Riedel MediorNet and Artist Provide Signal Routing and Comms Backbone for RTL Croatias Studio Upgrade to HD Posted: 26/03/2020
Riedel MediorNet and Artist Provide Signal Routing and Comms Backbone for RTL Croatias Studio Upgrade to HD

RTL Croatia, one of Croatia's largest broadcasters, has chosen Riedel Communications' MediorNet real-time network and Artist digital matrix intercom for its comprehensive studio upgrade to HD operations. MediorNet and Artist are at the core of an integrated and decentralized signal routing and communications backbone that drives RTL's news and master control rooms, including a large video wall with more than 100 picture-in-picture (PiP) displays.

Launched in 2004, RTL Croatia is a division of RTL Group, a Luxembourg-based digital media company with interests in 61 television and 30 radio stations in 10 countries. Working with Riedel's local distributor and consultant, AVC Zagreb, RTL Croatia has just finished a four-year project to upgrade its production facilities to deliver its eight channels in HD. The latest HD channel, RTL Adria, went live in January.

"When RTL Croatia presented their requirements for a comprehensive networking and routing solution for the studio upgrade, we had no hesitation in recommending Riedel Communications," said Juraj Novina, Sales Manager at AVC Zagreb. "We were completely confident that MediorNet could provide the seamless, reliable, and high-quality signal transport and communications needed for RTL's new HD service. Plus, MediorNet also gives RTL the guarantee of a smooth transition to IP in the future, with the proven track record of a market-tested solution."

Foxtel Expands Ultra HD Services with Harmonic Posted: 12/03/2020
Foxtel Expands Ultra HD Services with Harmonic

Harmonic (NASDAQ: HLIT) today announced that Foxtel, a leading subscription-TV provider in Australia, has deployed Harmonic's software-based Electra® XOS live video processor to increase efficiencies in its Ultra HD service offering. Utilizing the AI-powered Electra XOS solution, Foxtel is able to deliver additional Ultra HD programming using the same fixed bandwidth capacity.

"Video delivery technologies have evolved tremendously over the past few years, enabling even greater efficiencies," said Darren Windus, distribution systems manager at Foxtel. "As a longstanding Harmonic customer, transitioning to the Electra XOS solution allows us to take advantage of advanced technologies, such as AI, and as a result deliver richer Ultra HD content with amazing quality at low bitrates."

Harmonic's Electra XOS solution, part of Harmonic's market-leading Electra family, brings together industry-leading expertise in video algorithms and the latest in AI innovation to deliver exceptional video quality when bandwidth is limited. The solution supports streaming and broadcast formats, HDR processing, uncompressed and compressed IP inputs, and integrated packaging to simplify live video workflows. The software-based Electra XOS platform allows for continual updates with the latest technology advancements, ensuring that Foxtel stays ahead of the curve.

"Today's viewers expect to watch Ultra HD channels, especially for live sports. But delivering higher resolution content can put a significant strain on the operators' network capacity," said Tony Berthaud, vice president of sales and video services, APAC, at Harmonic. "Foxtel trusted Harmonic's expertise in high-efficiency encoding to simplify the launch of its Ultra HD programming. This successful deployment at Foxtel is a clear demonstration of the world-class video quality, optimized bandwidth and system reliability that the Electra XOS solution provides."

Magewell to Launch Flexible 4K Decoder for NDI and SRT at 2020 NAB Show Posted: 05/03/2020
Magewell to Launch Flexible 4K Decoder for NDI and SRT at 2020 NAB Show

Magewell will unveil its most powerful decoder hardware to date in booth SU5724 at the 2020 NAB Show (April 19-22 in Las Vegas). Believed to be the industry's first hardware decoder to support both Newtek's NDI(r) technology for production-grade media transport and the Secure Reliable Transport (SRT) protocol -- developed and open-sourced by Haivision -- for internet-delivered H.264 and H.265 streams, the Pro Convert for NDI(r) to HDMI 4K transforms IP streams up to 4Kp60 for baseband output over HDMI.

The company is also simultaneously launching a second new model, the Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI 4K, which offers the same rich features as the Pro Convert for NDI(r) to HDMI 4K for users who don't require NDI support. Both models also support additional streaming protocols including RTSP, RTMP, UDP, RTP and HTTP streaming.

The two new low-latency converters decode input streams up to 4196x2160 at full 60 frames per second for output to baseband monitors, projectors, production or distribution equipment via an HDMI 2.0 interface. Offering the high reliability, assured performance and compact size of dedicated hardware compared to software-based stream playout, they are perfect for applications including multi-site video distribution; image magnification (IMAG); video walls; digital signage; remote production; or bridging legacy and next-generation media infrastructures.

NAB 2020: FOR-A Processors Provide and nbsp;Conversion Options for Multi-Format Productions

FOR-A Corporation of America will showcase its processing solutions at the 2020 NAB Show (Booth C5016), which runs April 19-22 in Las Vegas, Nev. Designed to support today’s multi-format production environments, FOR-A’s multi-purpose signal processors and frame rate converters offer a variety of features to improve live production and newsroom workflows.

“From HD to 4K and beyond, today’s broadcasters have to juggle content in multiple formats from multiple sources in multiple locations, sometimes within the same production,” said Ken Truong, President of FOR-A Corporation of America. “At NAB, FOR-A is devoting an area of our booth to signal processing solutions, so content creators and distributors can find the right solutions for their conversion requirements.”

The versatile FA-9600 multi-purpose signal processor, which was featured at a world rugby event in October, will be used again by premiere broadcasters at the 2020 Tokyo summer games. Ideal for transmission centers, mobile production vehicles, production studios, and news stations, the compact FA-9600 simplifies all types of video conversion, and has been highly evaluated for its fully compliant HDR/SDR conversion specifications. Each of its two HD/SD inputs includes a frame synchronizer, HDR and Wide Color Gamut support, and conversion of multiple formats, including 12G, 4K (UHD), 1080p, and HD/SD. Users can switch between simultaneous 4K/HD mode with single-channel up/down conversion or dual HD mode with dual-channel up/down conversion.

Designed for live HDR broadcast production, the FA-9600 also supports 3D LUT for advanced color grading. The processor features unprecedented conversion accuracy with its built-in LUTs and support of 3D LUTs for SDR-HDR, HDR-HDR, and HDR-SDR conversions in mixed SDR and HDR production environments. The flexibility of the FA-9600 also allows user LUTs to be saved for instant recall. Several SDR/HDR log curves are supported, including SDR BT.1886, SDR BT.709, HLG BT.2100, SMPTE ST 2084 (PQ), S-Log3, Canon Log 2, and Canon Log 3.

New firmware for JVC CONNECTED CAM cameras enables Apple ProRes 422 recording to SSD

JVC has announced new firmware for its range of CONNECTED CAM models – now shipping – including the handheld GY-HC500 and GY-HC550 4K camcorders and the GY-HC900 broadcast camcorder, available in ENG and studio configurations. The latest firmware upgrade (v0110 for the GY-HC500/550 and v3.0 for GY-HC900, available free to existing customers) lets the cameras record to both SSD and SD media in a wide variety of formats, including Apple ProRes 422 recording and backup mode recording to an SSD drive.

The GY-HC500 and GY-HC550 handheld models feature class-leading streaming and IP connectivity, with the new firmware delivering 10-bit Apple ProRes 422 50/60p recording in both 4K and HD to SSD. The update on all CONNECTED CAM models also enables HEVC/H.265 live streaming via the KA-EN200 streaming encoder; this adapter can be inserted directly into a slot on the GY-HC500, GY-HC550 and GY-HC900 camcorders, supporting up to 1920x1080 resolution and reducing network bandwidth by half compared to H.264. Other features added by the new firmware include support of SRT protocol and Network Time Protocol, plus integrated broadcast overlay graphics on JVC’s GY-HC900 broadcast camcorder.

Customers will be able to see the range of JVC CONNECTED CAM models at the KitPlus show in London at the end of this month.

No Static AV Delivers Ultra HD Workflow for Annual Baby2baby Fundraising Gala Posted: 07/02/2020
No Static AV Delivers Ultra HD Workflow for Annual Baby2baby Fundraising Gala

Blackmagic Design today announced that LA based event production company No Static AV (NSAV) used an Ultra HD live production workflow featuring URSA Broadcast cameras and ATEM switchers to deliver in house AV and IMAG for the annual Baby2Baby fundraising gala, which raises millions of dollars for the nonprofit and the children living in poverty that it serves.

Held at the 3Labs event space in Culver City, CA, the Baby2Baby gala brings together celebrities, entrepreneurs and philanthropists, and the evening hosts the top chefs in Los Angeles, an exclusive auction and inspiring program, all while honoring this year’s Giving Tree Award winner, Chrissy Teigen. Past honorees include Amy Adams, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Garner, Kerry Washington, Kate Hudson, Drew Barrymore and Jessica Alba.

With no shortage of AV deliverables, NSAV used its mobile production unit featuring a custom made flypack designed specifically with the Baby2Baby gala in mind. The unit relied on several Blackmagic Design products, including four URSA Broadcasts complete with URSA Studio Viewfinders, four Camera Fiber Converters and four Studio Fiber Converters for fiber connectivity between the cameras and switcher, an ATEM 1 M/E Production Studio 4K and ATEM 1 M/E Advanced Panel for live switching, and a Smart Videohub 20x20 router to distribute content throughout the venue. NSAV also used an ATEM Camera Control Panel for remote camera control and Teranex AV standards converter for on the fly conversions.

NSAV praised the image quality from the URSA Broadcasts and the ease of use of the live production gear. The URSA Broadcasts were used for IMAG and the content was also recorded in camera in 4K and in 1080 at the mobile production unit. Camera Fiber Converters and Studio Fiber Converters were necessary for fiber communication between the cameras and the switcher, giving the team real time control of all camera aspects, and the ATEM Camera Control Panel allowed NSAV to properly adjust color correction, shading and shutter speed during rehearsals and the live show.

Magewell Debuting Versatile, Multi-Protocol Live Stream Decoder at ISE 2020 Posted: 28/01/2020
Magewell Debuting Versatile, Multi-Protocol Live Stream Decoder at ISE 2020

Magewell has announced a versatile new conversion product that seamlessly brings together the worlds of IP-based streaming and baseband AV presentation equipment. The new Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI multi-protocol, SRT-compatible streaming media decoder will make its first public appearance in stand 8-G475 at the ISE 2020 exhibition in Amsterdam.

While earlier Pro Convert models transform professional AV signals to and from NewTek’s NDI® AV-over-IP technology, the new Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI decodes a standard H.264 (AVC) or H.265 (HEVC) compressed video stream into a high-quality HDMI output for connection to baseband monitors, projectors and switchers. Supporting a wide range of streaming protocols for maximum source compatibility, the low-latency decoder is ideal for applications including multi-site video distribution between corporate, educational and church campuses; remote production; surveillance monitoring; digital signage and more.

The Pro Convert H.26x to HDMI is Magewell’s first product to support the SRT (Secure Reliable Transport) open source protocol. Enabling secure, resilient, low-latency video delivery over unpredictable networks, SRT ensures high-quality streaming experiences even over the public internet. Magewell is a proud member of the SRT Alliance. Other supported protocols include RTSP, RTMP, UDP, RTP and HTTP streaming.

Parx Casino and Racings New HD Control Room Crosses the Finish Line with JVC Connected Cam Posted: 09/01/2020
Parx Casino and Racings New HD Control Room Crosses the Finish Line with JVC Connected Cam

The new CONNECTED CAM broadcast camcorder from JVC Professional Video, a division of JVCKENWOOD USA Corporation, is being put through the paces in the newly built HD control room at Philadelphia’s Parx Casino and Racing. Now equipped with nine JVC CONNECTED CAMS, the casino’s thoroughbred horse racing division selected the cameras to help boost production for its live simulcasts, expanding its reach beyond the racetrack, to online audiences around the world.

Included among the studio’s new high-end gear are six JVC GY-HC900STU studio and three GY-HC900CHU broadcast cameras, which offer built-in streaming and connectivity options, and advanced low latency. Nearly all of Parx’s nine JVC CONNECTED CAMS are used in actual broadcast settings, with one camera reserved as a spare. Six of those ocations are in camera towers around the track and can be used to help officiate during a race. The cameras are positioned strategically around the track to capture all angles for review – in case there’s an objection or an inquiry against a horse. Parx also has cameras in the paddock, where the horses get saddled up and jockeys receive their instructions before they go out onto the track. The venue plans to use the spare camera as a mobile and/or streaming unit, when it’s ready to expand into more wireless streaming productions.”

Why Routing Control
Mark Davies Routing control sits at the very heart of all advanced control systems. A well-configured system that manages signal routes throughout a facility and groups multi-level actions into a single control surface allows for much richer and focused production. Using one-touch panels, operators could route video, audio and data signals between the various elements of a network, perhaps to route a camera signal to a vision mixer, as well as through other processors, before it arrives at its destination. Users could adopt routing control to trigger an external event, a complete reconfiguration of a multi-router setup, route several sources simultaneously, or make set routes or multiple routes via a single button press.

Accurate Ad Tracking with OTT
Tim Armstrong As viewers embrace and transition to OTT, the opportunities and flexibility provided to advertisers are growing fast. However, like all technology shifts, this transition hasn’t come without challenges. Some technology used to monetise video over the years has resulted in a less-than-ideal viewing experience, with disruptive transitions and buffering two of the main issues. The good news is that advances in ad insertion technology mean content providers can now deliver a seamless OTT viewing experience, as well as addressable advertising options. This paves the way for the delivery of high-quality ad viewing while growing the advertiser's ROI.

The Importance of Audio Production Systems
Tom Knowles Large-scale entertainment programming presents a unique set of challenges for broadcasters. Often extremely high-profile keystones of a broadcaster’s schedule and increasingly billed as live ‘event television’, as well as delivering the very best audio quality they demand a huge degree of flexibility and agility in terms of their production. With music being such a core component of their appeal to growing audiences, in both linear broadcast and online, nowhere is that more important than their audio production systems.
