KitchenFish Counts on FOR-A Video Switcher for Reliable Coverage of Daily Lottery Broadcast Posted: 27/05/2020
KitchenFish Counts on FOR-A Video Switcher and nbsp;for Reliable Coverage of Daily Lottery Broadcast and nbsp;

KitchenFish LLC, the video production company responsible for the nightly broadcast coverage of the South Carolina Education Lottery, is using a new FOR-A HVS-390HS video switcher for its productions. Located a few blocks from the state capitol, the KitchenFish studio hosts the nightly lottery drawings, and also supports live shots of state and local officials for national news outlets. The switcher was installed on April 14 and used for that evening’s production.

“We need to show all these graphics and video inserts simultaneously, and the new FORA switcher gives us a lot of flexibility,” said Jim Simmons, chief engineer for KitchenFish. “Price made a difference, but reliability is the one thing that has to be foremost, because we don’t have a second chance.

GB Labs qualifies ATTO 360 Tuning, Monitoring, and Analytics Software to achieve even faster performance Posted: 18/05/2020
GB Labs qualifies ATTO 360 Tuning, Monitoring, and Analytics Software to achieve even faster performance

The leader in intelligent storage solutions, GB Labs, has announced a development partnership with ATTO Technology, Inc., a global leader of network, storage connectivity and infrastructure solutions, and has qualified ATTO 360™ Tuning, Monitoring, and Analytics Software with GB Labs CORE.4 operating system.

A network built with ATTO FastFrame™ Ethernet adapters and ThunderLink® Thunderbolt™ adapters can be optimised to perform far better than what’s commonly expected of Ethernet networks. ATTO 360 Tuning, Monitoring, and Analytics Software helps users easily and quickly tune networks to achieve maximum performance.

GB Labs CEO-CTO Dominic Harland said, “Any storage system can only be as good as the quality of the connection it has to creative workstations or processing platforms. This is especially true of our high-end Space and FastNAS platforms, which are so powerful and intuitive that they can actually be let down by a substandard link to the workstations they are there to drive.”

FOR-A HVS-2000 Video Switcher Helps Custom Media Solutions Pivot from Live Event to Streaming Event with Limited Crew Posted: 13/05/2020
FOR-A HVS-2000 Video Switcher Helps Custom Media Solutions and nbsp;Pivot from Live Event to Streaming Event with Limited Crew and nbsp;

When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Orange Conference 2020, an annual event in Atlanta for Christian family ministry teams, to convert from a live, arena-sized event to a three-day streaming program, Custom Media Solutions relied heavily on its FOR-A HVS-2000 video switcher. The coverage required 16 inputs, 10 keyers, 11 DVEs, and at least four AUX buses.

Due to social distancing requirements, CMS had to produce the event using less than half of its usual crew in its production trailer. “We automated as much as possible using the features from the switcher,” said Marc Shroyer, president of CMS. “We had a couple of still stores with user flags and a lot of lower-thirds from the ProPresenter presentation system. We used DVEs for picture-in-picture looks that we could display on the multi-view at all times, so we could decide when to use them on the fly.”

First Baptist Jackson Upgrades to HD Live Production with FOR-A HVS-490 Production Switcher Posted: 21/04/2020
First Baptist Jackson Upgrades to HD Live Production with FOR-A HVS-490 Production Switcher

First Baptist Church of Jackson in downtown Jackson, Miss., began broadcasting its Sunday services on a local TV station in the 1950s, but had not significantly upgraded its production facilities since the 1980s. Last summer, the church made the jump to HD production and anchored its redesigned control room with a HVS490 production switcher and MFR-3000 routing switcher from FOR-A Corporation of America.

Today, First Baptist Jackson streams live 1080p video to Facebook Live, YouTube, and its own website, with local 720p replays the following Sunday on WDBD (FOX) and WLOO (MyNetworkTV) in Jackson (DMA #92). According to Michael Bowen, minister of media and communications, any new switcher had to be “super volunteer-friendly,” because the church relies on more than 50 volunteers (as well as paid staff) to run its weekly production and other projects. The new HD system went live in late August, and he said it has created renewed excitement in their volunteers.

Edgeware adds automated QoE optimization to its multi-CDN control platform StreamPilot Posted: 25/03/2020
Edgeware adds automated QoE optimization to its multi-CDN control platform StreamPilot

Edgeware has today announced the addition of its automated optimization capability to its multi-CDN control platform StreamPilot. Referred to as AutoPilot, the feature gives broadcasters and content providers the option to automatically perform actions triggered by StreamPilot’s real-time session data when using a multi-CDN set-up

StreamPilot, which was launched at IBC in September 2019, has raised significant customer interest and rendered several trial projects. Insights from these customer discussions are now channelized into the new AutoPilot capabilities.

The AutoPilot feature identifies and automatically presents a unified view of problems that could affect users’ quality of experience, independent of which CDN is delivering the TV service to the viewer. The issues presented can be related to the device, delivery CDN, ISP or the content itself. The data is processed, grouped and presented with a classification on severity level.

By giving users the unique capability to automatically – or manually – mitigate the problems through actions such as selecting another CDN for the delivery, StreamPilot meets a growing demand from broadcasters and content providers to automatically optimize delivery, rather than presenting the data for them to then analyse and act upon.

FOR-A Switchers, Routers Support 12G-SDI and nbsp;Infrastructures for 4K 8K Live Production Workflows

FOR-A Corporation of America continues to develop products that support 12G-SDI infrastructures for live production workflows. Among its offerings are the new MFR-4100 and MFR-6100 12G/6G/3G/HD/ASI routing switchers, as well as the HVS-6000 Series of HANABI video switchers, which support HD and 4K production.

“For live event production and broadcasters, 12G offers increased bandwidth for uncompressed 4K/60p/59.94p/50p video over a single SDI cable,” explained Ken Truong, President of FOR-A Corporation of America. “That single SDI cable means reduced weight and wiring for mobile production units and easier troubleshooting for engineers. FOR-A offers a number of switchers, routers, and other products to help video professionals take advantage of 12G-SDI technology.”

Built to support 12G-SDI infrastructures, the MFR-6100 provides single-cable transfer of 4K video for less complex cabling. Users can add up to 16 input and 16 output cards (nine channels per card) to configure a matrix up to 144x144 in a 13 RU frame. For smaller installations, the MFR-4100 routing switcher supports up to 72x72 I/O in a 7 RU frame.

FOR-A Corporation of America today announced CG-Portable, a compact character generator designed for broadcast and digital signage applications. Through its intuitive, browser-based GUI, CG-Portable makes it easy to produce and display lower-thirds and other graphics. FOR-A will demo CG-Portable at the 2020 NAB Show, which runs April 19-22 in Las Vegas, Nev. (Booth C5016).

About the size of a smartphone, CG-Portable features four SDI ports for easy integration with production switchers and HD displays, as well as an Ethernet port for network connectivity. Two independent, multi-lingual text overlays support horizontal crawls and vertical rolls, while a timer overlay provides up/down count. Plus, CG-Portable supports more than 70 frames of graphic playback buffer, so users can insert animated as well as static logos over programming. Also, 70 frames can be used for frame memory.

With CG software developed by Brainstorm, CG-Portable provides a simple solution for fill and key mixing over live video or graphics for PEG (public, educational, government) channels. Broadcasters can also use it for downstream logo insertion for multicast channels. Plus, CG-Portable offers its own CG mixing capability over a background input. For digital signage applications in corporate and worship environments, CG-Portable can quickly provide customized updates about room schedules, daily menu specials, weather advisories, and other notifications.

The Business Case for Hybrid TV and AI
Oliver Botti Video on demand (VOD) and OTT live services have come a long way since their introduction and, rather than solely competing with traditional broadcasting, they are becoming more important than ever in helping to keep broadcast TV networks popular, in particular when combining TV broadcasting with online TV into Hybrid TV models, thanks to convergence standards such as HbbTV and Atsc3.0. In the UK, the average weekly OTT viewing minutes shot up from 60 in July 2015 to 152 in September 2018. Meanwhile, OTT TV and video revenues are expected to reach $6.8 billion by 2023 in the UK and $61 billion in the US.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

Accurate Ad Tracking with OTT
Tim Armstrong As viewers embrace and transition to OTT, the opportunities and flexibility provided to advertisers are growing fast. However, like all technology shifts, this transition hasn’t come without challenges. Some technology used to monetise video over the years has resulted in a less-than-ideal viewing experience, with disruptive transitions and buffering two of the main issues. The good news is that advances in ad insertion technology mean content providers can now deliver a seamless OTT viewing experience, as well as addressable advertising options. This paves the way for the delivery of high-quality ad viewing while growing the advertiser's ROI.
