Spectacular Live Coverage of 2020 Piromusical in Barcelona

Dejero EnGo mobile transmitters were at the heart of Spanish production company Quality Media’s delivery of perfectly synchronised live video feeds from this year’s Piromusical de la Mercè fireworks, watched by 600,000 of TV3’s (Televisió De Catalunya) television viewers.

Due to the EnGo transmitters’ Smart Blending Technology, which intelligently combines multiple network connections in real-time for enhanced reliability, expanded coverage, and greater bandwidth capacity, Quality Media were not restricted to setting up in locations that had fiber lines already installed or have to rely on satellite for connectivity; instead they were able to deliver live broadcast-quality coverage of the fireworks display from prime spots with the best possible views relying only on cellular connectivity. Two cameras with EnGo transmitters were positioned to cover each location; Sants Montjuïc, Las Cortes, Nou Barris and Sant Martí, delivering a total of eight feeds.

“The main challenge of this event was that the sites best suited to the production of this show were streets, parks or beaches that had no fibre connection and no electricity. It was a high pressure situation as this was a prime time show for TV3 where nothing could fail in the middle of the live transmission,” said Pablo Reyes, chief production officer at Quality Media.

A stunning display that rounds off Barcelona’s biggest annual festival, La Mercè, the Piromusical was reinvented in 2020 in line with sanitary and social distancing requirements linked to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. In a bid to avoid crowds travelling and gathering for the show, the fireworks display was brought to people’s screens from eight secret locations across Barcelona, which allowed everyone to see the show by both tuning into TV3 and by watching from their balcony or rooftop. It was accompanied by a carefully selected soundtrack of songs from the 1940s, 50s and 60s in tribute to those most vulnerable to the ongoing pandemic.

“Capturing fireworks is very tricky. If they don’t look good on-screen you don’t get a second chance,” continued Reyes. “We were particularly happy with the EnGo transmitter’s intercom feature that provides two-way, full-duplex voice communication between the studio and field, as well as the synchronisation capabilities of the mobile transmitter, which is crucial for split-screen shots showing the same fireworks from four different positions. It allowed the director of this program to deliver a beautifully artistic show with the ability to choose between eight perfectly synchronised feeds.”

The Dejero EnGo is the world’s most durable and versatile mobile transmitter that’s purpose-built for reliably sending high-quality live video from remote locations. It allows the transmission with glass-to-glass latency as low as 0.8 seconds.

“In cases like this, you have to be very sure your technology will work on the day and can deliver the highest quality video to the viewers. Dejero allowed us to go into battle with the solid belief that transmission and connectivity would perform how it should. It was daunting but we wanted to show our client TV3, as well as the market, that this is entirely possible,” added Reyes.

“Thanks to our remote production abilities during the Piromusical, Quality Media has been granted as an official technology provider of TV3, after winning a highly competitive tender of which we are very proud. Thanks to partners like Dejero, we are continuing to revolutionise remote production in Spain.”

Custom Consoles MediaWall Goes Live at BBC Studioworks

Custom Consoles announces the completion of a 5 metres wide by 3 metres high MediaWall for BBC Studioworks in Elstree, Hertfordshire. The new structure is installed in the production control gallery used for the supervision of programmes from the George Lucas Stage.

BBC Studioworks operates a complete gallery suite assigned to the George Lucas Stages at Elstree Studios, supporting large-scale TV productions. The galleries have direct access to Stages 1 and 2 and have hosted shows such as Strictly Come Dancing, The Voice, and A League of Their Own. George Lucas used Stages 1 and 2 during the filming of the 'Star Wars' trilogy. Fully soundproofed, the stage is 1,465 square metres in area and 15 metres high.

Located in front of the production control desk, the MediaWall spans almost the full width of the gallery's front wall and supports 44 video monitors plus their associated under-monitor displays. A studio clock display and speakers are also attached. Four storage cabinets are positioned at floor level, accommodating power and signal distribution equipment.

"Introduced in 2006, MediaWall continues to be in strong demand among broadcasters, production studios and playout service providers around the world," comments Custom Consoles Sales Manager Gary Fuller. "

How to engage students with live projects
Martin Andrews For many employers, how and what we teach at university is sometimes considered to be very mysterious. The responsibility for creating the structure and content within the curriculum is the responsibility of academics. In my experience, the best method for making sure that students and staff are kept up to date with current working practices is to regularly engage with ‘Live’ projects and ‘Real’ clients.

TVFutures My Dive in to Learning
Lucy Crow In 2014 I had my first taste of underwater diving. I was on a family holiday and I happened across the experience of a lifetime. Within the first few minutes of that adventure I had decided that I wanted to be part of the diving world going forward. After countless dives and extensive training to become a scuba diving instructor, I made the decision to attend university. I knew that whatever I was going to study, I wanted it to involve my passion for Scuba.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Control, as easy as pressing a button
Bazile Peter

A fundamental issue with control surfaces in modern broadcast operations is that they are, for the most part, old fashioned.

The ease, responsiveness, and functionality of touchscreens, especially in Smartphones are now commonplace. Attributes that are largely absent from touchscreens are typically buttons, sliders, and dials found on many control devices associated with human machine interaction.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.
