NUGEN Audio Unveils SEQ-S Software Update at NAMM 2020 Posted: 13/01/2020
NUGEN Audio Unveils SEQ-S Software Update at NAMM 2020

NUGEN Audio is pleased to announce the latest software release for its SEQ-S linear phase ‘spline match and morph’ EQ solution at the 2020 NAMM Show (Booth 14101). Now with a resizeable direct-draw interface and EQ matching presets, SEQ-S features a surround capability of up to 7.1, making it easy to fine-tune audio. Ideal for both corrective mix work and gentle mastering polish, SEQ-S is perfect for movie, television and music productions.

“We are very excited to showcase the latest updates to NUGEN’s SEQ-S for the first time ever at the 2020 NAMM Show,” says Paul Tapper, CEO, NUGEN Audio. “Our engineering team has worked diligently over the past year to provide significant product updates and developments, and we’re sure that current and future customers will love the latest additions. SEQ-S delivers creative EQ power in a way that no other solution provides. It allows you to massage and correct any audio with incredible resolution that you just can’t get with a traditional parametric interface – allowing imaginations to run free.”

SEQ-S’ intuitive visual interface adapts to suit the task at hand, whether simple or sophisticated. Using this solution, producers can fine-tune their tracks with flexible, detailed envelopes that are difficult to achieve with traditional EQ. The new preset system for EQ matching enables producers to expedite their workflow by streamlining the match EQ process, this feature allows them to push their sound toward reference material or take a deeper creative approach with filter morphing and tempo locked effects. Additionally, the system’s newly implemented, resizeable interface offers further flexibility for users to set up SEQ-S for their precise workflow needs, allowing for more detailed curve sculpting, among other things.

MBC TV Korea installs two Calrec Apollo consoles into flagship channel Posted: 09/01/2020
MBC TV Korea installs two Calrec Apollo consoles into flagship channel

Long-time Korean Calrec customer Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC), which has an extensive installed base of Artemis and Apollo consoles, has once again turned to Calrec to satisfy its growing audio needs with the purchase of two additional Apollo consoles.

Ji-hun An, Audio Director, Sound Department at MBC TV, said, “Being very familiar with Calrec’s Artemis and Apollo consoles, we’re confident in the stability of the company’s technology, which is vital in a live environment. The Apollo surface is also easy to use and when working live because we frequently have to adjust parameters during a broadcast, including channel dynamics and routing. The Apollo’s control surface makes this simple, and it’s high DSP count means configuring it for different projects is straightforward.”

MBC acquired the two additional Apollos from Calrec for its flagship MBC TV channel. The first console is installed in studio C, which is used for the production and recording of live-to-tape UHD and HD current affairs and wider cultural content. The second is in studio E, where similar content is produced for live-to-air broadcasts. MBC use a fixed format MADI box for multi-track recording in both studios.

TV3 Catalonia Upgrades to HD-HDR Production with Leader LV7300

Catalonia's public broadcaster Catalan Audiovisual Media Corporation (Corporació Catalana de Mitjans Audiovisuals or CCMA) has chosen Leader's LV7300 rasterizer as the master reference instrument as part of an upgrade to HD-HDR at its Audiovisual Production Centre in Barcelona. The CCMA's primary channel is TV3 Catalonia which is transmitted to viewers in Catalonia, Andorra and the Balearic Islands.

Supplied by Leader distribution partner SetUp Electrónica, the LV7300 will be used to check video and audio signal quality in a newly equipped studio equipped to support 4K, HD and super slow motion. The studio's primary role will be to create high quality HD-HDR content.

"Sourcing from 4K-native Sony cameras with  IP connectivity and ITU-R BT 2020 color gamut will allow us to capture images with very rich colors, greater than ever contrast and high detail," says TV3 Area of Exploitation director Ramon Sangrà.

"Leader's LV7300 rasterizer gives our operators all the tools they need to ensure that these enhancements are carried right through the production process from capture, post and archiving to actual transmission. The instrument's ability to handle 4K helps to safeguard our investment as the broadcast industry embraces ever higher standards."

Film students at FAMU in Prague get a lesson in audio with Calrec Brio console Posted: 03/12/2019
Film students at FAMU in Prague get a lesson in audio with Calrec and rsquo;s Brio console

The Film and TV School of the Academy of Performing Arts (FAMU) in Prague has purchased its first digital console - a Brio36 - from Calrec. It’s being used for various projects including automated dialogue replacement/voiceovers in the school’s recording room.

Martin Kebrdle, Head of the Sound Department Studio at FAMU, explained that the school needed a powerful console that could be used with Avid Pro Tools on several applications. “The console is connected to Pro Tools with MADI cards. In the future we plan to add Calrec’s Hydra2 networking. The console is perfect for our needs; it’s compact and it has been incredibly easy for the students to learn — which has been a blessing since this is the first time many of them are using a digital audio console. The Brio is a great introduction into the world of digital audio recording for our students.”

FAMU is the fifth oldest film school in the world and was founded in 1947. As part of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague, FAMU is composed of eleven departments, where students can achieve their bachelors, masters and doctoral degree in every discipline of filmmaking including: directing, documentary filmmaking, scriptwriting, dramaturgy, animated film, cinematography, sound design, editing, production, photography, and the interdisciplinary Center of Audiovisual Studies. The Brio is installed in the school’s sound direction room. The sale and installation were handled by Calrec’s distributor Mediatronik S.R.O.

“The fact that the Brio is being used by students to help them prepare for careers in audio clearly shows the Brio’s versatility. It’s not simply a console for broadcasters; it’s useful for many applications and awards relevant experience for those learning an audio discipline,” commented Mike Reddick, International Sales Manager, Calrec.

Testing Hybrid Workflows
Martin Mulligan With the industry’s steady migration from traditional HD-SDI to IP and/or 12G-SDI infrastructures, broadcasters are now faced with the significant challenge of having to manage and monitor a wide array of new signal types in order to provide properly managed workflows. The switch away from HD-SDI is not happening overnight and, indeed, is happening at different speeds in different parts of the world. Due to this rapidly evolving technology landscape, reliable and versatile test and measurement (T&M) solutions have never been more important.

Live Streaming Workflows Examined
Bryce Button In today’s hyperconnected world, audiences expect accessible, high quality content across the displays they see every day, whether at home or on the go, at a concert or church service, or even in the board room. There are a number of approaches professionals can take to deliver live content, but each workflow ultimately varies depending upon the delivery platform and the type of display that it’s intended for. There is no one-size fits all approach.

Making Metadata Work
Bruce Devlin - new I dare say that if you’re a keen reader of my column then you will be brushing up on your Dutch pronunciation and acclimatising yourself to mayonnaise on your chips rather than ketchup. If you’re really keen then you’ll also be making sure that you practise your Dutch jokes about the Flemish to ensure you don’t accidentally tell a Flemish joke about the Dutch at 2am on Sunday morning in a local bar somewhere near the red light district in Amsterdam.

Why MADI is Still Relevant
Stephen Brownsill While the original idea for MADI was to cater to a very narrow recording studio application, the standard remains a viable go-to multichannel audio technology. Beginning as a standard in 1991, MADI was first introduced to the world as digital production was beginning to come of age. MADI was put together in 1988 by Solid State Logic, AMS-Neve, Sony (DASH) and Mitsubishi (ProDigi) as a way to transport up to 56 channels of digital audio between large-format audio consoles of the day and digital multi-channel tape machines via 75-Ohm coaxial cables. Both tape-based machines have long since disappeared from the equipment landscape.

The last few years have seen tremendous change in all sorts of technologies, and the broadcast industry is just one sector that has seen some significant leaps in innovation.

The Future of Broadcast Connectivity
Jamie Adkin The use of KVM equipment has been essential to meet the evolving needs of the broadcast industry for many years. Over that time, many in the industry have recognised the importance of using IP-enabled KVM to break down technological barriers and enable real-time access to visuals wherever and whenever they’re needed. These components are vital parts in live production environments in particular.
