At the 2016 NAB Show, Digital Alert Systems, Dolby(R), GatesAir, Harmonic, LG Electronics, Triveni Digital, and Zenith are teaming up to demonstrate live end-to-end ATSC 3.0 workflows for a range of the broadcast capabilities such as 4K and high dynamic range (HDR). Multiple programs of live and prerecorded streams will be displayed in 4K resolution with HDR, delivered at a frame rate of 60 fps along with next-generation audio. The demonstrations will be the first time that broadcasters can observe eight of the nine core ATSC 3.0 technologies being standardized to provide advanced electronic programming/service guides (EPG/ESG), intelligent HDR to standard dynamic range (SDR) conversion for legacy DTV, and other new services and media types supported by the next-generation broadcast television system.

LG Electronics (LG) today unveils plans to launch its full 3D portfolio from May to meet increasing interest in 3D across the nation. LG have been the first in the UK to introduce its passive 3D technology LCD TV (LD920) which is being rolled out in pubs across the UK and Ireland. Viewers will be able to watch live football including Premier League matches broadcast by Sky in 3D, prior to the introduction of Sky 3D to millions of homes later this year. In addition, this spring, LG will lead the way in home entertainment launching its Full LED 3D Ready TV (LX9900) and 3D Blu-ray player (BX580) for the home.
The new LG Full LED 3D Ready TV provides the ultimate in home entertainment with better picture quality and unique single layer ultra slim Infinia design, virtually eliminating the space between the screen and the bezel so they seamlessly blend together. Available in both 47in and 55in, the televisions use active 3D technology meaning all the components, that allow the picture to become 3D are housed within the glasses worn by the viewer.

Modernizing the Cutting Edge
Myles Carter - new Over the last decade, streaming as a medium has seen tremendous growth. Services like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Video are no longer just post-hoc distributors of broadcast television content, they have become content creators and are producing some of the most well received "television" content of the past few years.

Is now the time to compromise on investment
Mike Ransome - new It would seem on the face of it that many broadcasters and production companies are trimming spending to the bone, or at least postponing it in anticipation of more lucrative days to come.

Streaming and the need for continued innovation
Jon Schorah - new In a fast-changing world, audio producers need to adapt quickly in order to keep up. Media consumption is changing - fast. Almost without anyone noticing, we have passed the tipping point. Only a few years ago we were discussing streaming as an emerging technology; yet now, according to a recent Deloitte survey, streaming has overtaken live TV as the preferred viewing method in the U.S. YouTube viewing figures continue to surge.

Dick Hobbs is counting heads
Dick Hobbs. Now I am absolutely not going to get into politics in this column. But as I wrote last month, I am a bit concerned about truth and honesty. As I am sure we all are.

Heading towards brightness regulations
Bruce Devlin I like IBC in the same way that I find NAB grating. Maybe I have been living in the UK for too long, but the bright morning Amsterdam sun breaking through clouds and reflecting off the canal while fit young things on bicycles pedal to college; snapchatting with their friends and avoiding collisions with practised ease has a certain charm. You just don't see that in the after-party morning-after haze of the Las Vegas Strip in the harsh desert sunlight.

IBC - how was it you
Duncan Payne IBC 2016 was very much a launching show, with more new products and updates than in many recent IBC's or NAB's. With so many of these announcements directly in the remit of a cameraman, blink and you'd miss the next big thing in camera and lenses news. With this in mind, this review focuses on camera and lenses only.

Documentary filmmaking - Protecting the past
Charlie Watts If you wanted my opinion on what I thought was the most rewarding media making pursuit, I'd have to single out documentary filmmaking. All media making can be very demanding, and each genre has its own particular issues that make it what it is, but almost nothing is certain about documentary which is why I find it so exciting. The idea could be inspirational, but the shoot might be flawed and not yield the required depth. Perhaps the idea and the shoot go brilliantly, but in the edit the real story gets lost. The latter suggestion contains the key ingredient - story. All media making is reliant on a good story, and knowing what makes a good story is something all teachers are keen to convey.

IBC with the BBC
Jon Page IBC is an exciting opportunity for us in BBC R&D to share with the world the work we've been doing on a range of technologies. Those attending the conference will be able see much of the work we are doing on new forms of content and workflows and get an understanding of the object based principles for broadcasting which we are working towards, enabled by Internet Protocol (IP).
