The Neutrality of DPA Microphones Helps Capture Pianist Helena Basilova Rich, Velvety Sound Posted: 13/01/2020
The Neutrality of DPA Microphones Helps Capture Pianist Helena Basilova and rsquo;s Rich, Velvety Sound

Producer and engineer Brendon Heinst used DPA’s 4006A omnidirectional microphones to capture the rich sound that is the hallmark of Dutch/Russian classical pianist Helena Basilova.

Fearing the microphones he already owned were too ‘bright’ for the task, Heinst switched to a 5006A Surround Kit consisting of five 4006A microphones, which are carefully factory-matched so that their already low standard tolerances are even closer – within ±0.5 dB. Heinst positioned these next to the piano in the style of a traditional Decca Tree, but with different dimensions based on a variant of the Tree that he had perfected while studying for a Masters in Audio Engineering at Utrecht School of Arts & Technology.

“My experience of using the 4006As on this recording was so good that I was pretty much sold from there,” Heinst says. “The sound is very, very transparent and neutral, yet it's surprisingly musical as well. There's a certain natural relaxedness to them compared to the microphones I was previously using, and this wasn’t only obvious to an audio engineer. Basically, every musician we've recorded since has noticed the difference between my old microphones and the DPAs, and vote in favour of the DPAs.”

Based in Utrecht, Brendon Heinst is a co-founder of TRPTK, a production company with its own recording, mixing and mastering studio and record label. Established in 2014, the company is now operated by Heinst, Maya Fridman (who is also an artist on the label) and Ben van Leliveld.

Since investing in a 5006A Surround Kit for the Helena Basilova recordings, Brendon Heinst has used it for a number of other projects including a recording of Telemann’s long-lost Fantasias for viola da gamba featuring Dutch viola da gamba player, Ralph Rousseau.

DPA Highlights A Host of Exciting New Microphone Products at ISE 2020 Posted: 09/01/2020
DPA Highlights A Host of Exciting New Microphone Products at ISE 2020

In order to give customers as much choice as possible, DPA Microphones is unveiling new colour options for its powerful 6000 series of Subminiature Microphones so that they can be more closely matched to the wearer’s skin tone and clothing.

At ISE 2020, DPA will show its Red Dot Award-winning 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphone in brown as well as black and beige, and its 6060 and 6061 Lavalier Microphones in brown and white as well as black and beige. Already one of the smallest and most inconspicuous bodyworn microphones on the market, the 6000 series will now be even less obtrusive, leaving presenters, artists and audiences free to focus on content and performance rather than technology.

On Booth 7-V245 at ISE, where DPA is exhibiting with its Benelux distributor AMPTEC, the company will also be showing its new 4560 CORE Binaural Headset Microphone, which is specifically targeted at sound designers, podcasters, vloggers, film makers and other content creators who want to capture authentic immersive audio for their projects. Another new product is the 2028 Vocal Microphone, which aims to change the live performance landscape with its renowned natural sound, road-ready design and competitive price point.

DPA will complete its ISE line up with the 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Mic, which is expertly tailored to capture dynamic choir sound.

Magewell to Showcase New Capture, Conversion and Streaming Innovations at ISE 2020

The final ISE exhibition in Amsterdam before the show’s move to Barcelona is shaping up to be a big one for video capture, conversion and streaming innovator Magewell. Exhibiting in stand 8-G475 from February 11 to 14, the company will feature the global debuts of new products alongside the first ISE showings of several recently unveiled solutions.

Making its world premiere at ISE 2020, the ultra-compact, power-efficient Eco Capture SDI 4K Plus M.2 card captures 4K video at 60 frames per second over a single-link, 12G-SDI interface for use with popular AV software applications. Four additional models in the Eco Capture family will also be shown, as well as the company’s popular Pro Capture series of PCIe cards and USB Capture line of external capture devices.

Magewell will also showcase the industry’s broadest range of low-latency NDI® hardware converters to help simplify the transition to AV over IP for both integrators and end users. The Pro Convert family now offers six NDI encoder models and two decoders, including the recently-released Pro Convert for NDI to HDMI decoder for transforming NDI streams into high-quality HDMI baseband outputs.

Authors and Literary Celebrities Find Their Festival Voice With DPA Posted: 18/12/2019
Authors and Literary Celebrities Find Their Festival Voice With DPA

Clarity, ease of use and the ability to match the colour of the microphone to different skin tones were all good reasons why Toby Chevis, Director of UK live events company Patch Productions, chose DPA’s 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphones to amplify speakers at the prestigious Cheltenham Literature Festival.

During the 10 day event, the company used a total of 40 6066 Headsets across eight venues, including Cheltenham’s Montpelier Gardens and Town Hall sites. Among the famous participants who happily wore DPA were Andrew Lloyd Webber, Louis Theroux, Rob Drydon and Graham Norton.

“The festival was keen to be as inclusive as possible this year, so being able to offer a microphone with varying colours option, but the same audio quality, was fantastic,” Toby Chevis explains. “I’ve been a big fan of DPA Headset Microphones for eight years now and Patch Productions owns a number of 4000 Series Headsets, but for this event we bought additional microphones.”

The Cheltenham Literature Festival was broadcast on Sky Arts, which took a mixed feed straight from Patch Productions’ desk. Audio quality was very important as it was imperative that the audience could hear every word spoken by the authors on stage.

A Headphone Wearing Theatre Audience Experiences Truly Immersive Live Audio Thanks To DPA and rsquo;s New 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone Posted: 09/12/2019
A Headphone Wearing Theatre Audience Experiences Truly Immersive Live Audio Thanks To DPA and rsquo;s New 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone

Nanna-Karina Schleimann has become one of the first sound designers to make use of DPA’s new Binaural Headset Microphone, which gives sound technicians, vloggers, film makes and YouTubers an accurate and reliable tool to capture authentic immersive audio in real time.

Delivering the superior sound quality for which DPA products are internationally renowned, this new headset allows film, theatre and online content creators to capture exactly what each ear is hearing so that those consuming the content on headphones can experience full immersive sound. Earlier this year, while the 4560 Binaural Headset Microphone was still in development, Schleimann was given the opportunity to beta test it during her graduation performance from the Danish National School of Performing Arts in Copenhagen.

Three Binaural Headset Microphones were used to amplify the voices, actions and movements of the actors performing on stage in Good For Nothing, her graduation performance production. Each member of the audience was given a pair of headphones so they could hear the sound from each actor via a wireless system.

“The binaural microphones allowed the audience to hear exactly what the actors were hearing, as if they were standing on the stage and being whispered to,” Schleimann says.

DPA New 4560 CORE Binaural Headset Microphone Simplifies Immersive Sound Capture Posted: 02/12/2019
DPA and rsquo;s New 4560 CORE Binaural Headset Microphone Simplifies Immersive Sound Capture

YouTubers, sound designers, podcasters, vloggers and other content creators, including filmmakers who want to capture authentic immersive audio for their projects, can now do so with ease thanks to the launch of the new 4560 CORE Binaural Headset Microphone from Danish manufacturer, DPA Microphones.

The new binaural headset delivers the superior sound quality for which DPA products are internationally renowned. The professional quality of the microphones allows them to capture, in real time, exactly what each ear is hearing so that those listening on headphones can experience the full immersive sound. These qualities are also appealing to other applications such as sound system documentation, soundscape analysis, sound quality assessment, and sound for theatrical productions or gaming, among others. Jazz and classical musicians have also seen the potential in this mic: recording the sound from the performers’ perspective instead of the audience’s is a completely new way of sharing the artists’ sound experience with fans. The result, an ultimate surround experience.

A Choir Performance in Kuala Lumpur Achieved Crystal Clear Sound Thanks to DPA Microphones Posted: 12/11/2019
A Choir Performance in Kuala Lumpur Achieved Crystal Clear Sound Thanks to DPA Microphones

DPA Microphones’ recently launched 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphone was used to great effect in Kuala Lumpur when a choir of 12 men and women gathered in Independence Square to mark the 50th anniversary of the Department of Enforcement, Kuala Lumpur City Hall. The event, entitled Hari Penguatkuasa DBKL, featured a parade in conjunction with the Golden Jubilee Celebration of Enforcement Day. It culminated in a live performance by the DBKL City Hall Choir who performed in front of an audience of approximately 2,000 people.

Mr Ajun Mubari, head of Malaysian audio rental company Mubari, says DPA’s 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphones were chosen to amplify the choir because their integrated shock mount and wind screen made them ideally suited to outdoor use. “The 4097 microphone is awesome and very easy to work with,” he says. “We used one pair to cover the choir group and positioned them on either side of the choir who were standing in a semi-circle. The concert generated very high sound pressure levels – in excess of 90dB – but, thanks to the 4097’s high isolation, the sound coming from the stage monitors (which were placed in front of the choir and behind the microphones) did not affect the available gain during the performance. This was a huge advantage as it meant we could capture the true sound of the choir without picking up any other sound.”

The Authentic Sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano is Captured by DPA Posted: 07/11/2019
The Authentic Sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano is Captured by DPA

When musician and sound designer Paolo Principi was asked to record the authentic sound of a Fazioli Grand Piano for a new silent system and virtual instrument multi-sample, there was only one microphone brand that he felt could do the task justice – and that was DPA.

“I wanted to capture the rich and complex sounds of this piano in the most natural way,” Principi explains. “For this, it was important that I used the best solution for each element of the audio path. I chose DPA for the microphones, Vovox for the cables and Apogee for the converter because each of these brands is renowned for delivering high-quality audio without coloring the sound in any way.”

Principi, whose company, PSound, specializes in sampling and creating virtual instruments, says he was delighted when Fazioli asked him to record its flagship piano – the F278 Gran Coda. To accomplish this task, Principi chose two matched pairs of DPA 4006 Omnidirectional Microphones (including one pair with nose cones for a perfect response across the whole audio frequency range) and a pair of 4015 Wide Cardioid Microphones. These were supplied by DPA’s Italian distributor, M Casale Bauer, and used to record ‘binaural,’ ‘close’ and ‘side’ sounds respectively.

“I was really delighted by the naturalness, precision and detail that all the DPA microphones delivered,” adds Principi. “I was also very surprised by the linearity of their frequency response, especially for the off-axis sounds – thanks to the incredible nose cones.”

Principi recorded the piano note-by-note (all 88 keys) and across numerous dynamic levels (12 main levels, plus noises and different articulation levels), so that he could accurately capture its entire range of sounds. He also used a special machine to play each key with the same dynamic level and spent a great deal of time working out the best microphone position for each of the three sounds (binaural, close, side) that he was recording. He then listened to the audio in his own studio until he was sure he was obtaining the real sound of the instrument.

DPA 6066 Subminiature Headset Mic Nominated for Prestigious TEC Award Posted: 05/11/2019
DPA and rsquo;s 6066 Subminiature Headset Mic Nominated for Prestigious TEC Award

DPA Microphones6066 Subminiature Headset Microphone is a nominee for the 35th Annual NAMM Technical Excellence & Creativity (TEC) Awards in the Microphones – Sound Reinforcement Category. Products that are nominated for a TEC Award have made a significant impact on modern sound and music. With a capsule measuring in at just three millimeters in diameter, the 6066 microphones may be small, but they are powerful in terms of performance – making this solution an ideal candidate for a TEC Award.

Featuring CORE by DPA technology, the mic reduces distortion, increases dynamic range and features a frequency range of 20Hz-20kHz along with a noise floor of only 24dB(A). The 6066 also benefits from a completely redesigned, lightweight, one-size-fits-all headset that attaches over the ears for maximum comfort and includes a spring mechanism that grips below the head/ears for added security. It even received a Red Dot design award for its innovative and user-friendly design.

“We put a great deal of time and energy into designing a headset microphone that is elegant and implements all of the features we wanted in a small package,” says René Mørch, product manager, DPA Microphones. “The 6000 series capsule is the smallest we have ever designed. It required working on the edge of what is physically possible in order to get the renowned sound of the five-millimeter capsule of the 4066 into the new three-millimeter capsule of the 6066. The goal behind this microphone was to develop a solution that would be nearly invisible, to both live and broadcast audiences, while providing crystal-clear sound. The 6066 is discreet and visually appealing, and does not compromise on sound quality.”

Since its launch, the 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphone has received rave reviews. Its secure, lightweight, unobtrusive and comfortable design, coupled with DPA’s renowned natural and pristine sound-quality, has led to significant sales around the world and across various market sectors, including broadcast, theatre and live sound.

The University of the Third Age
Bernard Newnham Here's a cliché - "We all get to be old one day - if we're lucky". There comes a point when things like "....mastered in Dolby Vision Domestic and SDR Rec 709....." become just a touch unimportant (and actually I never really understood that stuff in the first place). I retired for the third time last year - BBC producer, and before that cameraman, then freelance producer, trainer, do-your-own camera, sound, editor, blah blah, then 11 years university teaching. I did my bit - never a BAFTA, but certainly the first into a good few things - but it all has to come to an end sometime.

Review: JVC GY-HC900 Camera
Andy McKenzie JVC has a long history of developing relatively low price-point equipment, dating right back to its success in the 1970s with the VHS tape format. JVC products sometimes impact the broadcast mainstream but generally find greatest success in niche market segments such as news production where price and portability take priority over the no-comprise quality and robustness demanded by the leading studio-based and OB content producers.

NAB 2019 Highlights
Paul MacKenzie The NAB Show in Las Vegas never loses its capacity to surprise. With NHK already transmitting in 8K and the Tokyo Olympics just a year away, this might have been the year that 8K equipment prices descended from the stratosphere to just plain expensive. The main trends at NAB 2019 were an increasing focus on HD-HDR, Media-over-IP and 4K. 8K was pretty low key except for a very promising demo on the Sharp stand: an extremely compact 8K camera at an impressively low price point: $4,000. Shooting at 30 frames per second to an internal card and using a prosumer-style Olympus lens, it looked very much an entry-level product but one with phenomenal potential for any videographer looking to work with very large display screen sizes.
