Ikegami Reports Accelerating Demand for IP-Interfaced UHD HDR Broadcast Production at IBC 2022 Posted: 06/10/2022
Ikegami Reports Accelerating Demand for IP-Interfaced UHD HDR Broadcast Production at IBC 2022

Ikegami Electronics (Europe) reports a successful IBC 2022, held at the Amsterdam RAI exhibition centre early mid September.

“Back in 2019, HD-HDR was the mostly widely preferred mastering format for broadcast TV production,” says Michael Laetzsch, Ikegami Europe's Broadcast & Professional Video Division Manager. “This is gradually being superseded by UHD-HDR which offers four times the image resolution, allowing production companies to maximise the commercial life of new content.”

Making its first IBC show appearance, Ikegami’s UHK-X700 is a robustly built UHD HDR HFR camera which can be pedestal mounted for studio-floor operation, tripod-mounted for outside-broadcast production or shoulder mounted to allow maximum mobility.

Ikegami also debuted its UHK-X750 studio camera which offers all the UHK-X700's advanced features plus a lower centre-of-gravity and easier staging as well as greater emphasis on ease of service and cool operation.

The Future of Broadcast Technology
Sebastian Richter

Spotlight on Sebastian Richter, Vice President Media Systems at Rohde & Schwarz.

We are currently in the middle of a transition phase with migration to several new technologies, from the move to IP-based infrastructure and the shift from linear to video-on-demand (VOD).
The question for all of us is how long that transition phase will last; it is going to be faster for some customers then for others – national broadcasters, for example – it will be a slower process.

James Gilbert

Over the next eight years we are going to be in transition, and within that there will be vastly different rates of change among content owners and media organisations. As a technology provider the onus is on us to be flexible and adaptable to meet this wide range of requirements from our customers.

The Future of Broadcast Technology
Manfred Reitmeier

Now that OTT and VOD have become more mainstream, many commentators talk about traditional broadcast methods, like terrestrial transmission, being a thing of the past. With so many new platforms and non-traditional content services carving out a growing slice of the market, you can be forgiven for thinking that linear over-the-air television is on its way out. The reality is that the industry must strike a balance between meeting consumers’ shifting habits and the business and operational needs of content providers.

A switch in time: how KVM can unlock the future of broadcasting
Chris Smeeton

One of the major changes for broadcasters during the pandemic has been the shift towards remote production; by no means a new phenomenon in an IP environment, yet accelerated under lockdown to accommodate travel and gathering restrictions. A 2021 report found that almost 40% of broadcast professionals now employ remote production, up 9% on the previous year.

Cloud integration: The only way is up
Francois Vaillant

In 2017 we saw the introduction of SMPTE 2110 and since then, the transition to IP has emerged as a priority for broadcasters looking to streamline their operations, decrease their footprint and effectively integrate with an industry in a rapid state of flux. A 2020 survey by Devoncroft found that almost 20% of broadcasters had already deployed SMPTE 2110, and over 25% were planning to do so. Then came the pandemic, precipitating the need for on-the-fly collaboration and accelerating the transition to remote, virtual and cloud production.

The Cloud - a measured approach

With the buzz of ‘cloud’ everywhere in our industry it would be natural to think that cloud is the only game in town. Isn’t it time to step back and consider very carefully how, or whether, you make that journey to the cloud?

Meeting the specification
Chris Smeeton

A good technical specification will detail precisely what is required, from the equipment to the cables connecting it. Many specifications will give  particular manufacturers and model numbers. On many occasions, this makes tendering simple and gives vendors a secure and fair way to bid.
