Bryan Sol Aponte Takes DPA Microphones Back to the 80s on the Set of Mixed-ish Posted: 25/03/2020
Bryan and lsquo;Sol and rsquo; Aponte Takes DPA Microphones Back to the 80s on the Set of Mixed-ish

Veteran Sound Mixer Bryan “Sol” Aponte relies on DPA Microphones4061 Miniature Omnidirectional Mic to capture the hilarious and witty dialogue of one of the network’s top sitcoms, mixed-ish. Aponte’s 20-year history in the industry features an impressive resume that includes two Emmy nominations and credits on MADtv, Workaholics, American Gangster, The Young and the Restless and Splitting up Together. He recently swapped out his previous lavaliers for the 4061s because of the impressive, natural sound quality these DPA mics provide.

“I’ve been using the DPA lavs for a year now and I absolutely love them,” says Aponte. “My audio utility, the legendary Nick Carbone, first introduced me to them—he spoke so highly of DPA microphones in comparison to other manufacturers’ solutions. When I first tested the 4061s, I fell in love with them and immediately replaced my inventory of lavaliers with DPAs. The presence boost on the 4061s not only sounds natural, but you can place them almost anywhere on talent and capture great sound.”

The decision to switch to DPA was an easy one for Aponte. “Prior to using DPA mics, I really didn’t know what I was missing, but after using them for a year, I feel like they are far superior,” he adds. “Once I heard the mics and did side-by-side comparisons with other manufacturers, I knew I couldn’t afford not to use DPA. The 4061s don’t create microphonic noise—a challenge that I’ve faced with other brands—and they take my mixing game to the next level.”

With a capsule designed with a double vent protection system and moisture resistant materials, the 4061 miniature lavalier features a condenser element with a frequency and sensitivity response that will accurately reproduce audio signals from the human voice. Additionally, Aponte appreciates the added benefits he receives from DPA’s concealer clip, designed specifically for the 4061. “The concealer clip has helped me to solve an issue with which I have long struggled—clothing rustle, which is every mixer’s worst nightmare and a challenge we are constantly trying to overcome,” he explains. “Since incorporating DPA into the mix, that problem is nearly non-existent; they are a game changer.”

Hiding In Plain Sight Is How To Succeed With DPA Lavalier Microphones Posted: 19/03/2020
Hiding In Plain Sight Is How To Succeed With DPA Lavalier Microphones

Production Sound Mixer and Location Sound Recordist David Thirion uses DPA microphones to capture audio for film and television projects because he likes their audio quality and natural sound. Equally important is the tiny size of some models, which makes them ideal for situations where they need to be hidden on actors’ bodies or in costumes.

In recent months Thirion has been experimenting with DPA’s latest bodyworn products, the 6000 Subminiature Series, in particular the 6060 Subminiature Omnidirectional lavalier microphone. On the latest series of Parlement, a new television series created by Belgian-based Artémis Productions, he used it to great effect – although not how he originally intended.

“We initially planned to use it on a female actor, but she was wearing such light silk that it was impossible to hide the mic because the weight of the cable was pulling at the fabric. Instead we used a DPA 4061 lavalier microphone secured with a bra clip, which worked just fine,” he says. "The 6060, however, did solve a different problem - mic-ing the show’s male talent whose chest was too hairy to have a microphone attached. It can be very difficult to mic up a hairy chested actor wearing a white office shirt, no tie and a blazer, but we found the perfect spot for the 6060 in the collar of the shirt. We used an URSA mini mount and covered with white URSA moleskin so that it was completely disguised. We also hid a 6060 in a tie knot using a Sanken RM11 concealer. The mic is so slim that it helped prevent any tie knot deformation.”

Hollow Hearts Sound Fantastic With DPA Microphones Posted: 03/03/2020
Hollow Hearts Sound Fantastic With DPA Microphones

Norwegian sound engineer Tom Meyer has built up a large collection of DPA microphones over the years and has always been very happy with the results they deliver.

Based in Bardu in northern Norway, Tom Meyer has been tackling live sound engineering projects since 1990 and now runs his own company, TM Tour Production. He first became aware of DPA through the 4011 Cardioid Microphone and was very impressed with its sound, particularly when he used it to amplify large conferences or kick drums for touring bands.

In recent months, TM Tour Production has been using its DPA microphones on a variety of projects, including live gigs with Hollow Hearts, a folk band from Tromsø.

The mic package Meyer uses for Hollow Hearts – and for many of the other bands he works with - includes a 2011 Twin Diaphragm Cardioid microphone with 4011 windscreens on kickdrum, a 4018V with a compact preamp on snare top, a 2011 on HiHat, overheads and guitars, a 4099 Instrument Microphone on snare (under) and toms and 4018v d:facto Vocal Microphones for all vocalists

“Hollow Hearts plays quite low on stage, so the openness of the DPAs sounds really good,” he says. “I think the 2011 in particular is fast becoming an industry standard because you can put it everywhere and it always sound great in your PA.”

The Natural Sound of DPA Microphones Brings Real Pleasure To Rostislav Pavlik Posted: 25/02/2020
The Natural Sound of DPA Microphones Brings Real Pleasure To Rostislav Pavl and iacute;k

Although it is more than 14 years since Slovakian producer and record label owner Rostislav Pavlík first heard a DPA microphone, the memory of the exquisite pleasure the experience gave him is still as fresh now as it was then.

“The first DPA stereo pair I bought contained two 4006 Omnidirectional Microphones and the sound of them shocked me so much that I no longer wanted to use any other microphones,” he explains. “DPA are great for everything. What I appreciate most is that they portray truth, reality, nature, and make musical instruments sound how they should sound. I have bought many more DPAs since then and for many years they have been the only microphones I have used for my recordings.”

Based in Tvrdošín in northern Slovakia, Rostislav Pavlík began his career in the early 1990s when he started recording amateur ensembles and folk musicians for his own label, Pavlik Records.

Since then he has gone from strength to strength, recording classical, jazz and folk projects ranging from solo musicians to chamber ensembles and orchestras, in both stereo and 5.1 surround sound. Pavlik Records now has its own studio that is equipped with Dynaudio monitoring, a Mackie MCU PRO console and a Merging Technologies’ Pyramix Digital Audio Workstation with a Horus Networked Audio Interface. The recording system is digital and allows Pavlik to record in very high resolution (384 kHz and 32 bits).

Dinner In America Rides Through Suburbia With DPA Posted: 06/02/2020
Dinner In America Rides Through Suburbia With DPA

Indie film Dinner in America takes viewers

on a precarious journey with a punk rocker and his fan-turned-love interest as

they travel through middle America. Written and directed by Adam Rehmeier, the

film was shot in many different suburban locations, which often presented unique

audio challenges for the sound team. Rehmeier appointed Daniel S. McCoy, CAS, owner

of production sound company, ToneMesa, to provide his trademark sonic fidelity

for the project. To capture pristine audio despite sometimes noisy locations,

McCoy turned to his trusted 4061 Miniature Omnidirectional, 4017B Shotgun Microphone

and 4018B Supercardioid Microphone, along with the newly launched 6061 CORE

Subminiature Mics from DPA Microphones.

The Taipei Jazz Orchestra Delivers Exuberant Performances With Help From DPA Microphones Posted: 31/01/2020
The Taipei Jazz Orchestra Delivers Exuberant Performances With Help From DPA Microphones

The Taipei Jazz Orchestra is ensuring the best audio quality for audiences,by using various DPA microphones, such as the company’s versatile 4099 Instrument Microphones, to amplify its sound.

“We have been working with DPA for several years now,” says Mr. A-Fu Kao, the Orchestra’s audio engineer and General Manager of record label Just Music. “We really love the sound characteristics of DPA products because they are so natural.”

The Orchestra has recently been experimenting with DPA’s recently launched 4097 CORE Supercardioid Choir Microphone, which provides the same sonic qualities as the CORE 4099 Instrument Microphone but was designed specifically to capture dynamic choir sound.

The Orchestra gave the microphone a thorough testing on Christmas Eve when it played a Swing Christmas concert at the Taipei Zhong Hall. The concert featured a choir of children singing popular Christmas songs and Mr. Kao was keen to ensure that their vocals were not drowned out by the much louder instruments.

“The 4097’s supercardioid pattern provided a very clear sound with high gain before feedback, which minimized the sound from off axis,” he explains. “This is very helpful, especially in venues where the acoustics are bad. The microphone sounded amazing and worked perfectly, allowing us to capture the natural sound of the choir.”

The Neutrality of DPA Microphones Helps Capture Pianist Helena Basilova Rich, Velvety Sound Posted: 13/01/2020
The Neutrality of DPA Microphones Helps Capture Pianist Helena Basilova and rsquo;s Rich, Velvety Sound

Producer and engineer Brendon Heinst used DPA’s 4006A omnidirectional microphones to capture the rich sound that is the hallmark of Dutch/Russian classical pianist Helena Basilova.

Fearing the microphones he already owned were too ‘bright’ for the task, Heinst switched to a 5006A Surround Kit consisting of five 4006A microphones, which are carefully factory-matched so that their already low standard tolerances are even closer – within ±0.5 dB. Heinst positioned these next to the piano in the style of a traditional Decca Tree, but with different dimensions based on a variant of the Tree that he had perfected while studying for a Masters in Audio Engineering at Utrecht School of Arts & Technology.

“My experience of using the 4006As on this recording was so good that I was pretty much sold from there,” Heinst says. “The sound is very, very transparent and neutral, yet it's surprisingly musical as well. There's a certain natural relaxedness to them compared to the microphones I was previously using, and this wasn’t only obvious to an audio engineer. Basically, every musician we've recorded since has noticed the difference between my old microphones and the DPAs, and vote in favour of the DPAs.”

Based in Utrecht, Brendon Heinst is a co-founder of TRPTK, a production company with its own recording, mixing and mastering studio and record label. Established in 2014, the company is now operated by Heinst, Maya Fridman (who is also an artist on the label) and Ben van Leliveld.

Since investing in a 5006A Surround Kit for the Helena Basilova recordings, Brendon Heinst has used it for a number of other projects including a recording of Telemann’s long-lost Fantasias for viola da gamba featuring Dutch viola da gamba player, Ralph Rousseau.

Authors and Literary Celebrities Find Their Festival Voice With DPA Posted: 18/12/2019
Authors and Literary Celebrities Find Their Festival Voice With DPA

Clarity, ease of use and the ability to match the colour of the microphone to different skin tones were all good reasons why Toby Chevis, Director of UK live events company Patch Productions, chose DPA’s 6066 Subminiature Headset Microphones to amplify speakers at the prestigious Cheltenham Literature Festival.

During the 10 day event, the company used a total of 40 6066 Headsets across eight venues, including Cheltenham’s Montpelier Gardens and Town Hall sites. Among the famous participants who happily wore DPA were Andrew Lloyd Webber, Louis Theroux, Rob Drydon and Graham Norton.

“The festival was keen to be as inclusive as possible this year, so being able to offer a microphone with varying colours option, but the same audio quality, was fantastic,” Toby Chevis explains. “I’ve been a big fan of DPA Headset Microphones for eight years now and Patch Productions owns a number of 4000 Series Headsets, but for this event we bought additional microphones.”

The Cheltenham Literature Festival was broadcast on Sky Arts, which took a mixed feed straight from Patch Productions’ desk. Audio quality was very important as it was imperative that the audience could hear every word spoken by the authors on stage.

The University of the Third Age
Bernard Newnham Here's a cliché - "We all get to be old one day - if we're lucky". There comes a point when things like "....mastered in Dolby Vision Domestic and SDR Rec 709....." become just a touch unimportant (and actually I never really understood that stuff in the first place). I retired for the third time last year - BBC producer, and before that cameraman, then freelance producer, trainer, do-your-own camera, sound, editor, blah blah, then 11 years university teaching. I did my bit - never a BAFTA, but certainly the first into a good few things - but it all has to come to an end sometime.

Review: JVC GY-HC900 Camera
Andy McKenzie JVC has a long history of developing relatively low price-point equipment, dating right back to its success in the 1970s with the VHS tape format. JVC products sometimes impact the broadcast mainstream but generally find greatest success in niche market segments such as news production where price and portability take priority over the no-comprise quality and robustness demanded by the leading studio-based and OB content producers.

NAB 2019 Highlights
Paul MacKenzie The NAB Show in Las Vegas never loses its capacity to surprise. With NHK already transmitting in 8K and the Tokyo Olympics just a year away, this might have been the year that 8K equipment prices descended from the stratosphere to just plain expensive. The main trends at NAB 2019 were an increasing focus on HD-HDR, Media-over-IP and 4K. 8K was pretty low key except for a very promising demo on the Sharp stand: an extremely compact 8K camera at an impressively low price point: $4,000. Shooting at 30 frames per second to an internal card and using a prosumer-style Olympus lens, it looked very much an entry-level product but one with phenomenal potential for any videographer looking to work with very large display screen sizes.
